Book excerpt: The chemical constituents of essential oils and extractives from resin, bark and heartwood of Agathis borneensis were studied using gas chromatography-flame ionization detector (GC-FID) and gas chromatopgraphy-mass spectrometer (GC-MS). The essential oils were extracted using hydrodistillation method while the extractives were extracted using solvent with increasing polarity; hexane, dichlirimrthane, ethyl acetate and methanol. The major components in the resin oil were a pinene (31.15%), B-limonene )17.92%), B-pinene (11.36%) and terpinen-4-ol (8.41%). While, B-pinene (9.14%), terpinen-4-ol (8.99%). a-pinene (8.95%) and a-terpineol (8.93%) were the major constituents in the bark oil. Heartwood oil was dominated by heaxadecanoic acid (66.85%) with monoterpenes as minor constituents such as y-terpinene and terpinen-4-ol.

Their efficacy as antimicrobial agents is related to the activity of several natural compounds belonging to different chemical families that can act both in synergy with each other and with other antibiotics. The antibiotic resistance detected among pathogens has been quickly increasing in recent years, and the control of some of these microorganisms is becoming a planetary emergency for human and animal health. The control of the microbial growth is a problem of great importance also for the food industry (food deterioration and shelf life extension) and for the world of cultural heritage (indoor and outdoor phenomena of biodeterioration). Essential oils can play an important role in this scenario, due their recognized broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity. Therefore, the main subject of this Special Issue includes an essential oil-based approach to control microrganisms in areas such as human and veterinary medicine, entomology, food industry and agriculture. In addition, the chemical composition of essential oils from endemic and rare medicinal/aromatic plants, nanoformulations of essential oils, applications in human and veterinary medicine and its use as animal feeding supplements are topics covered in this Special Issue

It addresses three audiences: 1) those involved in assessing and regulating timber harvesting activities in Southeast Asia, 2) those involved in trying to achieve conservation goals in the region, and 3) those undertaking research to improve multipurpose forest management. This book shows that forest management can be improved in many simple ways to allow timber extraction and wildlife conservation to be more compatible than under current practices. The recommendations can also be valuable to the many governmental and non-governmental organisations promoting sustainable forest management and eco-labelling. Finally, it identifies a number of shortcomings and gaps in knowledge, which the hope can interest the scientific community and promote further research. This review is, an important scientific step toward understanding and improving sustainable forestry practices for long-term biodiversity conservation. Even in the short term, however, significant improvements can be made to improve both conservation and the efficiency of forest management, and there is no need to delay action due to a perceived lack of information. In the longer term it is expected that the recommendations from this review will be implemented, and that further research will continue to help foster an acceptable balance among the choices needed to maintain healthy wildlife populations and biodiversity in a productive forest estate.
