Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a ground breaking medical technique which uses lasers to activate light-sensitive chemicals to treat cancer and other diseases without resorting to surgery. For the first time, Chemical Aspects of Photodynamic Therapy introduces in an accessible way the physics, chemistry and biology behind the technique. This highly authoritative account of the account of the rapidly developing field of PDT explores its chemical basis, while presenting information in its historical context. Haematoporphyrin derivative is considered in detail, together with the new 'second generation' photosensitisers , such as chlorins, bacteriochlorins and phthalocyanines. Photosensitisers which are currently in clinical trials are compared and reference is made to new light sources, biological and clinical findings, and prospects for future developments. This book is essential reading for new students and researchers alike studying PDT. It is recommended particularly for photochemists, as well as photobiologists and clinicians. About the author Raymond Bonnett was born in London in 1931. After a spell in the air force, he graduated from Imperial College, going on to Cambridge to research under Alexander Todd and A.W. Johnson and then to Harvard to work with R.B. Woodward. He is now Scotia Research Professor of Chemistry at Queen Mary and Wesfield College, University of London, UK. He has been active in research on photosensitisers for 25 years and has published over 200 papers on the chemistry of porphyrins and related compounds.

Book excerpt: The main objective of this book is to present the recent applications of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in treating cancer and other diseases. The limitations associated with current PDT agents, and the synthetic designs that have been used in various laboratories are also discussed. The utility of certain tumor-avid agent for cancer imaging (fluorescence, PET, MRI) is also summarized. The book also includes the use of delivery vehicles, including nanoparticles in improving the tumor-specificity of the desired agents. The book is basically focused on the translational approach of drug development. By providing certain specific examples, a clear concept of moving a 'product' from the bench to bed-side is also discussed. To have a clear concept of drug development the book is divided in three parts — Medicinal Chemistry, Mechanistic and Clinical studies. Each part includes the contributions from the leading scientists with extensive experience in the respective field. The handbook is assembled by renowned scientists Dr Dougherty, known as the father of PDT, Dr Kessel, well known for his contributions on mechanism of PDT and Dr Pandey for his inventions in developing improved agents for PDT and cancer-imaging.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume combines reviews on the latest advances in photochemical research with specific topical highlights in the field. Starting with periodical reports of the recent literature on organic and computational aspects including reports on computational photochemistry and chemiluminescence of biological and nanotechnological molecules, photochemistry of alkenes, dienes and polyenes, aromatic compounds and oxygen-containing functions. The final chapter of this section is a review of industrial application of photochemistry from 2014 to 2019. Coverage continues with highlighted topics, in the second part, from ruthenium-caged bioactive compounds, advances in logically and light induced systems, developments of metal-free photocatalysts, photoresponsive organophosphorus materials and applications of photo-fragmentation in synthesis, photo-click chemistry and azo-based molecular photoswitches. This volume will again include a section entitled 'SPR Lectures on Photochemistry', a collection of examples for academic readers to introduce a photochemistry topic and precious help for students in photochemistry. Providing critical analysis of the topics, this book is essential reading for anyone wanting to keep up to date with the literature on photochemistry and its applications. "A certain amount of energy destroys the same amount of CO2 according to the whether it is administered continuously or intermittently. In order to rationalize this result there are two possibilities, either the destruction of CO2 further occurred in the dark periods, which would lead to the same form of energy storing form, or in the illuminated period the reaction goes at twice the rate." O. Warburg, Biochem. Z., 1919, 100, 230-270.

Book excerpt: This book covers the broad field of cellular, molecular, preclinical, and clinical imaging either associated with or combined with photodynamic therapy (PDT). It showcases how this approach is used clinically for cancer, infections, and diseases characterized by unwanted tissue such as atherosclerosis or blindness. Because the photosensitizers are also fluorescent, the book also addresses various imaging systems such as confocal microscopy and small animal imaging systems, and highlights how they have been used to follow and optimize treatment, and to answer important mechanistic questions. Chapters also discuss how imaging has made important contributions to clinical outcomes in skin, bladder, and brain cancers, as well as in the development of theranostic agents for detection and treatment of disease. This book provides a resource for physicians and research scientists in cell biology, microscopy, optics, molecular imaging, oncology, and drug discovery.

Book excerpt: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) was discovered over one hundred years ago after observing the death of microorganisms upon exposure to dyes and light. It is the combination of non-toxic dyes and harmless visible light that, in the presence of oxygen, produce highly toxic reactive species. The principal medical application during the last century was in cancer therapy but, in these days of rising antibiotic resistance, PDT shows increasing promise as an alternative approach to treating infections. PDT has also been used in blood product sterilization, peridontology, acne reduction, and the treatment of viral lesions such as those caused by human papilloma virus. It may also have potential as an environmentally friendly pesticide. This is the first and only book to comprehensively cover the use of light and photosensitising agents for controlling microbial pathogens. It provides a comprehensive and up-to-date coverage of an emerging field. There are several chapters on the design of antimicrobial photosensitizers, their use to kill pathogenic organisms and their success in treating infections in animal models. It has long been known that gram-positive bacteria are highly susceptible to photoinactivation but the book also discusses means of widening the range of microorganisms that can be tackled by PDT. Edited by two pioneers in the application of PDT to medical and environmental issues, this book covers the basic science, translational research in animals, and the clinical applications in various medical specialities. It represents an indispensable resource for microbiologists and infectious disease doctors as well as dentists, dermatologists, gastroenterologists and transfusion specialists.

Book excerpt: Edited by a team of highly respected researchers combining their expertise in chemistry, physics, and medicine, this book focuses on the use of rutheniumcontaining complexes in artificial photosynthesis and medicine. Following a brief introduction to the basic coordination chemistry of ruthenium complexes and their synthesis in section one, as well as their photophysical and photochemical properties, the authors discuss in detail the major concepts of artificial photosynthesis and mechanisms of hydrogen production and water oxidation with ruthenium in section two. The third section of the text covers biological properties and important medical applications of ruthenium complexes as therapeutic agents or in diagnostic imaging. Aimed at stimulating research in this active field, this is an invaluable information source for researchers in academia, health research institutes and governmental departments working in the field of organometallic chemistry, green and sustainable chemistry as well as medicine/drug discovery, while equally serving as a useful reference also for scientists in industry.
