Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most chess biographies present the games of famous players--but not their writings. Filling that gap, this book begins with Syrian master and author of chess studies Philip Stamma, and finishes with the first world champion William Steinitz. The main novelties in opening, middlegame and endgame theory in the 160 year period are examined and biographical sketches put the contributions of more than 30 masters into context. The author presents many new insights--for example, regarding the origins of the Ponziani Opening, the Dutch Defense and the Petroff Defense. French star La Bourdonnais used other sources for almost every part of his Nouveau Traite. Morphy's analysis of the Philidor Defense was faulty and Anderssen's play included many positional ideas. Harrwitz and Neumann published modern treatises long before Steinitz came out with his Modern Chess Instructor. Many ending themes belong to less well-known authors, such as Cozio, Chapais, van Zuylen van Nyevelt, Sarratt, Kling and Horwitz, Berger and Salvio.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Users are easily distracted by other temptations on their devices, multitasking is rampant, and screens coax us to skim rather than read in-depth. What is more, if the way we read is changing, so is the way we write. In response to changing reading habits, many authors and publishers are producing shorter works and ones that don't require reflection or close reading. In her tour through the new world of eReading, Baron weights the value of reading physical print versus online text, including the question of what long-standing benefits of reading might be lost if we go overwhelmingly digital. She also probes how the internet is shifting reading from being a solitary experience to a social one, and the reasons why eReading has taken off in some countries, especially the United States and United Kingdom, but not others, like France and Japan.

He ends up in the grass arena: the parks and streets of the inner city, where beggars, thieves, prostitutes and killers fight for survival and each day brings the question of where to find the next drink. In his searing autobiography Healy describes with unflinching honesty his experiences of addiction, his escape through learning to play chess in prison, and his ongoing search for peace of mind.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sport: Law and Practice, Fourth Edition is the leading legal title covering sports law and practice in the UK, and at the Court of Arbitration for Sport. It serves both as a comprehensive statement of applicable law and precedent, and as a very practical guide to circumnavigating a complex sector. The new edition retains and updates all of the key chapters from previous editions, including the extended sections on challenges to the actions of sports governing bodies, and on anti-doping regulation and enforcement (with an introduction to the new 2021 World Anti-Doping Code). There are important updates to the chapters on Regulating Financial Fair Play, Misconduct, Safeguarding in Sport, the Court of Arbitration for Sport, and Media Rights and Sport. The Fourth Edition also adds brand new chapters dealing with: -Effective sports regulation (including the first ever comprehensive discussions of the 'general principles of law' applied by CAS panels in determining challenges to sports regulations, as well as of the principles of interpretation of sports regulations). -Best practice in sports governance (describing developments such as the strengthening of the competence and independence of boards and the emergence of independent integrity units). -Data protection law and sport (including discussion of the provisions of the Data Protection Act 2018 that facilitate the sharing of personal data by sports bodies for integrity-related purposes). -Exploiting commercially valuable sports data (explaining how sports rights-holders can fashion commercial agreements to meet the demand for sports data from the betting industry and others). -ESports (the first comprehensive treatment of the legal and practical principles underlying the regulation and commercial exploitation of the increasingly important ESports sector). Readers will also benefit from practice tips, precedent clauses, detailed explanations of key practical issues, and step-by-step analysis. This is an essential title for all sports law practitioners (solicitors and barristers, common law and civil lawyers), sports governing bodies, event organisers, clubs, participants, sports agencies and commercial partners, arbitrators, universities, and students.

Book excerpt: Bent Larsen (1935-2010) was one of the greatest fighters chess has ever seen. In his rich career the great Dane defeated all World Champions from Botvinnik to Karpov. He was a Candidate for the World Championship four times and became one of the most successful tournament players of his time. His uncompromising style and his unorthodox thinking made him popular with chess players all around the globe. In 1967/1968 Larsen won five international elite events in a row, a truly spectacular achievement. His successes were such that Bobby Fischer let him play first board in the legendary match Soviet Union vs. the World in 1970 in Belgrade. Bent Larsen also was a highly original chess writer and an extremely productive chess journalist. Not surprisingly the first chess book that Magnus Carlsen ever studied was written by the strongest Scandinavian player before him. This collection brings together more than 120 of Bent Larsen’s best games, annotated by himself. His comments are lucid, to the point, instructive and humorous. Together, these games are a tribute to his genius and a continuous joy to read and play through.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discover Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, in this thematic encyclopedia that covers everything from geography and economics to etiquette and pop culture. Part of Bloomsbury's Understanding Modern Nations series, this volume takes readers on a tour of contemporary Nigeria, helping them better understand the country and the many cultures, religions, and ethnicities that call it home. Chapters are organized thematically, examining a variety of topics, including geography, history, government, economics, religion, ethnic and social groups, gender, education, language, etiquette, food, literature and the arts, and pop culture. Each chapter begins with an overview essay, followed by a selection of encyclopedic entries that provide a more nuanced look at that facet of modern Nigeria. The main text is supplemented with sidebars that highlight additional high-interest topics. A collection of appendices rounds out the volume, offering short vignettes of daily life in the country, a glossary of key terms, statistical data, and a list of state holidays. Once a pawn of British colonialism, today Nigeria is a sovereign nation and key player on the world stage. Its vast oil resources have made it an international powerhouse and the wealthiest country on the African continent, yet political unrest and corruption, and ethnic and religious violence continue to threaten this prosperity. Nigeria is equally rich culturally, a nation where time-honored traditions mix with contemporary influences. Explore the diversity of modern Nigeria in this concise and accessible volume.
