Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents a comprehensive and interdisciplinary review of the major cutting-edge technology research areas—especially those on new materials and methods as well as advanced structures and properties—for various sensor and detection devices The development of sensors and detectors at macroscopic or nanometric scale is the driving force stimulating research in sensing materials and technology for accurate detection in solid, liquid, or gas phases; contact or non-contact configurations; or multiple sensing. The emphasis on reduced-scale detection techniques requires the use of new materials and methods. These techniques offer appealing perspectives given by spin crossover organic, inorganic, and composite materials that could be unique for sensor fabrication. The influence of the length, composition, and conformation structure of materials on their properties, and the possibility of adjusting sensing properties by doping or adding the side-groups, are indicative of the starting point of multifarious sensing. The role of intermolecular interactions, polymer and ordered phase formation, as well as behavior under pressure and magnetic and electric fields are also important facts for processing ultra-sensing materials. The 15 chapters written by senior researchers in Advanced Sensor and Detection Materials cover all these subjects and key features under three foci: 1) principals and perspectives, 2) new materials and methods, and 3) advanced structures and properties for various sensor devices.

Book excerpt: The confluence of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack and the U.S. Army's historic role to support civil authorities has resulted in substantial new challenges for the Army. To help meet these challenges, the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Research and Technology requested the National Research Council (NRC) carry out a series of studies on how science and technology could assist the Army prepare for its role in homeland security (HLS). The NRC's Board on Army Science and Technology formed the Committee on Army Science and Technology for Homeland Security to accomplish that assignment. The Committee was asked to review relevant literature and activities, determine areas of emphasis for Army S&T in support of counter terrorism and anti-terrorism, and recommend high-payoff technologies to help the Army fulfill its mission. The Department of Defense Counter-Terrorism Technology Task Force identified four operational areas in reviewing technical proposals for HLS operations: indications and warning; denial and survivability; recovery and consequence management; and attribution and retaliation. The study sponsor asked the Committee to use these four areas as the basis for its assessment of the science and technology (S&T) that will be important for the Army's HLS role. Overall, the Committee found that: There is potential for substantial synergy between S&T work carried out by the Army for its HLS responsibilities and the development of the next generation Army, the Objective Force. The Army National Guard (ARNG) is critical to the success of the Army's HLS efforts.

Book excerpt: This thoughtful book provides a much-needed look at the vulnerabilities and security of our nation's water sources. Written as a result of 9/11 and in response to the critical needs of water/wastewater plant managers, plant engineers, design engineers, and utility managers, it addresses the need to incorporate security upgrades in existing facility systems and careful planning in all new construction sites. Each chapter provides professional guidance on designing, operating, maintaining, and mitigating threats to water/wastewater systems, including both treatment/distribution and treatment/collection systems, to ensure state-of-the-art security. The author covers all aspects of monitoring, response, critical infrastructure redundancy, and recovery and provides other strategic information, including methodologies for vulnerability assessments, specialized remote monitoring equipment, and U.S. EPA's security toolbox items. No matter what your background, if you are responsible for protecting a water source, your facility stands to gain from the principles described in this book.
