Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He had science and an Ivy League pedigree—why did he need God? Immersed in his physics studies at Cornell, Tom Rudelius never thought much about God until his brother, a new convert to Christianity, challenged him to explore faith. To placate his twin, he reluctantly began exploring the Bible and the life of Jesus. Seeking proof of God’s existence, he found himself in a world of uncertainty, faced with plenty of reasons for both faith and doubt. In Chasing Proof, Finding Faith, Tom, now a rising young theoretical physicist, traces his journey to unexpected faith, through subsequent doubt and anxiety, and ultimately to a firmer, life-transforming allegiance to Jesus. Along the way, he explores some of the issues he wrestled with, including Creation and cosmic origins The problem of evil and suffering The compatibility of miracles with science and the plausibility of Jesus’ resurrection The reliability of the Bible While Tom never found absolute proof of God or Christianity, he ultimately concluded that the existing evidence for both is compelling and compatible with science. His searingly honest story is a potent guide for those doubting or exploring faith.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does having faith mean abandoning reason? It's easy to get that impression. Still, it seems reasonable that a supremely intelligent God would want you to use your God-given intellect on your spiritual journey as much as in any other aspect of your life. Faith may not stand on rational thinking alone, but a solid faith should walk hand in hand with intellectual integrity. Does it really matter what I believe? What is the relationship between faith and knowledge? Why are there so many religions? Do all paths lead to the same God? This book helps you sort through the questions, objections, and concerns you can't help but raise. A Search for What Makes Sense will help you think your way clearly and honestly to answers that satisfy because they're your answers--conclusions you've arrived at personally without manipulation, coercion, or game-playing. For faith to exist and grow it's got to make sense--good sense, carefully-thought-out sense. And chances are it does. FINDING FAITH The Finding Faith books A Search for What Makes Sense and A Search for What Is Real don't try to tell you what to believe; they are guides in learning how to believe. If you think the spiritual journey requires turning your back on honesty and intellectual integrity, these two companion volumes will speak to both your mind and your soul.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been times when you've felt that if there isn't a God, there ought to be. Swept up in the mystery of the night sky, you've felt the closeness of its designer. Nature's extravagant diversity, unfolding in living color, has made you long to know the artist who dreamed it all up. Imagine what that might be like--to actually know God in a way that fills your heart and whispers tremendous value and purpose to something deep within you. But how can you experience a being you're not even sure exists? Religious jargon and games can't satisfy such a longing. It's got to be real . . . or nothing at all. A Search for What Is Real helps you sort through the questions, objections, and concerns that arise when you consider God not as some theological abstraction, but as someone you can actually connect with . . . and want to connect with, perhaps more than you know. FINDING FAITH The Finding Faith books, A Search for What Makes Sense and A Search for What Is Real, don't try to tell you what to believe; they are guides in learning how to believe. If you think the spiritual journey requires turning your back on honesty and intellectual integrity, these two companion volumes will speak to both your mind and your soul.

Book excerpt: This is a book about science, religion, and the world in between. I was born into a Christian family, but fell out of religion and in love with the scientific method. I had little need of faith, I thought, when science could tell me so much more about the world, and ask so little of me in return. But as I aged into young adulthood, a new chapter of my story began. Did I really know why I believed what I believed? How could I be so certain of my convictions when I hadn't even honestly considered the evidence? This book traces my journey through the furthest reaches of thought, a journey that took me through the realms of psychology, biology, physics, and belief. Could I find a place for faith in the modern world? Or was I right to cast it off as I did?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Americans say they are uncertain about their religious beliefs, although they continue to attend Christian and other churches. Interdenominational minister Willis presents this beautifully written book to help questioners maintain their integrity while relating to the vast Mystery that informs the universe beyond all understanding. "We know we don't know," Willis says, "and yet we all (even atheists) must stand on assumptions that help us lead good lives." To explore these assumptions, he discusses different ways of thinking about God, scientific and mythical views, the sources of good and evil, and the need for both freedom and commitment. He assures us we can all think reasonably about Ultimate Reality and find a faith that fits. The book grew from theology classes Willis taught in Unitarian churches and universities and from conversations with discontented members of other discussion groups. His clear and engaging prose is full of lively exchanges with his students. Frequent references to the best contemporary theologians (Bishop Spong, for example) and to philosophers, physicists, mythologists, and Bible experts provide an inspiring resource for those who long to resolve the conflict between faith and reason, doubt and belief.

