Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is physiology and why should you care? Some universities have removed physiology from their curriculum, because both students and teachers felt it was too hard to learn. However, if you are among those hoping to enter a healthcare profession you will need to complete course credits in physiology. This is the first in a series of small books created to show you how to study physiology successfully. It provides the basic framework necessary for understanding physiology in general and human physiology in particular. It is written so that you can understand the information even if you have no previous exposure to scientific jargon. Most physiology courses start with a very brief introduction to chemistry. But, it is difficult for beginners to see the relevance of chemistry to the study of physiology. Chemistry in chemistry class appears different than chemistry in physiology class. In chemistry, if you want chemicals to react to each other, you either add or subtract heat. To accommodate the body's need for a constant temperature, human physiology's use of chemistry's principles requires innovative design and customization. You will find here answers to the following and much more:• How do bonds in molecules form?• What is that mysterious stuff called molecular energy?• What is water chemistry, and why is water necessary for life to exist?• How and why is neutral blood pH maintained?• What is a semi permeable membrane?• What is osmotic pressure and why does it matter?• How does hydrostatic pressure differ from osmotic pressure?• How can gaseous oxygen and carbon dioxide flow in opposite directions during breathing?• What do body fluids have to do with nerve cell function? Many authors of textbooks for physiology are overwhelmed by the amount of new information that arrives almost daily. Physiology is far from being a “finished science”. For example, the complete human gene sequence was revealed in the past 15 years, and knowledge of the human immune system has evolved since 1990 from being a mysterious force to being recognized a complex sophisticated defense system. Yet, the basic principles on which physiology is established did not change. Ten years from now details about how living systems survive will surely expand exponentially, but the basic chemical framework of physiology will continue to remain the same.In these pages you will discover how closely human physiology is aligned with Earth's environment. When you finish reading Physiology: Custom-designed Chemistry, you will know the answer to the question “What is physiology and why should you care?”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume illustrates the extent to which the traditional distinction between biochemical and physiological processes is being obliterated by molecular biology. It can hardly be doubted that the revolution in cell and molecular biology is leading to core knowledge that provides an outline of the integrative and reductionist approach. We view this as the beginning of a new era, that of the integration of learning. As in the preceding volumes, the choice of topics has been deliberate not only because of the need to keep the volume within reasonable bounds but also because of the need to avoid information over-load. Several relevant topics are dealt with in other modules; for example, the role of G proteins in transmembrane signalling is covered in the Membranes and Cell Signalling module (i.e., Volume 7). Omissions are of course inevitable but they are minor. A case in point is the subject of phosphatases, the treatment of which does not take into account calcineurin. One of the key functions of this Ca2+ -activated protein phosphatase that is also regulated by calmodulin is to desphosphorylate voltage-dependent Ca2+ channels. The mere recognition of such omissions before or after consulting textbooks and journals should be a spur to a more complete discussion by the student of the subject in a small group teaching setting.

Book excerpt: The XXX Congress of the International Union of Physiological Sciences took place in Vancouver, Canada, in July 1986; and this Volume contains a selection of the Review Lectures which formed part of the Congress programme. They cover most of the areas of contemporary physiology and were presented by distinguished scientists from many parts of the world. An innovation at this Congress was the inclusion in the programme of a number of lectures devoted to historical subjects. These lectures attracted large audiences at the meetings, and three of them also appear in this book. Finally, the Plenary Lectures which formed part of the opening and closing ceremonies and which deal with some aspects of Canadian physiological history, find a place here as well. The Editors are grateful to all of the authors who provided the manuscripts which go to make up this book, and to John Donald for his invaluable assistance in the preparation of the final text; as well of course to all of the contributors whose participation made the Congress the success which it was. It is hoped that this Volume will provide a useful memento of the event.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Directions for a Practical Course in Chemical Physiology IN writing this book for the use of medical students the author has departed from the method usually followed. The subject matter is practically limited to experiments and deductions from the experiments, and is not meant to supply the full.and ordered information obtainable from a text-book of physiological chemistry. The arrangement of the work differs from that generally followed, in that the student is at the outset provided with substances familiar to him, such as a potato, an egg, lard, butter, etc. From these he prepares, by simple chemical manipulations, the proximate constituents and their decomposition pro ducts, and studies their chemical reactions and physical properties. In this way he is introduced to the subject without interposing complex chemical conceptions, which the usual arrangement of dividing the subject into the study of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins necessarily involves. In teaching practical physiological chemistry to students, who have had only an elementary training in organic chemistry, it seems on the whole more satisfactory and more scientific to impose no tax on the faith of the pupil, even if the work covered is less comprehensive than it might otherwise be. The knowledge acquired in such a course as outlined in this book is at least real, and questions beyond the scope of personal demonstrations by the student may well be left to treatment in lectures. In order to induce the student to record his own observations; to draw his conclusions from them, and to correlate the facts observed in. Featured particularly are chemists Liebig, Baeyer and Emil Fischer and biochemists Hoppe-Seyler, Kuhne and Hofmeister. In a final chapter, Fruton considers the relevance of the conclusions drawn from the style of these 19th- and early 20th-centuy men to the styles of more recent research groups in the chemical and biochemical sciences. Special emphasis is placed on their influence on their scientific progenies in Germany, and in England, Russia, and the U.S. Attention is given to the individual contributions of the junior members of these scientific groups to the growth of knowledge within their disciplines.
