Book Synopsis Social Environmental Conflicts in Mexico by : Darcy Tetreault
Download or read book Social Environmental Conflicts in Mexico written by Darcy Tetreault and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-10 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the political economic conditions that have given rise to increasing numbers of social environmental conflicts in Mexico? Why do these conflicts arise in some local and regional contexts and not in others? How are social environmental movements constructed and sustained? And what are the alternatives? These are the questions that this book seeks to address. It is organized into three parts. The first provides a panoramic view of social environmental conflicts in Mexico and of alternatives that are being constructed from below in rural areas. It also provides an analysis of the recent reforms to open the country’s energy sector to private and foreign investment. The second is comprised of local-level case studies of conflict (and no conflict) in diverse geographic locations and cultural settings, particularly in relation to the construction of wind farms, hydraulic infrastructure, industrial water pollution, and groundwater overdraft. The third explores alternatives from below in the form of community-based ecotourism and traditional mezcal production. A concluding chapter engages comparative and global analysis.

Book Synopsis Climate Change and Human Responses by : Gregory Monks
Download or read book Climate Change and Human Responses written by Gregory Monks and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-21 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to the current discussion on climate change by presenting selected studies on the ways in which past human groups responded to climatic and environmental change. In particular, the chapters show how these responses are seen in the animal remains that people left behind in their occupation sites. Many of these bones represent food remains, so the environments in which these animals lived can be identified and human use of those environments can be understood. In the case of climatic change resulting in environmental change, these animal remains can indicate that a change has occurred, in climate, environment and human adaptation, and can also indicate the specific details of those changes.

Book Synopsis International Perspectives on Water Quality Management and Pollutant Control by : Nigel W.T. Quinn
Download or read book International Perspectives on Water Quality Management and Pollutant Control written by Nigel W.T. Quinn and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2013-02-27 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The level of surface water quality protection is variable around the world in large part due to the relative effectiveness of environmental regulation and the degree to which science influences the regulatory process. In the United States, at the federal level, the Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) has been an effective policy and water quality management tool for dealing with both point source and non-point source pollution. The TMDL provides a rational framework for estimating the assimilative capacity of the receiving water body for certain contaminants and applying factors of safety and incorporating acceptable levels of water quality criteria violation - provided the local stakeholders have a say in the decision making process. This collection of articles from around the world are good examples of the application of sound scientific principles to solve pressing water quality problems.
