Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chats With the Little Ones I have kept the idea of the school-room, where the children are supposed to meet day after day to recite and converse with their teacher, who leads them on by a series of conversations from one ideato another, thus forming an unbroken chain from the first chapter to the last. If in some instances I should seem more explicit than would apparently be necessary to American readers it has been from the fear of breaking the perfect chain, which is the charm of the book. I have also in many oases been abrupt in introducing subjects widely apart from the topic of the hour. This in the original is done to explain some French word that the children do not yet understand, and it could not be wholly omitted without destroying the harmony of the chapter. While I have endeavored to express, as nearly as possible, the same ideas in English as in the French of Dr. Sauveur, I have carefully avoided a literal trans lation. Many of the anecdotes and several complete chapters are taken from the Petites Causeries, some of the former replacing conversations in the Causeries aveo les Enfants, which are useful only to explain French words, and have no interest for an American reader. This mingling of the two books makes it impossible to use the English one as a key to either of the F reneh originals; a possibility I have dili gently studied to avoid, as it would be utterly contrary to Dr. Sauveur's system of teaching. This book, therefore, is independent in itself. It is hoped that it will be useful in two ways: as a pleasant story-book for mothers to read to their children, or for children who are old enough to read by themselves and as a reading-bbok in schools for our little ones. The books employed in such schoolshave, too often, little interest, containing words rather than ideas. The conversations in the following chap ters, while extremely simple in themselves, open the way to more advanced thought, enabling the teacher to expand the ideas, according to his or her judgment. He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Irish Classical Self considers the role of classical languages and learning in the construction of Irish cultural identities in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, focusing in particular on the "lower ranks" of society. This eighteenth century notion of the "classical self" grew partly out of influential identity narratives developed in the seventeenth century by clerics on the European continent: responding to influential critiques of the Irish as ignorant barbarians, they published works demonstrating the value and antiquity of indigenous culture and made traditional annalistic claims about the antiquity of Irish and connections between Ireland and the biblical and classical world broadly known. In the eighteenth century these and related ideas spread through Irish poetry, which demonstrated the complex and continuing interaction of languages in the country: a story of conflict, but also of communication and amity. The "classical strain" in the context of the non-elite may seem like an unlikely phenomenon but the volume exposes the truth in the legend of the classical hedge schools which offered tuition in Latin and Greek to poor students, for whom learning and claims to learning had particular meaning and power. This volume surveys official data on schools and scholars together with literary and other narratives, showing how the schools, inherently transgressive because of the Penal Laws, drove concerns about class and political loyalty and inspired seductive but contentious retrospectives. It demonstrates that classical interests among those "in the humbler walks of life" ran in the same channels as interests in Irish literature and contemporary Irish poetry and demands a closer look at the phenomenon in its entirety.
