Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An original take on the journey into and through healing. In the first section of this very personal book of illness, spirituality, and healing, the Rev. Cricket Cooper receives a diagnosis of non-Hodgkins lymphoma, for which she will need to undergo an eighteen-week/six-cycle chemo treatment plan. She decides to pair each of the chemo treatments, if possible, with a pilgrimage to some holy site or religious community. The journey’s sharp ups and downs lead her to the understanding that there is one path, and we travel it together—sometimes to unexpected places. After counting down the eighteen weeks of the chemo, much to her oncologist’s (and Cooper’s) chagrin, the cancer is not cured, and she must move on to radiation therapy. The next section follows her month of radiation. Cooper’s terror of this treatment is allayed when she is able to see the radiation as “Healing Light,” and realize that December—her radiation month—is also the month of the Jewish Festival of Lights, of the Solstice, of Christian Advent/Nativity/ Epiphany, and other faith-based celebrations of light. Taking as her meditation the Episcopal Collect for Advent 1: “Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armor of light,” she explores what this might mean beyond the context of Advent and in her own individual situation. The book’s final section covers waiting for the “all-clear” report from the doctors and Cooper’s residual issues of moving from the status of being a patient to the status of being “a Survivor.” It is a time of relief tinged with at least a bit of uncertainty, but buoyed by the knowledge that cancer is not just a diagnosis, and not just a journey; today, cancer is a community that welcomes you into its midst.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a remarkable book written by an amazing patient with cancer. His journey has been hard and tortuous and is not yet over. His writing is clear, amusing, factually correct, well researched and inspirational. Its a very unusual logbook of a pilgrim who has travelled for a decade down the cancer road. Bursting with information, this story will be helpful to all those with cancer, whatever its type. We live in an information rich world, where the internet and media provide 24 hour access to global knowledge. But sifting the relevant and accurate from the erroneous and subtly promotional is now a great challenge. Here, Mallory demonstrates how to do this very effectively. During my career as an oncologist I have seen tremendous improvements in cancer care. Our outcomes are now so much better. But involving patients in their care has never been more important. This gives us great insight of one mans cancer journey and will be of great value to future patients and their families. Book excerpt: A cancer diagnosis is a seismic event. It divides life into before and after, and propels the diagnosed into places of suffering, pain and isolation; life is turned upside down in the present while the future horizon clouds with uncertainty and fear. Despite someone getting diagnosed with cancer in the UK every two minutes, cancer is a disease that is often described as lonely as the sufferer sets out on a tough journey through waiting, treatment and recovery. In this wise and compassionate book, cancer survivor Gillian Straine proposes that this journey through illness, pain and anxiety be reconceptualised as a pilgrimage of discovery. The Christian faith is that we are never abandoned by God, and this promise holds wherever we might find ourselves, whether that is in the doctor's waiting room, in a chair receiving chemotherapy or lying on the surgeons table. Following the journey of Jesus through the darkness of Gethsemane, to the cross and into the silent waiting of Holy Saturday, this book invites the reader to seek God in their experience of cancer and, by pointing to the glimmers of resurrection hope in remission and beyond, to find healing in their own story of illness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Unplanned Journey relates the adventures of my walk on the Cancer road. It stresses the lessons that Cancer taught me. It tells the reader about my fears and my struggles in dealing with Cancer - the acceptance of having the disease, the surgeries, and its treatments. This book is written in an effort to assure any woman or man with Cancer that there is an end to the long journey. My readers should be assured that they are not alone. Today most Cancers are curable if they can be found early. Happiness and normal life will return again at the end of the journey. Book Review: Breast Cancer The Unplanned Journey Lessons Learned By Beverly Stacy Dittmer Reviewed by Mary Ann Noonan Breast Cancer The Unplanned Journey Lessons Learned, is the very personal journal of Beverly Stacy Dittmer's passage from finding a lump in her breast, through her anxious wait for the confirmed diagnosis of breast cancer that every woman dreads to hear, through her one step at a time trek from surgery through treatment and complications, and, finally, to a realization that life goes on and can become normal again. Beverly as a daughter, a sister, a wife, a mother, a grandmother, a friend, and a professional woman shares critical, yet sensitive, information about her diagnosis of breast cancer and its treatment. She makes it quite clear in the copyright page that "the medical statements in this book are only what I understood and are not to be taken as true medical facts," continuing that her knowledge about breast cancer was obtained in years 2003 and 2004. In addition, she includes a personal touch to her 222 page manuscript describing many relationships and human interest stories about life with her husband, her family, her friends, her personal activities, and travels. The reader follows Beverly as she relates her cancer journey one step at a time-the good times and the bad. In a detailed, remarkably sensitive, casual, almost speaking to the audience style, Dittmer writes about everyday life while facing a life threatening condition. She shares words of advice and reminders about living each day with confidence and courage that there is light at the end of the tunnel while including "lessons learned" in the last four pages. Encouragement is granted to the reader by the author's constructive council that "there is an end to this long journey." Through her direct and candid accounts it was obvious that she was not alone in this walk. As a professional nurse practitioner and retired professor of nursing, reading Beverly Stacy Dittmer's personal story reinforces the importance for health care providers to listen and to be present to all individuals for whom they care. For the person with a life-threatening illness, this read will provide a source of strength and encouragement. For the student of nursing and medicine it is a must read.

