Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the discovery of technetium (in 1937, by Perrier and Segre), technetium-99 and technetium-99m have become most familiar in the specialised literature, the behaviour of the former being of concern regarding its health impact, the latter having been used intensively in medical tests for many years. The knowledge of the characteristics and behaviour of this element in nature is currently increasing exponentially. It has become clear, however, that there is still a serious shortage of information needed to assess properly its burden and impact on man and his environment. Technetium may indeed be released from nuclear installations or as a waste product from medical applications. It is generally considered to be highly mobile as the anion TcOi, but it is also suspected to be readily reduced in soils and metabolised in living beings into lower oxidation states. The seminar was planned to analyse thoroughly the experimental results obtained up to now and to make recommendations of specific issues requiring further research. This book presents the papers of the different sessions in the order of presentation, and the conclusions drawn by three discussion groups which dealt separately with: problems of sources and distribution of man-made technetium and its radiological consequences; the chemical behaviour of technetium in different ecosystems; biochemical reactions and binding with macromolecules in various life systems. vi Preface The editors, together with the Programme Committee of the Seminar, wish to express their gratitude to the chairmen of the different sessions for their summary of the group discussions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technetium-99 is a high yield daughter product from fission reactions. The chemistry of this isotope makes it an environmental contaminant that is difficult to remove. This dissertation describes three aspects regarding the chemistry of technetium and its chemical analog, rhenium. The second chapter discusses a new method of extracting anionic metals from water with supercritical fluid carbon dioxide. Efficient extraction of tetrabutylammonium perrhenate was performed with methanol modified supercritical fluid carbon dioxide. This extraction was performed without complexation of rhenium prior to extraction. The third chapter examines the use of host-guest chemistry to selectively remove pertechnetate from aqueous systems. A metallated cyclotriveratrylene-type host selectively removed pertechnetate from saline at high efficiency in the presence of similar anions. The fourth chapter describes the possible use of technetium, in various chemical complexes, as a tracer for hydrological flows. Technetium-99m pharmaceuticals were added to different soils and water types to determine their sorption characteristics. Pertechnetate was found to have the lowest sorption while the complexed pharmaceuticals showed mixed, but higher, sorption.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technetium (99Tc, half-life = 2.13x105 years, b-emitter) is one of the radionuclides of major concern for nuclear waste disposal. This concern is due to the long half-life of 99Tc, the ease with which pertechnetate, TcO4 -, migrates in the geosphere, and the corresponding regulatory considerations. The problem of mobility of pertechnetate in the environment is compounded by the fact that pertechnetate is the thermodynamically stable form of technetium in oxidizing environments. Because of this stability, pertechnetate was presumed to be the predominant chemical form of technetium in the aqueous phase of nuclear waste tanks. However, recent studies indicate that a significant fraction of the technetium is in a different chemical form. 1,2 These factors present challenges the disposition of technetium.

Book excerpt: Technetium chemistry is a young and developing field. Despite the limited knowledge of its chemistry, technetium is the workhorse for nuclear medicine. Technetium is also a significant environmental concern because it is formed as a byproduct of nuclear weapons production and fission-power generators. Development of new technetium radio-pharmaceuticals and effective environmental control depends strongly upon knowledge of basic technetium chemistry. The authors performed research into the basic coordination and organometallic chemistry of technetium and used this knowledge to address nuclear medicine and environmental applications. This is the final report of a three-year Laboratory-Directed Research and Development (LDRD) project at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL).

Book excerpt: Part I: Sulfide Remediation Technetium-99 is an environmental concern at nuclear waste storage facilities. Hanford, WA is one of the largest waste storage facilities, and unfortunately some of the nuclear waste contained at this site has leaked into the ground. Technetium is most stable as the pertechnetate anion in aqueous, aerobic environments, which is mobile in water. Due to this high mobility and its long half-life, studies have been done to understand the environmental impact of technetium and to prevent further contamination issues. The H2S gaseous diffusion method has shown potential in immobilizing technetium by forming reduced Tc solids in the ground. In past work, it has been shown that olefinic low molecular weight organic acids (LMWOAs) can inhibit immobilization. Therefore, one objective for this project was to identify the complexes formed in these reactions. Additionally, work has been done to investigate the interaction of sulfide and pertechnetate with common Fe-containing minerals. Part II: Schiff Base Chemistry Technetium-99m Schiff base complexes have been studied for use as single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) imaging agents. Rhenium is often considered a structural analog to technetium and has isotopes ideal for radiotherapy and imaging. Many Tc and Re N2O2 Schiff base complexes have been investigated. Reaction with [pi]-backbonding ligands may lead to complexes that are more kinetically inert. In previous work, addition of thiocyanate (NCS- ) to trans-[ReO(X)(acac2en/pn)] (X = OH2 or Cl− ) led to the formation of cis-[ReO(NCS)acac2en/pn]. Efforts to understand and develop suitable Tc/Re radiopharmaceuticals have led to unusually aqueous-stable MVO(NCS) Schiff base complexes.

Book excerpt: Interest in the chemistry of technetium has only increased since its discovery in 1937, mainly because of the large and growing inventory of 99Tc generated during fission of 235U, its environmental mobility in oxidizing conditions, and its potential radiotoxicity. For every ton of enriched uranium fuel (3% 235U) that is consumed at a typical burn-up rate, nearly 1 kg of 99Tc is generated. Thus, the mass of 99Tc produced since 1993 has nearly quadrupled, and will likely to continue to increase if more emphasis is placed on nuclear power to slow the accumulation of atmospheric greenhouse gases. In order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the interaction of 99Tc and the natural environment, we review the sources of 99Tc in the nuclear fuel cycle, its chemical properties, radiochemistry, and biogeochemical behavior. We include an evaluation of the use of Re as a chemical analog of Tc, as well as a summary of the redox potential, thermodynamics, sorption, colloidal behavior, and interaction of humic substances with Tc, and the potential for re-oxidation and remobilization of Tc(IV). What emerges is a more complicated picture of Tc behavior than that of an easily tractable transition of Tc(VII) to Tc(IV) with consequent immobilization. Reducing conditions (+200 to +100 mV Eh) are generally thought necessary to cause reduction of Tc(VII) to Tc(IV), but far more important are the presence of reducing agents, such as Fe(II) sorbed onto mineral grains. Catalysis of Tc(VII) by surface-mediated Fe(II) will bring the mobile Tc(VII) species to a lower oxidation state and will form the relatively insoluble Tc(IV)O2∙nH2O, but even as a solid, equilibrium concentrations of aqueous Tc are nearly a factor of 20× above the EPA set drinking water standards. However, sequestration of Tc(IV) into Fe(III)-bearing phases, such as goethite or other hydrous oxyhydroxides of iron, may ameliorate concerns over the mobility of Tc. Further, the outcome of many studies on terrestrial and marine sediments that are oxidizing overall indicate that Tc is relatively immobile, due to formation of oxygen-depleted microenvironments that develop in response to bacteriological activities. The rate of re-mobilization of Tc from these microenvironments is just beginning to be assessed, but with no firm consensus. Reassessment of the simple models in which Tc is mobilized and immobilized is therefore urged.
