Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition offers you the first Modern English version of Chaucer’s only previously untranslated major work, Boece. Boece is Chaucer’s Middle English translation of the 6th-century CE philosopher Boethius’s The Consolation of Philosophy. For over a thousand years, The Consolation underpinned Christian understanding of Fate, Fortune, Free Will, and Divine Providence, and its ideas influenced Chaucer’s major works. While many editions offer a Modern English translation from the original Latin, this edition gives you an approachable version of Chaucer’s translation and puts you face-to-face with his phrasings and emendations. Here, the father of English poetry’s voice finally speaks up, so you can enjoy his poetic turns and even track where the language from Boece echoes in The Canterbury Tales and Troilus and Criseyde.

Book excerpt: Chaucer's translation of Boethius' work is related to medieval intellectual culture, with attention to Trevet's Boethius commentary. This collection seeks to locate the Boece within the medievaltradition of the academic study and translation of the Consolatiophilosophiae, thereby relating the work to the intellectual culturewhich made it possible. It begins with the fullest study yet undertakenof the Boethius commentary of Nicholas Trevet, this being a majorsource of the Boece. There follow editions and translationsof the major passages in Trevet's commentary whereNeoplatonic issuesare confronted, then Chaucer's debt to Trevet is assessed in a detailedreview. The many choices which faced Chaucer as a translator are indicated and the Boeceis placed in a long line of interpreters of Boethius in which both Latin commentators and vernacular translators played their parts. Finally, a view is offered of the Boece as anexample of late-medieval `academic translation': if the Boeceis assigned to this genre, it may be judged a considerable success.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1992 The Medieval Consolation of Philosophy is an annotated bibliography looking at the scholarship generated by the translations of the works of Boethius. The book looks at translations which were produced in medieval England, France, and Germany and addresses the influence exercised by Boethius, which extended into almost every area of medieval intellectual and artistic life. The book acts in two ways, as a whole the book acts as a bibliography and study of the European tradition of Consolatio translations, but viewed on a chapter-by-chapter basis, it is a collection of independent bibliographies on the individual vernacular traditions. The book contains separate chapters looking at the Consolatio traditions of medieval France and Germany.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chaucer and the Consolation of Philosophy of Boethius: A Dissertation Presented in Partial Requirement for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy at Princeton University in 1914, and Later Revised Philosophy, a work divided alternately into proses and meters, containing serious thought and flashes of poetry, and based on the philosophical theories of the best of the Greeks and Romans. Throughout the Middle Ages this was his most popular work, and it was translated into almost every Euro pean language. Its translators in English, besides Chaucer, include Kin-g Alfred, Caxton, and Queen Elisabeth. Although its thought is based on pagan philosophy Boethius has been canonized as a Christian saint. For the text of Chaucer's translation 1 have used Skeat's edition in the Oxford Chaucer, Vol; II, and for the Latin original, the edition of Peiper. I wish to acknowledge the kindness of Professor M. H. Liddell in sending to me portions of the French translation used by Chaucer, the kindness of Professor M. W. Croll for the help he gave me in the con sideration of Chaucer's prose style, and of Professor C. G. Osgood for suggestions throughout. Especially am I indebted for generous assistance and helpful criticism to Professor R. K. Root, under whose direction the dissertation was written. Book excerpt: Consolation of Philosophy (Latin: Consolatio Philosophiae) is a philosophical work by Boethius, written around the year 524. It has been described as the single most important and influential work in the West on Medieval and early Renaissance Christianity, and is also the last great Western work of the Classical Period. Anicius Manlius Severinus Boëthius, commonly called Boethius (c. 480–524 or 525 AD), was a philosopher of the early 6th century. He was born in Rome to an ancient and prominent family which included emperors Petronius Maximus and Olybrius and many consuls. His father, Flavius Manlius Boethius, was consul in 487 after Odoacer deposed the last Western Roman Emperor. Boethius, of the noble Anicia family, entered public life at a young age and was already a senator by the age of 25. Boethius himself was consul in 510 in the kingdom of the Ostrogoths. In 522 he saw his two sons become consuls. Boethius was imprisoned and eventually executed by King Theodoric the Great, who suspected him of conspiring with the Eastern Roman Empire. While jailed, Boethius composed his Consolation of Philosophy, a philosophical treatise on fortune, death, and other issues. The Consolation became one of the most popular and influential works of the Middle Ages.
