Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: J. W. Einax, H. W. Zwanziger S. Gei Chemometrics in Environmental Analysis Make the most of your data! This new title will serve both as an introduction and as a practical guide to those techniques of chemometrics which are applicable to environmental analysis. By describing the optimum methods of data analysis it will help all chemists in this field to save time and money. Because the authors demonstrate the most important chemometric methods with the aid of numerous examples, the reader will learn to solve a given problem by use of the appropriate method. Applications range from sampling, through laboratory analysis, to evaluation. Interpretation of the findings is explained clearly. The text covers not only basic methods such as univariate statistics, regression analysis, and statistical test planning, but also multivariate data analysis, for example, cluster analysis, principal components analysis, and factor and discriminant analysis. Case studies show the enormous possibilities, and the limits, of chemometric methods. The book will help all environmental analytical scientists, even those with only a basic knowledge of mathematics, to optimize the evaluation and interpretation of the results of their measurements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when computerized laboratory automation is producing a da ta explosion, chemists are turning to applied mathematics and statistics for the tools to extract useful chemical information from data. This rush to find applicable methods has lead to a somewhat confusing body of literature that represents a barrier to chemists wishing to learn more about chemometrics. The confusion results partly from the mixing of chemical notation and nomenclature with those of statistics, applied mathematics and engineering. Additionally, in the absence of collaboration with mathematicians, chemists have, at times, misused data analysis methodology and even reinvented methods that have seen years of service in other fields. The Chemometrics Society has worked hard to solve this problem since it was founded in 1974 with the goal of improving communications between the chemical sciences and applied mathe matics and statistics. The NATO Advanced Study Institute on Chemometrics is evidence of this fact as it was initiated in response to a call from its membership for advanced training in several areas of chemometrics. This Institute focused on current theory and application in the new field of Chemometrics: Use of mathematical and statistical methods, Ca) to design or select optimal measurement procedures and experiments; and Cb) to provide maximum chemical information by analyzing chemical data. The Institute had two formal themes and two informal themes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemometrics is the chemical discipline that uses mathematical, statistical and other methods employing formal logic: to design or select optimal measurement procedures and experiments, and -- to provide maximum relevant chemical information by analysing chemical data. Being conceived as a branch of analytical chemistry, chemometrics now is a general approach. It extracts relevant information out of measured data, regardless of their origin: chemical, physical, biological, etc. Chemometrics has been applied in different areas, and most successfully in multivariate calibration, pattern recognition, classification and discriminant analysis, multivariate modelling, and monitoring of processes. The main chemometric principle is a concept of hidden data structures that can be found using methods of multivariate data analysis. These are the well-known statistic tools such as partial least squares (PLS), soft independent modelling of class analogy (SIMCA), principal-component regression (PCR), wavelet analysis, and many others. Current activities of chemometricians fall into two main categories: (1) development of new methods for manipulating multivariate data and (2) new applications of the known chemometric techniques in different areas such as environment control, food industry, agriculture, medicine, and engineering.

Book excerpt: Chemometrics, the branch of science, is the use of mathematical and statistical methods to improve the understanding of chemical information and to correlate quality parameters or physical properties to analytical instrument data. It can be applied in predictive issues solving like predicting the target properties, desired features. It also can be used for the descriptive issue solving like the model composition, identification and understanding. Chemometrics shows its application in the multivariate data collection and analysis. Various algorithms and analogous ways are available for processing and evaluating the data. They can be implemented to various fields, like medicine, pharmacy, food control, and environmental monitoring. Chemometric techniques are particularly heavily used in analytical chemistry and metabolomics, and the development of improved chemometric methods of analysis also continues to advance the state of the art in analytical instrumentation and methodology. It is an application-driven discipline, and thus the standard chemometric methodologies are very widely used industrially, academic groups are dedicated to the continued development of chemometric theory, method and application development. Many chemical problems and applications of chemometrics involve calibration. The objective is to develop models which can be used to predict properties of interest based on measured properties of the chemical system, such as pressure, flow, temperature, infrared, Raman, NMR spectra and mass spectra. This book, Chemometrics in practical applications, presents several practical applications of chemometric methods in chemistry, biochemistry and chemical technology.
