Book excerpt: Kinetic studies of the thermal decomposition of nitrous oxide were conducte in the temperature range from 1000 to 2500 . the decomposition of nitrous oxide behind t e reflected shock wave in a shock tube wa investigated using photographic techniques. It appears that the rate of decomposition may be governed by the vibrational relaxation time of the lower energy valence b nd. Induction times for the rapid decompo ition of nitrous oxide range from 152 microseconds at 1430 K to zero microseconds at abo t 2500 K. The value of about 150 microseconds at 1430 K agrees qualitatively with approximate val e obtained by other investigators. (Author).

This book was released on 1965 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A quadrupole mass-filter was built and coupled to a shock tube in order to study high temperature gas kinetics. The chemical kinetics of the decomposition of nitrous oxide was studied with this apparatus in order to establish the mechanism of the reaction at temperatures above 1000K. Several instrumentation problems unique to shock tube mass-spectrometry were solved. The most serious problem, that of a rapid-pumping ion source, was overcome by the design and construction of an unusually thin ion source. The thermal decomposition of nitrous oxide was studied by shock-heating a mixture of 4% N2O in argon and monitoring the ion currents corresponding to all of the principal species involved in the reaction: N2O, N2, O2, NO, and O. In each run with the shock tube, the mass-filter was tuned to follow the concentration of a single species. Because enough runs were made with all of the species, a run for each species at the same temperature was made for several temperatures.

This book was released on 1974 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report is a compilation of data obtained from Rocketdyne Division and Pratt and Whitney Aircraft Division. The Rocketdyne study examined liquid nitrous oxide stability with contaminant materials ranging from metal oxides to polymers at a temperature just below the critical point. Based on gas chromatographic analysis, negligible decomposition of the N2O occurred in all cases. One material in these tests which showed degradation was polymer (AF-E- 124X) developed for use with N2O4. In general, it is concluded that N2O stability to catalytic and chemical decomposition is greatly increased in the liquid versus the gaseous state. The Pratt and Whitney effort concentrated on the decomposition characteristics of both gaseous and liquid nitrous oxide. The experimental program evaluated the ignition, flame speeds of induced reactions, and quenching characteristics of the decomposition reaction. The results demonstrate that gaseous N2O can be ignited either by rapid compression or electric spark at elevated pressures. They also indicate that nitrous oxide may safely be handled under extreme conditions in the cooled liquid state but that great hazards exist in the gaseous condition at elevated pressure and/or temperature.

Nicholson and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thermal decomposition of N2O, N2O + .88N2, and N2O + air was investigated in a flowing system. These studies were conducted at 11.2 atmospheres over the temperature range from 772K to 1233K, and total flow rates from 1.0 to 3.76 liters/sec. Total residence times in the heated section range from approximately .1 to 2.5 sec. A maximum reacted gas temperature of 1588K was obtained. Chromatographic analysis of the products of decomposition showed that the maximum nitrogen dioxide yield was 4.44% for the N2O + air mixture, 5.09% for the N20 + .88N2, mixture, 7.55% for the pure N2O decomposition. Spectrographic observations of the emitted radiation from the decomposition reactions showed the presence of nitrogen dioxide in the reaction. Nitrogen dioxide absorption bands were found. There was no evidence of any discrete bands in emission. (Author).
