Book excerpt: Excerpt from Conversations With Children on the Gospels, Vol. 1 Those who are familiar with the "Record of a School" will need no explanation of the following conversations. To those who are not it may be necessary to say, that there is a school in Boston, the object of which is to unfold the natures of children, in the true order of their faculties. The recorder of these conversations, being present at the opening and first discipline of this school, thought the facts that transpired before her eyes worthy of being presented to the world, and hence came the "Record of a School." It was intimated, in that record, that Mr. Alcott intended to enter upon a course of readings on the New Testament, in which he would pursue a method based on the same principles as guided the lessons on self-inspection, there recorded. They are graded to the eleven or twelve year-old. This seems to be the middle-of-the road age for children. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chats With the Little Ones I have kept the idea of the school-room, where the children are supposed to meet day after day to recite and converse with their teacher, who leads them on by a series of conversations from one ideato another, thus forming an unbroken chain from the first chapter to the last. If in some instances I should seem more explicit than would apparently be necessary to American readers it has been from the fear of breaking the perfect chain, which is the charm of the book. I have also in many oases been abrupt in introducing subjects widely apart from the topic of the hour. This in the original is done to explain some French word that the children do not yet understand, and it could not be wholly omitted without destroying the harmony of the chapter. While I have endeavored to express, as nearly as possible, the same ideas in English as in the French of Dr. Sauveur, I have carefully avoided a literal trans lation. Many of the anecdotes and several complete chapters are taken from the Petites Causeries, some of the former replacing conversations in the Causeries aveo les Enfants, which are useful only to explain French words, and have no interest for an American reader. This mingling of the two books makes it impossible to use the English one as a key to either of the F reneh originals; a possibility I have dili gently studied to avoid, as it would be utterly contrary to Dr. Sauveur's system of teaching. This book, therefore, is independent in itself. It is hoped that it will be useful in two ways: as a pleasant story-book for mothers to read to their children, or for children who are old enough to read by themselves and as a reading-bbok in schools for our little ones. The books employed in such schoolshave, too often, little interest, containing words rather than ideas. The conversations in the following chap ters, while extremely simple in themselves, open the way to more advanced thought, enabling the teacher to expand the ideas, according to his or her judgment. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over twenty years, thousands of children (and adults, too) were inspired by the Bible-based stories known as "Chapel Chats" that were shared by Pastor Jerald Borgie and his koala puppet, Jeremiah. Sixty-six of these "chats" along with fifteen illustrated graphics, drawn by artist, Brooke Plowman, are included in the book. "Pastor Borgie has a reputation for drawing you into his stories, and his anecdotes are famously popular with both young and old. For many decades, he has invited children to have a seat before him, then his twinkling eyes would take over and a bond was formed. I'm pleased he's taken this opportunity to share his favorites with a wider audience." Richard A. Swenson, MD, author of Margin Jerald Borgie was ordained a pastor in the Lutheran church forty-eight years ago and has served congregations in Cleveland, Ohio; Compton, California; and San Diego, California. He and his wife, Marcia, have been married for forty-five years, have two married sons, and five grandchildren.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shall I Be a Daily Communicant?: A Chat With Young People The later decree contains the words: They who have care of children should make every effort that, after their first Communion, these children approach the Holy Table often and even daily, if it is possible, as Jesus Christ and Mother Church desire. What seems implied in this passage, but that the Pope and the framers of the decree hoped to attain what lay so near their heart, the daily Communion of the young, mainly through the co-operation of priests, parents and teachers? And in fact it would seem quite evident, that the Pope's cherished desire in regard to the tenderest portion of his ock, can be fully brought home to them only through those who have immediate charge of them. 'our beliefs determine our characters; as a man thinketh in his heart, so is he. This fact was emphasized by the Holy Spirit when He whispered to the Apostle Paul this message for his son-in the-gospel, Timothy: - Take heed unto thyself and unto the doctrine; continue in them; for in so doing thou shalt both save thyself, and them that hear thee. Could it be that the church's politics are shaped by its habits and practices? Contending that we must recognize the formative power of the political forces around us, Kaitlyn Schiess urges the church to recover historic Christian practices that shape us according to the truth of the gospel.