Book excerpt: Cancer diagnosis and treatment can make a person feel both frightened and powerless; Anna Fitch Courie takes a different approach: Join her as she embarks on an epic journey with God after finding out she has cancer. Cancer Girl wraps herself in a cape of grace, freely sharing her experiences of diagnosis, traversing the medical system, finding faith in God again, and learning to live with cancer. Cancer Girl learns that there is no stronger “magic word” than “Trust God.” Part journal, part sage advice, Fitch Courie weaves her experience as a nurse throughout her story. Using her real-time blog posts during the course of diagnosis, treatment, and living with the disease, Fitch Courie covers the cycle of grief and relearning a new norm, offering assurance to others that they are not alone. Each chapter opens with Scripture that reflects the theme of the day. Section 1 covers early stages of the journey; Section 2 offers learnings from the experience; and Section 3 offers questions for the individual to reflect on their own illness and how they felt. Readers are encouraged to explore their thoughts, feelings, and experiences with their illness in order to contribute to overall healing.

Book excerpt: The news felt like a punch in the gut. I cried in disbelief as the doctor told me what they found. In the blink of an eye, my world turned upside down. My husband brought me to the Emergency Room after I experienced a seizure. The hospital staff did scans, tests, and a biopsy, and now the doctor told me I had an inoperable brain tumor. The name of my nemesis was Oligoastrocytoma, Grade 3. My husband and I used the CaringBridge website to keep family and friends informed on how I was doing. A Pilgrimage of Hope, A Story of Faith and Medicine, is my story chronicling the challenges in trying to triumph in the battle for my life. The memoirs capture the frightening details in a crash course with cancer and the possible treatments for this disease. Despite the cancer diagnosis, I found myself being called closer to God. I wanted to share my physical and spiritual journey with others so that when they are challenged, they will have some guidance in how to respond. With recovery in mind, my spiritual growth deepened as I aligned my will with the will of God. A pilgrimage to the Holy Land at the end of my treatments fulfilled my yearning for a greater understanding of Christ. I shared the details of my trip to the Holy Land on my CaringBridge site and in this book.

Book excerpt: Anyone who hears the dreaded word "chemotherapy" naturally experiences feelings of fear and apprehension. For Steve Givens that one word was the beginning of a new chapter in his life, one that would change him in profound ways. He believes that a brotherhood and sisterhood exists between those who have battled a chronic disease or undergone chemotherapy. They know one another's pain, numbness, and exhaustion. They smile at one another when they meet in the ahllways or while blood is drawn because they can relate and because they know. And here he shares his story with "kin," those who, like him, have no choice but acceptance. He still experiences times of pain, sickness, confusion, and sadness on his journey to wellness, but he also feels renewed and reborn spiritually. Here he reveals that he has chosen the way of faith and God because he knows of no other way that brings peace and gives him a reason to go on. He has opted to embrace his disease and its treatment--but not by himself alone. As he says, "My arms are not big enough or strong enough for the battle." He believes, however, that they arms of God are big enough to encircle him and his disease. This is a beautifully told story of struggle and pain, but ultimately of peace and acceptance, a wonderful resource for all who are facing chronic illness and its treatment.

Neetcie had been married to her husband, Otis, for forty-five good years, when, on October 10, 2005, shocking news came to them: Otis has not one, but three, cancers in his body. Fighting a disease like cancer is really tough, and there's no telling how hard it can be if you have three of its kind to deal with. But Neetcie is thankful that all is going well since the time Otis refused chemo treatments and resolved to taking alternative medicine. Everything is doing well with the herbs and supplements, and even the doctors have become believers of how well they are helping Otis's life, which could have been extended originally just for three months. Escaping the Chemo Slaughter, by Neetcie Buell, shares a devoted wife's fight to save the life of her husband from cancer.
