Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller? Oh, you know the dogs weren't going to let the cats get away with that! This canine companion to I Could Pee on This, the beloved volume of poems by cats, I Could Chew on This will have dog lovers laughing out loud. Doggie laureates not only chew on quite a lot of things, they also reveal their creativity, their hidden motives, and their eternal (and sometimes misguided) effervescence through such musings as "I Dropped a Ball," "I Lose My Mind When You Leave the House," and "Can You Smell That?" Accompanied throughout by portraits of the canine poets in all their magnificence, I Could Chew on This is a work of unbridled enthusiasm, insatiable appetite, and, yes, creative genius. Plus, this is a fixed-format version of the book, which looks nearly identical to the print version.

Book excerpt: CHEW ON THIS BUT DON'T SWALLOW A must-read before your next dental visit! Exposing the truth about common dental procedures: It's not what you have been told... Did you know that whole-body health, begins in your mouth? Many common dental procedures such as dental mercury amalgams, metal crowns, root canals, implants, and even braces, have been found to be a causative factor in many diseases that people around the globe are facing today, including cancer. CHEW ON THIS - BUT DON'T SWALLOW, was written not only for the layperson but also for any health care professional, who is interested in getting to the "root cause" of a disease, rather than just treating symptoms. After Dr. Blanche D. Grube, had been trained by and worked with, Dr. Hal Huggins (Renowned Author, of It's All In Your Head) for decades, they developed the Huggins-Grube Protocol, which includes doing a "Full Dental Revision". A Full Dental Revision is done by removing all toxic materials and replacing them, with biocompatible materials to restore the mouth, as holistically as possible. This is explained in great detail, and why the removal of mercury dental amalgam, is just the beginning. Dr. Blanche has taken all of her 40 plus years of research, continuing education, and clinical practice to share what she has learned, and observed about these conventional dental procedures, including "the safe, the harmful, and the outright dangerous"! From her personal experiences to actual case studies, to peer-reviewed scientific research, CHEW ON THIS - BUT DON'T SWALLOW, truly is, a must-read before your next dental visit.

Book excerpt: Allow me to blast a ray of sunshine through the murky clouds hovering over advertising agencies and marketing departments alike. If you've got talent, I can keep you from rolling an embarrassing string of gutter balls. Chew With Your Mind Open is here to make it make sense to the degree that advertising ever will. The politics. The personalities. The nonstop problems in need of smart and effective solutions. I was lucky. I had a great thinker in my corner for over two decades. A rock-solid, real-live 24/7 mentor. My father, Guy Day, knew the advertising racket well and was no stranger to remarkable creative work. He co-founded Chiat/Day as a writer and was the agency's president, twice. My dad helped inspire some of the best advertising of the 20th century, Apple's "1984" Super Bowl spot for example. He also inspired me. What my father gave me, is what I'm now ready to give you. Just enough big-picture guidance to be dangerous. My advice can keep you from falling into unproductive time-sucks and sinking in conceptual quicksand. I'll help you avoid the chronic wallowing, unneeded politicking, and blame game that's all too common in the business. I'll help you develop good habits that will serve you well in the worst of times. Throughout my book, I'll share how I got -- and still get -- my best thinking through the gauntlet without collecting a huge assortment of knives in my back. Granted, a few of them will be unavoidable. I'll address that part, too. My knowledge comes from real-life experiences, and my book is broken down by subject and is served one easily digestible nugget at a time. Sometimes my experiences are funny, other times embarrassing, but they always reveal an underlying truth and a learning opportunity that could spare you some scar tissue. Along the way, readers will be in the room with me as I present work, defend it, debate clients, and push the best thinking forward.

Book excerpt: Third-generation Seattleite, historian, journalist, and museum visionary Ron Chew spent more than five decades fighting for Asian American and social justice causes in Seattle. In this deeply personal memoir, he documents the tight-knit community he remembers, describing small family shops, chop suey restaurants, and sewing factories now vanished. He untangles the mystery of his extended family's journey to America during the era of the Chinese Exclusion Act. Intimate profiles of his parents--a waiter and garment worker--and leaders like Bob Santos, Ruth Woo, Al Sugiyama, Roberto Maestas, and Kip Tokuda are set against the familiar backdrop of local landmarks such as Sick's Stadium, Kokusai Theatre, Shorey's Bookstore, Higo Variety Store, Hong Kong Restaurant, and Chubby &Tubby. He highlights Seattle's unsung champions in the fight for racial inclusion, political empowerment, American ethnic studies, Asian American arts, Japanese American redress, and revitalization of the Chinatown-International District. Chew himself led a successful campaign to transform a historic hotel into the Wing Luke Museum's permanent home.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Americans began chewing gum long before 1850, scraping resin from spruce trees, removing any bits of bark or insects and chewing the finished product. Commercially-made gum was of limited availability and came in three types--tree resin, pretroleum-based paraffin and chicle-based--the latter, a natural latex, ultimately eclipsing its rivals by 1920. Once considered a women-only bad habit, chewing gum grew in popularity and was soon indulged in by all segments of society. The gum industry tried vigorously to export the habit, but it proved uniquely American and would not stick abroad. This book examines the chewing gum industry in the United States from 1850 to 1920, the rise and spread of gum chewing and the reactions--nearly all negative--to the habit from editorial writers, reformers, religious figures, employers and the courts. The age-old problem of what to do with chewed gum--some saved it in lockets around their neck; some shared it with friends--is also covered.
