Book excerpt: Discrimination still casts a sad shadow in a world where diversity should be cherished.” Embracing Equality: Stories of Love, Acceptance, and Empowerment” is a powerful collection of stories that show how LGBTQIA+ people of different races, genders, religions, and backgrounds have been mistreated. This book, "CHERYY-PICKING," covers the struggles and achievements of those who have navigated a world that frequently refuses to accept them for who they are through a compilation of intriguing anecdotes and informative chapters. Each page is a reminder that acceptance is a journey we must all embark on together, from the difficulties of discrimination to the resilience that inspires transformation. Discover the unshakable spirit of people who overcome the odds, stand strong in the face of hardship, and refuse to let bigotry dull their light. As we delve into the lives of those breaking down boundaries and altering society, we will discover the transformational power of love, empathy, and understanding. Throughout history, religious scriptures have often been misused to justify discrimination against vulnerable groups, including LGBTQIA+ individuals. These misinterpretations and selective readings have perpetuated negative stereotypes and stigmatized those whose identities and experiences differ from traditional norms. This book, "CHERY-PICKING" is our proclamation of independence, our right to self-determination, and a testament to the value we bring to the world as unique individuals. Those who discourage love and foster unforgiving attitudes hinder the path to acceptance and understanding, negatively impacting our lives and society. Through “CHERRY-PICKING,” we aim to challenge these misconceptions and promote a message of love, acceptance, and unity. Love knows no borders and has endless potential to heal and unite people. This is our contribution to a more compassionate and inclusive world.

Book excerpt: A memorable coming-of-age story and love story, laced with suspense, which explores a hidden side of the home front during World War II, when German POWs were put to work in a Wisconsin farm community . . . with dark and unexpected consequences. The war has taken a toll on the Christiansen family. With food rationed and money scarce, Charlotte struggles to keep her family well fed. Her teenage daughter, Kate, raises rabbits to earn money for college and dreams of becoming a writer. Her husband, Thomas, struggles to keep the farm going while their son, and most of the other local men, are fighting in Europe. When their upcoming cherry harvest is threatened, strong-willed Charlotte helps persuade local authorities to allow German war prisoners from a nearby camp to pick the fruit. But when Thomas befriends one of the prisoners, a teacher named Karl, and invites him to tutor Kate, the implications of Charlotte’s decision become apparent—especially when she finds herself unexpectedly drawn to Karl. So busy are they with the prisoners that Charlotte and Thomas fail to see that Kate is becoming a young woman, with dreams and temptations of her own—including a secret romance with the son of a wealthy, war-profiteering senator. And when their beloved Ben returns home, bitter and injured, bearing an intense hatred of Germans, Charlotte’s secrets threaten to explode their world.

His family initially assumed that he would follow his father and brother into the nearby pit, but it was clear from an early age that he had a special relationship with football, and this quickly became his main obsession in life. Aged 15, Steve was already goalkeeping in the local colliery team playing with and against full grown miners when he was spotted by a scout from Derby County, then in the top table of English football. He signed as a schoolboy before turning professional, and was capped for England several times in his youth before eventually winning Derby County’s ‘Player of the Year’ in 1983. He then played for Walsall, again winning ‘Player of the Year’, before heading south for Plymouth Argyle where he distinguished himself by winning ‘Player of the Year.’ After a short time at Chesterfield he joined the boyhood club of his dreams, Notts County just after Neil Warnock arrived. County progressed from the bottom of Division Three up to the top of English football via two Wembley play-off wins, and yet again Steve won ‘Player of the Year’. He left Notts in 1995 for a return to Plymouth Argyle via Watford, then Rotherham United, Rushden & Diamonds, and several other clubs. In his later years Steve used his love of the game to coach young boys in many different teams until only recently hanging up his boots. Steve worked with some of the best football managers in the business and played against some of the English football greats. He played for a dozen clubs in 743 League games and is still fondly remembered and welcomed back at all of them.

