Book excerpt: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has recommended that states develop Pesticide Management Plans for four agricultural chemicals - alachlor, atrazine, metolachlor, and simazine - used in Utah as herbicides in the production of corn and sorghum, and to control weeds and undesired vegetation (such as along right-of-ways or utility substations). This report and accompanying maps are intended to be used as part of these Pesticide Management Plans to provide local, state, and federal government agencies and agricultural pesticide users with a base of information concerning sensitivity and vulnerability of ground water in the basin-fill aquifer (bedrock is not evaluated) to agricultural pesticides in Cache Valley, Cache County, Utah. We used existing data to produce pesticide sensitivity and vulnerability maps by applying an attribute ranking system specifically tailored to the western United States using Geographic Information System analysis methods. 28 pages + 2 plates

Book excerpt: "The primary goals of this study are to (1) characterize the hydrogeology of the Ogden Valley drainage basin as it pertains to the occurrence and flow of groundwater, with emphasis on delineating the valley-fill aquifer thickness and determining the water-yielding characteristics of unconsolidated and fractured-rock aquifers in the study area; (2) understand the interaction between surface water and groundwater; (3) document current groundwater quality in the valley-fill aquifer; (4) develop a water budget for the drainage basin; and (5) update septic-tank system density recommendations based on the water budget" --Page 2.

Book excerpt: The water resources of Rush Valley were assessed during 2008–2010 with an emphasis on refining the understanding of the groundwater-flow system and updating the groundwater budget. Surface-water resources within Rush Valley are limited and are generally used for agriculture. Groundwater is the principal water source for most other uses including supplementing irrigation. Most groundwater withdrawal in Rush Valley is from the unconsolidated basin-fill aquifer where conditions are generally unconfined near the mountain front and confined at lower altitudes near the valley center. Productive aquifers also occur in fractured bedrock along the valley margins and beneath the basin-fill deposits in some areas.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The City of Millville, located in a prime location for aquifer storage and recovery (ASR), is having issues with elevated nitrate in the Glenridge well, a public water supply sourced from the Cache Valley principal aquifer. To alleviate high nitrate, the city performed an initial injection and pumping test using the Glenridge well. Millville injected water from Garr Spring, another public water supply source of which they own water rights, into the Glenridge well for one week at a rate of 500 gallons per minute. They then pumped the well while monitoring geochemistry to determine the effects on the Cache Valley principal aquifer system. The pre-injection nitrate concentration in the Glenridge well was 7.65 mg/l nitrate as nitrogen, and the nitrate concentration after pumping more than 172% of the volume of water injected was 6.52 mg/l nitrate as nitrogen. There is likely some dispersion of the injected spring water via advection in the aquifer.

Book excerpt: This study is an investigation of the feasibility of an aquifer storage and recovery project using the existing water supply infrastructure of the city of Millville, Utah. The project involved injecting water from a public water supply spring into a public water supply well. Geochemical analysis indicates that the major ion chemistry of the spring water is very similar to that of the principal aquifer, however, the spring water would likely cause minor geochemical changes in the groundwater due to oxidation. The study also showed that the injection well had elevated nitrate concentration which is likely due to septic systems in the area. Overall, the pilot tests showed that injection of water for storage would not be detrimental to the principal aquifer, which has significant storage abilities beyond the capacity of Millville’s water system; however elevated nitrate in the aquifer is a problem that should be addressed.

Book excerpt: This report describes the nongeothermal hydrogeologic system of the Cove Creek basin and an adjoining part of the Beaver River basin north of Milford, in Millard and Beaver Counties, Utah. The groundwater system in the study area hosts two commercial geothermal reservoirs, provides the entire agricultural and culinary water supply, and may be connected with groundwater in adjoining basins. The report presents a regional hydrogeologic framework assessment, including a newly compiled 1:100,000-scale geologic map, five schematic cross sections, estimates of thickness and hydrologic character of the basin fill based on geophysics and available well logs, and a new potentiometric surface map for the study area. The report also presents and interprets new and compiled geochemical and isotopic data and a new water budget for the study area that includes estimates of subsurface flow to adjoining basins. 65 pages + 2 plates

Book excerpt: This report summarizes the bedrock geology of the western part of the northern Wasatch Range in eastern Box Elder County, Utah , and its relation to ground-water resources. The southern part of the northern Wasatch Range is herein informally designated the Willard mountains; the northern part of the northern Wasatch Range is the Wellsville Mountains. Box Elder Canyon is the boundary between these mountains. The work was performed at the request of the Bear River Water Conservancy District and the Utah Division of Water Resources, and represents a preliminary step in the evaluation of groundwater resources in bedrock and their potential development in eastern Box Elder County.

Hurlow and published by Utah Geological Survey. This book was released on 2015-02-01 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report (269 pages, 4 plates) presents hydrogeologic, groundwater-monitoring, and hydrochemical studies by the Utah Geological Survey (UGS) in Snake Valley, Tule Valley, and Fish Springs Flat in Millard and Juab Counties, west-central Utah. Data From the newly established UGS groundwater-monitoring network establish current baseline conditions, and will help quantify the effects of future variations in climate and groundwater pumping. New hydrochemical data show that groundwater quality is generally good, major-solute chemistry varies systematically from recharge to discharge areas, and suggest that most groundwater was recharged over one thousand years ago, implying low recharge rates and/or long or slow flow paths. Two aquifer tests yield estimates of transmissivity and storativity for the carbonate-rock and basin-fill aquifers. Variations in the potentiometric surface, hydrogeology, and hydrochemistry are consistent with the hypothesis of regional groundwater flow from Snake Valley northeast to Tule Valley and Fish Springs. Collectively, our work delineates groundwater levels, flow, and chemistry in Snake Valley and adjacent basins to a much greater degree than previously possible, and emphasizes the sensitivity of the groundwater system to possible increases in groundwater pumping.
