Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chemical Constitution and Physiological Action The action of chemical agents upon the animal organ ism, and particularly upon man, is of the greatest importance and interest. Far too little has been done toward systematizing our knowledge of this subject, and there is no doubt that this field offers an enormous opportunity for useful research. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Chemical Physiology for the Use of Students Chemical Physiology is a branch of physiological science which deals with the chemical composition of the body and the part played by the various substances found there in carrying out the phenomena of life. It thus differs from Physiological Chemistry, which is a branch of organic chemistry, and treats of the chemical composition and reactions of physiological substances. These two subjects are Closely interwoven, and this book really deals with both, although special prominence will be given to their physiological aspect. The substances found in the body are numerous, and in most cases complex; the majority of the foods from which the body is built up are equally elaborate, for animals do not possess to such an extent as plants do the power of building up complex from simple materials. The elements found in the body are carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, sulphur, phosphorus, fluorine, Chlorine, iodine, Silicon, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, lithium, iron, and occasionally manganese, copper, and lead. Of these very few occur in the free state. Oxygen and nitrogen (to a small extent) are found dissolved in the blood-plasma; hydrogen is formed by putrefaction in the alimentary canal. With some few exceptions such as these, the elements enumerated above are found combined with one another to form compounds. The body, than from that of their chemical relationships to one another; hence the book deals with a department of Physiology more than with a department of Chemistry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Physiological Chemistry IT follows from the law of the conservation of force and matter that living beings, plants and animals, can produce neither new matter nor new force. They are only called upon to appropriate and assimilate already existing material and to transform it into new forms of force. Out of a few relatively Simple combinations, especially carbon dioxide and water, together with ammonium compounds or nitrates, and a few mineral substances, which serve as its food, the plant builds up the extremely complicated constituents of. Its organism, proteids, carbohydrates, fats, resins, organic acids, etc. The chemical work which is performed in the plant must therefore, in the majority of cases, consist in syntheses; but besides these, processes of reduction take place to a great extent. The kinetic energy of the sunlight induces the green parts of the plant to split off oxygen from the carbon dioxide and water, and this reduction is generally considered as the starting-point of the following syntheses. In the first place formaldehyde is produced, co2 h, o z ch, o O which then by condensation is transformed into dextrose, and this then serves in the structure of other bodies. The kinetic energy of the sun, which produces this splitting, is not lost; it is only transformed into another form of force - into the potential energy or chemical tension of the free oxygen on the one side, and the combinations less oxygenated, produced by the synthesis, on the other side. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alcohol and the Constitution of Man: Being a Popular Scientific Account of the Chemical History and Properties of Alcohol, and Its Leading Effects Upon the Healthy Human Constitution I found it necessary to explain something of the properties of organ izod substances generally, and especially of that class which comprises the alimentary principles of diet; that I might show how it 19 that a liquid, taken into the stomach, revolutionizes the intellectual nature, it became important to set forth, in a clear light, the absolute depend ence of mental operations upon material conditions of the Brain. It is hoped that these portions of the work, independent of their bearing upon the main subject, will be found far from uninteresting, as they cast light upon the means and policy which God, the Infinite Author of science, employs in sustaining the daily life of a human being. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of Physiological Chemistry in Thirty Lectures Physiology and physiological chemistry were at one time a single field of investigation. The latter, owing to the remarkable progress of the exact sciences chemistry and physics, has now developed to such an impor tant branch of natural science that it is altogether impossible today for any one scientist to master thoroughly in all its details the whole field of physiology. Little by little, there has developed a sharp distinction between pure physiology and physiological chemistry. It is clear that an artificial separation of two such closely related fields of investiga tion must work to disadvantage for the development of each, so that it is fortunate to find it recognized more and more that the whole science of physiology can only develop satisfactorily when there is an intimate exchange of ideas between investigators in the two fields. The chemical decompositions in the tissues do not take place beside the physiological processes, but are bound up with them. In no single case can we carry out any distinction-in such a sense; and with those organs in which the relations between the functions and the metabolism are not known, this is chiefly because of our limited knowledge concerning the latter. In this connection we need only recall the whole nervous system. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Directions for a Practical Course in Chemical Physiology In writing this book for the use of medical students the author has departed from the method usually followed. The subject matter is practically limited to experiments and deductions from the experiments, and is not meant to supply the full and ordered information obtainable from a text-book of physiological chemistry. The arrangement of the work differs from that generally followed, in that the student is at the outset provided with substances familiar to him, such as a potato, an egg, lard, butter, etc. From these he prepares, by simple chemical manipulations, the proximate constituents and their decomposition products, and studies their chemical reactions and physical properties. In this way he is introduced to the subject without interposing complex chemical conceptions, which the usual arrangement of dividing the subject into the study of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins necessarily involves. In teaching practical physiological chemistry to students, who have had only an elementary training in organic chemistry, it seems on the whole more satisfactory and more scientific to impose no tax on the faith of the pupil, even if the work covered is less comprehensive than it might otherwise be. The knowledge acquired in such a course as outlined in this book is at least real, and questions beyond the scope of personal demonstrations by the student may well be left to treatment in lectures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Chemical Physiology No apology is necessary in presenting to the American medical public the work of one so widely known and universally acknowledged as an authority as Professor Lehmann. In so doing, however, I am surrounded with more than ordinary difficulties. A correct English translation of a German work is no easy task; but when the original is not a full discussion of the subject considered, but as compressed a statement of facts as is compatible with clearness, the difficulty of avoiding idiomatic expressions is greatly increased. From Dr. Lehmann's views of the forces operative in living organisms, I must express my dissent. Dr. Jackson has been kind enough, at my request, to prepare an article on these views, stating the doctrines which he has so ably advocated for many years. To adapt the work for the use of students of physiology, I have incorporated in the text additional matter (derived mainly from notes on Dr. Jackson's Lectures, Carpenter's Human Physiology, Todd and Bowman's Physiological Anatomy, Kolliker's Microscopic Anatomy, &c.), of a more purely physiological nature, which will be found included in brackets, thus [ - ]. Short notes have also been added, in the shape of an Appendix, on kindred subjects not treated of by the author; and illustrations selected from various sources have been introduced, instead of referring, as the author has done, to the "Atlas of Physiological Chemistry, by Otto Funke."
