Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Documents, 1823, Vol. 4 It is deemed, after this preliminary explanation, the less necessary to enlarge upon the probable effects of this final termination of the canal, except so far as regards the immediate objects of this memorial. If traced on the map of Georgetown, it will be seen, that the late decision of the company brings the level of the Potomac, at the head of the Little Falls, which it had been' proposed, for the accommodation of the State of - Mary land, to conduct to a basin at, or just above, Georgetown, to a point near the centre of that town, several hundred feet lower down the river than that which is referred to in the late act of Congress; and, consequently, so much nearer to the eastern branch of the Potomac. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Documents, 1826 Little Wills Creek and Buffalo Run were gauged* at the points A and B, the extremes of the shorter proposed summit level, and were found to discharge, the former six, and the latter nine cubic feet per second, equal together fifteen cubic feet. This supply, it is presumed, would be adequate to the demand of the summit, if it could be relied on as constant; but it is known that a calculation of this kind would be greatly erroneous. These streams were represented by some per sons (who, residing in their vicinity, must necessarily have noticed their changes, ) as discharging, at the period of the examination, about double the quantity they give in the dryest season this would give, supposing their estimate correct, but 7% cubic feet as their collective minimum expense, and even this, it is believed, would, after a fair in vestigation, be found to exceed the truth. Nixon signed into law the bill creating the Chesapeake Ohio Canal National Historical Park. In the mid-19705, National Park Service historian Harlan D. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Early Development of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal Project Ground was broken for the work by John Quincy Adams, then President of the United States, on the Fourth of July, 1828, the same day on which ground was broken for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, by the venerable Charles Carroll, Of Carrollton. Thus auspiciously begun under the patronage Of the United States, the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal soon came into the care of the state of Maryland, and was not completed to Cumberland until October, 1850, more than twenty-two years after the work was commenced. Such, in a word, is the origin of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American Military History provides the United States Army-in particular, its young officers, NCOs, and cadets-with a comprehensive but brief account of its past. The Center of Military History first published this work in 1956 as a textbook for senior ROTC courses. Since then it has gone through a number of updates and revisions, but the primary intent has remained the same. Support for military history education has always been a principal mission of the Center, and this new edition of an invaluable history furthers that purpose. The history of an active organization tends to expand rapidly as the organization grows larger and more complex. The period since the Vietnam War, at which point the most recent edition ended, has been a significant one for the Army, a busy period of expanding roles and missions and of fundamental organizational changes. In particular, the explosion of missions and deployments since 11 September 2001 has necessitated the creation of additional, open-ended chapters in the story of the U.S. Army in action. This first volume covers the Army's history from its birth in 1775 to the eve of World War I. By 1917, the United States was already a world power. The Army had sent large expeditionary forces beyond the American hemisphere, and at the beginning of the new century Secretary of War Elihu Root had proposed changes and reforms that within a generation would shape the Army of the future. But world war-global war-was still to come. The second volume of this new edition will take up that story and extend it into the twenty-first century and the early years of the war on terrorism and includes an analysis of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq up to January 2009.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past three decades, many history professors have allowed their biases to distort the way America’s past is taught. These intellectuals have searched for instances of racism, sexism, and bigotry in our history while downplaying the greatness of America’s patriots and the achievements of “dead white men.” As a result, more emphasis is placed on Harriet Tubman than on George Washington; more about the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II than about D-Day or Iwo Jima; more on the dangers we faced from Joseph McCarthy than those we faced from Josef Stalin. A Patriot’s History of the United States corrects those doctrinaire biases. In this groundbreaking book, America’s discovery, founding, and development are reexamined with an appreciation for the elements of public virtue, personal liberty, and private property that make this nation uniquely successful. This book offers a long-overdue acknowledgment of America’s true and proud history.
