Book excerpt: Work under this contract has proceeded along three main lines, an experimental program covering low heat release combustion of hydrogen and fluorine, and chemically reacting turbulent shear layers and jets in water, a theoretical model development program whose aim is to provide alternatives to gradient diffusion transport models, and a diagnostics development parallel program to advance the state-of-the-art in experimental techniques, as dictated by our main experimental effort. Substantial progress has been made in all three areas. Notably, in the experimental program, we have completed a first set of measurements in our H2 + F2 combustion facility, as well as laser induced fluorescence measurements of chemically reacting jets and shear layers in water. These experiments prove conclusively that gradient transport models are inappropriate in describing these flows. In the theoretical area, we have shown good agreement between a simple mixing model, developed under this contract sponsorship, and our measurements. In the diagnostics area, important advances have been made in laser Doppler velocimeter, high speed thermometry, laser induced fluorescence and others.

Book excerpt: Turbulence, mixing and the mutual interaction of turbulence and chemistry continue to remain perplexing and impregnable in the fron tiers of fluid mechanics. The past ten years have brought enormous advances in computers and computational techniques on the one hand and in measurements and data processing on the other. The impact of such capabilities has led to a revolution both in the understanding of the structure of turbulence as well as in the predictive methods for application in technology. The early ideas on turbulence being an array of complicated phenomena and having some form of reasonably strong coherent struc ture have become well substantiated in recent experimental work. We are still at the very beginning of understanding all of the aspects of such coherence and of the possibilities of incorporating such structure into the analytical models for even those cases where the thin shear layer approximation may be valid. Nevertheless a distinguished body of "eddy chasers" has come into existence. The structure of mixing layers which has been studied for some years in terms of correlations and spectral analysis is also getting better understood. Both probability concepts such as intermittency and conditional sampling as well as the concept of large scale structure and the associated strain seem to indicate possibilities of distinguishing and synthesizing 'engulfment' and molecular mixing.

Book excerpt: Turbulence in Mixing Operations: Theory and Application to Mixing and Reaction presents a summary of the current status of research on turbulent motion, mixing, and kinetics. Each chapter of this book discusses turbulence in the context of mixing and reaction in scalar fields. Chapters I and III discuss the classification of turbulent reacting systems and the different possibilities in this context. Chapter II reviews the properties of passive mixing. Chapter IV looks at turbulent mixing in chemically reactive flows. Chapter V uses different techniques to make parallel numerical calculations of both mixing and reaction. Finally, Chapter VI reviews turbulence and actual industrial mixing operations. This book will be of great value for chemical and industrial engineers, especially for those interested in turbulent and industrial mixing.

Bourne, Visiting Professor, University of Birmingham, UK and Emeritus Professor, ETH Zurich, Switzerland The way in which reagents are mixed can greatly influence the yield and range of products formed by fast, multiple chemical reactions. Understanding this phenomenon enables chemists to carry out reactions more selectively, make better use of raw materials and simplify product workup and separation. Turbulent Mixing and Chemical Reactions presents a balanced treatment of the connection between mixing and reaction. It contains theoretical aspects, experimental methods and expected results as well as worked examples to illustrate problem solving. This book will be of interest to all scientists involved in chemical engineering, physical chemistry, and synthetic chemists in the fine chemical and pharmaceuticals industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the fundamentals of fast liquid-phase chemical reactions and the principles of their scientific foundation, technical implementation and industrial application of new technologies. In addition, the equipment required to perform these reactions, in a turbulent mode in the chemical, petrochemical and petroleum industries, is also discussed. The macrokinetic approach has been developed with consideration of the diffusion, hydrodynamics, and heat transfer processes. Due to the advancement of fundamental knowledge, equations of practical engineering importance have been obtained for the calculations of mass and heat transfer processes carried out in conditions of high turbulence, and developed for the implementation in fast chemical reactions involving the synthesis of low molecular weight products and polymers. New methods for controlling the molecular characteristics of polymers have been developed based on the tailored regulation of the hydrodynamics of the reactive mixture flow. Typical processes have been used as model examples to reveal the influence of turbulence on the behaviour of fast chemical reactions used for the synthesis of low molecular weight products, in single-phase and two-phase reactive systems. Brand new tubular devices have been developed with the following characteristics: compact size, high productivity, and a quasi-perfect mixing operation mode in turbulent flows. These devices are subdivided into cylindrical, shell-and-tube, 'zone', and diffuser-confusor designs. Original solutions are proposed for the instrumental implementation of fast liquid-phase processes and development of continuous energy- and resource-efficient technologies for the synthesis of some large-scale compounds.

Book excerpt: This research conducted fundamental investigations of turbulent mixing, chemical reaction and combustion processes in turbulent, subsonic and supersonic flows. This program is comprised of an experimental effort, an analytical effort, a computational effort, a modeling effort, and a diagnostics development and data-acquisition effort; the latter as dictated by specific needs of the experimental part of the overall program. Our approach has been to carry out a series of detailed theoretical and experimental studies primarily in two, well-defined, fundamentally important flow fields: free shear layers and axisymmetric jets. To elucidate molecular transport effects, experiments and theory concern themselves with both liquids and gases, primarily in moderate to high Reynolds number flows. Modeling has been focused on both shear layers and turbulent jets, with an effort to include the physics of the molecular transport processes, as well as formulations of models that permit the full chemical kinetics of the combustion process to be incorporated. Our recent analytical efforts have concentrated on a hydrodynamic analysis of the stability of compressible shear layers. The computational studies are, at present, focussed at fundamental issues pertaining to the computational simulation of both compressible and incompressible flows.

Book excerpt: The combustion facility (H2-F2) is now nearing completion. As of this writing, a high speed mixing layer has been realized in the test section, using high pressure air. This certifies the flow facility down to and including the test section. Preliminary results on the effect of high heat release in a turbulent mixing zone were obtained in the NO-O3 experiment. These results are consistent with predictions based on previously measured p.d.f, 's in non-reacting mixing layers, but in conspicuous disagreements with a variety of accepted model calculations. These results demonstrate again the important influence of the large scale coherent structures on chemical reactions in turbulent flows. The Laser Induced Fluorescence technique has now been extended to allow direct space and time resolved measurements of the reaction products. The first four channels of the multi-channel laser Doppler velocimetry system are essentially completed. The first experiments using this new development are expected in the course of this summer. Digital image analysis of particle streak photography has also been explored as a direct means of two-dimensional measurements of the velocity field in a plane. Finally, a prototype system using a 100 element acoustic detector array has been completed. Initial measurements with four of these channels using 300 kHz sound have been successfully made. The fundamental laws of passing of fast liquid-phase chemical and also heat and mass transfer processes in turbulent flows are considered in the book. Development of a macrokinetics approach is generalized to the analysis of fast chemical reactions mainly based on an example of cationic isobutylene polymerization, which falls into to a new class of liquid-phase processes. The ways of decision of the hydrodynamical, thermal and kinetic movement’s equations of reaction mixture in which the fast exothermic chemical reaction runs are described. The principles and laws of formation of the essentially new mode of quasi-plug-flow mode are considered in turbulent flows ensuring quasi-isothermal conditions in zone reaction. The principles of work and area of industrial use of tubular turbulent devices cylindrical reactor, divergent-covergent reactor, shell-and-tube reactor, and reactor with fractional introduction of reactants are considered.
