Book excerpt: In the year 2008 the new "International Journal of Child and Adolescent Health" was begun under the auspicies of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development in Israel in collaboration with Nova Science Publishers in New York in order to facilitate an outlet for peer-reviewed papers in the areas of both child and adolescent health and human development. They hoped that there would be an international interest in such a new journal, and they hoped to receive good-quality reviews and original papers in these areas. This in fact happened, and in this yearbook they have gathered papers from the year 2008. In this book, leading international experts discuss recent advances in child and adolescent health with research findings published in the year 2008.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The early years in the life of a child are critical for cognitive, social and emotional development. It is therefore important that we make sure that children grow up in an environment, where their social, emotional and educational needs are met. Children who grow up in an environment where their developmental needs are not met are at risk for compromised health, well-being and sometimes also developmental delays. Failure in the first years of life or lack of invested time or resources (both family and society) may have long term effects on not only development, but also the health, welfare and education systems. Society must therefore work to ensure that children develop in safe, loving, and secure environments. They are our future and our success or failure. This yearbook compiles the work done in 2008 with a broad research agenda on a global basis, addressing questions ranging from policy to practice, and spanning the developmental spectrum from human genetics, infancy and early childhood, to adolescence and adulthood.

Book excerpt: It is now apparent that chronic diseases starts in early childhood and professionals should therefore emphasize the importance of a lifestyle of regular physical activity from childhood and during adolescence, which continues into and throughout adulthood, for the health and well-being of both individuals and populations. Programs that correspond with an active life style should be assembled in accordance with clinical and research findings, be community based and easily accessed by all and throughout the year, with specific consideration for individual needs such as function, disability, sex, and age of the participants. We have discussed this issue in this book, but you will also find chapters focused on school and adolescent health, juvenile fire-setting, chronic illness, internet, teenage pregnancy and substance abuse.

Book excerpt: Before birth through young adulthood there is a wide range of health issues that affect our children, such as general childhood illnesses, eating and obesity, accidents and injuries, and particular stages of life, such as teenage independence. Child health and pediatrics focus on the well-being of children from conception through adolescence, but human development is a life span issue, so research in childhood does not stop with the end of adolescence, but we need a long-term and life long study to observe and understand the development process. It is not enough to survive, we also need to strive for well-being and transform our globe to a better place to live in and grow and transform our children. In this Yearbook you will find information about health, education, leadership and other relevant issues important for childhood and adolescence.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children represent our future and healthy growth and development ought to be the prime concern of any society. President Calvin Coolidge (1872-1933), elected as the 29th Vice President in 1920 and succeeded to the Presidency upon the sudden death of Warren G. Harding in 1923. Elected in his own right in 1924 he became the 30th President of the United States until 1929. He was in favour of the civil rights of African Americans, Catholics and in 1924 Coolidge signed the Indian Citizenship Act, which granted full citizenship to all American Indians. Coolidge's chronically ill mother died, perhaps from tuberculosis, when he was twelve years old and his sister died at the age of fifteen, when Coolidge was eighteen, which are maybe some of the reasons behind his proclamation for a national Child Health Day in 1928 (in 2014 it is child health day on 6 October, first Monday of October). Today about one in six children between the age 2-19 years is overweight with risk for serious health consequences like asthma, diabetes and heart disease and child health day is therefore also relevant today. In this Yearbook you will find interesting chapters on a broad spectrum relevant for health and human development in our time.

This book was released on 2014 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a relatively new diagnostic label which reflects the variability and differentiation of symptomatology among children and youth commonly described as having autistic disorder, high-functioning autism (HFA), and Asperger's syndrome. Current best practices have emerged from decades of evidence-based research, research-to-practice translation of empirically supported procedures, and consensus-driven recommendations from multiple disciplines. As a result, practitioners have many educational and intervention choices for children and youth with ASD--what is critical is that these options are informed by empirical outcomes that have been replicated in experimental trials (group and single-case) and disseminated to professionals and researchers alike. Children and Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a state-of-the-art volume of 15 chapters across four thematic sections that reflect the current convention of viewing autism along a continuum of presenting symptoms. Skillfully edited by James K. Luiselli, sections cover diagnosis, assessment, and measurement; evidence-based practices; health and development; and additional topics such as mindful caregiving and support, CBT, and behavioral family intervention. Compiling the most up-to-date advances in approaches toward diagnosis, education, treatment, and program development, Children and Youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) will be a valuable resource for professionals and trainees in the ASD field including psychologists, educators, therapists, behavior analysts, and similar practitioners. It is also appropriate for academic researchers and courses devoted to clinical psychology, special education, developmental disabilities, and special topics.