Book excerpt: Tom Harlan brings his Oath of Empire series to a shattering conclusion in The Dark Lord. In what would be the 7th Century AD in our history, the Roman Empire still stands, supported by the twin pillars of the Legions and Thaumaturges of Rome. The Emperor of the West, the Augustus Galen Atreus, came to the aid of the Emperor of the East, the Avtokrator Heraclius, in his war with the Sassanad Emperor of Persia. But despite early victories, that war has not gone well, and now Rome is hard-pressed. Constantinople has fallen before the dark sorceries of the Lord Dahak and his legions of the living and dead. Now the new Emperor of Persia marches on Egypt, and if he takes that ancient nation, Rome will be starved and defeated. But there is a faint glimmer of hope. The Emperor Galen's brother Maxian is a great sorcerer, perhaps the equal of Dahak, lord of the seven serpents. He is now firmly allied with his Imperial brother and Rome. And though they are caught tight in the Dark Lord's net of sorcery, Queen Zoe of Palmyra and Lord Mohammed have not relinquished their souls to evil. Powerful, complex, engrossing --Thomas Harlan's Oath of Empire series has taken fantasy readers by storm. The first three volumes, The Shadow of Ararat, The Gate of Fire, and The Storm of Heaven have been universally praised. Book excerpt: Ripe, sensuous, irresistible: the cherry tree and its stunning blossoms conjure up many literal, metaphorical, and visceral sensations. We enjoy cherry picking, a cherry on top, and even, on occasion, losing one’s cherry. Cherries have been consumed since prehistoric times, reaching great popularity among the ancient Romans. They have come to symbolize such divergent concepts as fertility, innocence, and seductiveness, inspiring Dutch still-life paintings, Freudian theory, contemporary pop artists, and one of the first food emojis. In Japan and other Asian cultures, the short-lived but beautiful cherry blossoms are important elements throughout art and literature. In this intriguing natural and cultural history, Constance L. Kirker and Mary Newman recount the origins, legends, celebrations, production, and health benefits of this beloved tree.

Book excerpt: From the physician behind the wildly popular NutritionFacts website, How Not to Die reveals the groundbreaking scientific evidence behind the only diet that can prevent and reverse many of the causes of disease-related death. The vast majority of premature deaths can be prevented through simple changes in diet and lifestyle. In How Not to Die, Dr. Michael Greger, the internationally-renowned nutrition expert, physician, and founder of NutritionFacts.org, examines the fifteen top causes of premature death in America-heart disease, various cancers, diabetes, Parkinson's, high blood pressure, and more-and explains how nutritional and lifestyle interventions can sometimes trump prescription pills and other pharmaceutical and surgical approaches, freeing us to live healthier lives. The simple truth is that most doctors are good at treating acute illnesses but bad at preventing chronic disease. The fifteen leading causes of death claim the lives of 1.6 million Americans annually. This doesn't have to be the case. By following Dr. Greger's advice, all of it backed up by strong scientific evidence, you will learn which foods to eat and which lifestyle changes to make to live longer. History of prostate cancer in your family? Put down that glass of milk and add flaxseed to your diet whenever you can. Have high blood pressure? Hibiscus tea can work better than a leading hypertensive drug-and without the side effects. Fighting off liver disease? Drinking coffee can reduce liver inflammation. Battling breast cancer? Consuming soy is associated with prolonged survival. Worried about heart disease (the number 1 killer in the United States)? Switch to a whole-food, plant-based diet, which has been repeatedly shown not just to prevent the disease but often stop it in its tracks. In addition to showing what to eat to help treat the top fifteen causes of death, How Not to Die includes Dr. Greger's Daily Dozen -a checklist of the twelve foods we should consume every day.Full of practical, actionable advice and surprising, cutting edge nutritional science, these doctor's orders are just what we need to live longer, healthier lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civil War soldiers enjoyed unprecedented access to obscene materials of all sorts, including mass-produced erotic fiction, cartes de visite, playing cards, and stereographs. A perfect storm of antebellum legal, technological, and commercial developments, coupled with the concentration of men fed into armies, created a demand for, and a deluge of, pornography in the military camps. Illicit materials entered in haversacks, through the mail, or from sutlers; soldiers found pornography discarded on the ground, and civilians discovered it in abandoned camps. Though few examples survived the war, these materials raised sharp concerns among reformers and lawmakers, who launched campaigns to combat it. By the war's end, a victorious, resurgent American nation-state sought to assert its moral authority by redefining human relations of the most intimate sort, including the regulation of sex and reproduction—most evident in the Comstock laws, a federal law and a series of state measures outlawing pornography, contraception, and abortion. With this book, Judith Giesberg has written the first serious study of the erotica and pornography that nineteenth-century American soldiers read and shared and links them to the postwar reaction to pornography and to debates about the future of sex and marriage.
