Considering Chen's paintings and prints alongside Chen's romance drama commentaries and prefaces and his collected writings (particularly poetry), Bentley sheds new light not only on Chen, but also on an important cultural moment in the first half of the seventeenth century. Through analysis of Chen's figure paintings and print designs, Bentley examines the artist's engagement with the values of "authenticity" and "emotion," which were part of a larger discourse stressing idiosyncrasy, the individual voice, and vernacular literature. She contrasts these values with the commercial aspects of his production, geared at an expanding art market of well-to-do buyers, excavating the apparent contradiction inherent in the two pursuits. In the end, she suggests, the emphasis on the "authentic" voice was marketed to a broad field of anonymous buyers. Though her primary focus is on Chen Hongshou, Bentley's investigation ultimately concerns not only this individual artist, but also the effect of early modern changes on an artist's mode of working and his self-image, in the West as well as the East. The study touches upon expanding international trade and the rise of middle class art markets (including print markets), not only in China but also in the Dutch Republic in circa 1630-1650. But it is not a mere list of various theories, paintings, and painters in chronological order. Much space of the book is devoted to describing the political, cultural, and economic situations as well as the philosophical, literary, and academic elements that have influenced Chinese painting. In its presentation of painters, painting theories, schools, and genres, the book combines general introduction with case studies, and in so doing maintains an objective and unbiased stance. To controversial topics such as the role of Buddhism and Taoism and the division of Northern School and Southern School in landscape painting, the book analyzes political and cultural causes, but gives no definite answer, thus allowing interpretation by the readers. As the title suggests, the book is not an exclusive discussion on painting theories; otherwise, a more appropriate title would be “Chinese Painting Theories,” or “A History of Chinese Painting.” By “intellectual,” the author meant to include not only systematic painting theories and fragmented commentaries that are written in words, but also the implicit and intangible message or thoughts underlying the creation of Chinese painting. Therefore, reading this book is not only a way of appreciating Chinese painting, but also helps in understanding Chinese culture.

At the end of the Yuan Dynasty, a series of crises broke out after years of accumulated unrest, and uprisings against the regime erupted everywhere. The Yuan Dynasty was on the edge of collapse. Many separate regimes emerged all over the country. Eventually the Han and Dazhou regimes were overthrown by an insurrectionary army led by Zhu Yuanzhang, who proclaimed himself Emperor Nanjing in1368 and he gave his new dynasty the name 'Ming'. Over the following close on 300 years, the new dynasty would witness reunification and reconstruction in the early years, followed by economic and cultural prosperity in the Jiajing and Wanli eras, and political corruptions, internal disorder and foreign invasions in the latter period. The Ming Dynasty would represent a zenith of feudal society in Chinese history. The Ming Dynasty gained access to rich jade resources and jade ware became more diversified. The emphasis was on exquisite items of daily use, ornaments, and ornamental furnishings. The period also saw the development of porcelain making., building on the foundation of the Song and Yuan Dynasties. The Jingdezhen Kiln, built in the Five Dynasties, became the domestic centre of porcelain making. Over-glazed colour techniques experienced rapid development, with under-glaze blue and white porcelain became prominent. Calligraphy continued in the style of the Somng and Yuan Dynasties, but many new genres developed: 'Three Songs', 'Two Shens', 'Three Calligraphers of the Wu School', and the 'Four Masters'. Paintings in this period continued to develop with three different stages: 'imperial court decorative painting', and the 'Zhe school' and the 'Four Pillars of the Wu School; and 'Xieyi'. This book, the seventh in a ten-volume collection, brings to the English-speaking world a series of books from China which has been complied by an Expert Committee of the Chinese Society of Cultural Relics.