Book excerpt: Is there a God? - What might God be like? - What is the relationship between faith and certainty? - Can intelligent people believe in spiritual realities? - Why are there so many religions? - Is it possible to experience a relationship with God--and if so, how? If you've asked questions like these, you're in good company. From songwriters such as Bob Dylan and Jewel Kilcher to TV shows such as The X Files and Touched by an Angel, the media and the arts reflect postmodern men and women's search for a living faith and a spiritually oriented life. Real faith isn't blind believism. It is a process that engages your intellect as well as your emotions. If you think faith requires turning your back on truth and intellectual honesty, then Finding Faith is one book you really ought to read. With logic, passion, and even-handedness that the thinking person will appreciate, this book helps you face your obstacles to faith by focusing not on what to believe, but on how to believe. Whether you want to strengthen the faith you have, renew the faith you lost, or discover faith for the first time, Finding Faith can coach, inspire, encourage, and guide you, and help you discover more in life than you'd ever imagined or hoped for.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do persons come to faith in our time? Are they active seekers or brought in by others? Is it a journey? Or is it a more sudden conversion? Are spouses, relatives, and friends most important to the process? Do clergy matter? What sorts of values, practices, and lifestyles tend to change for those who newly come to faith? What are the differences among the various religious traditions in how one comes to faith? This book presents the findings of a multi-year study on how people come to faith in the US context. It involves about 1,800 persons who recently made a new profession of faith or some other public commitment across various religious traditions in the US. An initial study was conducted twenty-five years ago on Christian populations in England by Bishop John Finney, but surprisingly little research has been done since then. Finding Faith Today is an expansion and follow-up of that study. The book sheds new light on how people come to faith and what sort of spiritual, practical, and social changes accompany that. The book will be a help to those seeking to open up their communities of faith to others with hospitality and integrity.

Book excerpt: As the media portrays it, modern Americans live their lives as though God were not part of the picture. Yet according to polls, two out of five Americans attend church weekly and even more profess belief in God. Sharon Gallagher turns her focus on those people who are moving in and out of church attendance, telling the stories of the people who in ways both expected and unexpected have come to faith and are willing to talk about their doubts and joys, and in doing so shows us how God continues to work in the lives of people today.

This book was released on 2015-12-13 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about a quest for faith. Faith seems to be something most people believe you either have or you don't-you don't search for it, hoping to find it. Yet, how can you have it automatically? Are you born with it, or have you been conditioned to believe that you have it. Maybe your parents started you in Sunday School at a very early age, and you were "confirmed" and graduated to church and perhaps adult Sunday School. Perhaps you have gone to church for a number of years, and you have heard the same propositions of the Christian faith uttered so many times that you think there is no other way to believe. Does God exist? This is the most basic of questions. Is there evidence of God's existence. Is it more than just wonder at the Universe and writings of the Bible? I look at some strong circumstantial evidence in this regard. Those who have faith presumably believe unquestionably not only in the divinity of Jesus, but also in the elements of dogma associated with him in the New Testament-the virgin birth, the bodily resurrection, Jesus' death as a ransom for our sins, the ascension, original sin, the Immaculate Conception, atonement, and redemption. Must one believe in all of these ideas in order to have faith? Or can you believe in some of them and not in others. And, what if you don't believe in any of them, but somehow acknowledge the divinity of Jesus? Can you count yourself as a believer, one who has faith? In this book I attempt to examine these elements of Christianity and to decide whether they make sense or not. And, if they don't make sense, what import this decision may have for Christian belief. Also, what about churches and organized religion? Is religion necessary to be spiritually at one with God? And do churches turn people away from Christianity because they may not follow Jesus' teaching to "love thy neighbor as thyself?" These questions and others are addressed in this book.

Book excerpt: Our sin nature is designed to talk us out of Gods promises. To separate ourselves from our sin nature and follow the path God laid out for our lives, we will need to rely on faith. Finding Faith will share the keys of faith we need to use to unlock all of Gods promises for our lives. Finding Faith is a guide to equip us with the knowledge and understanding of how God designed faith as a tool we can use to change the future of our lives. Faith is special to God, and it is the only currency we have to see His will done in our lives. When we find faith for Gods will to be done in our lives we will not be worried about our circumstances because we are so confident in God to take care of all our troubles. In Finding Faith, John Simmons uses scripture and his engaging testimony to lay out a foundation for understanding the concepts of faith. John also outlines practical application that we can use today to mature in our faith. Finding Faith will answer all the basic questions about faith, but goes onto explore how: Our level of faith is measured by how we see our future We will find joy in our lives when we find faith The faith we learn from our relationships will increase our faith in God To overcome adversity, doubt, and our past through faith To recognize if we are walking in faith God answers our faithful prayers and much more

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Too often, says Nigel Biggar, contemporary Christian ethics poses a false choice either conservative theological integrity or liberal secular consensus. Behaving in Public explains both why and how Christians should resist these polar options. Informed by a frankly Christian theological vision of moral life and so turning toward the world with openness and curiosity, Biggar s succinct argument charts a third way forward. Common sense is usually bland and boring. Nigel Biggar s book Behaving in Public, however, is full of common sense that is anything but bland and boring. That s because Biggar employs his common sense polemically to show what s deficient in one and another position on speaking as a Christian in public, and to point to alternatives. Over and over I found myself saying, Yes, of course; he s right. This is a wonderfully fresh, perceptive, and sensible discussion. Nicholas Wolterstorff Yale University How can the church witness effectively in public debates in modern, mostly secular societies, without either losing its integrity or imposing its perspectives on others? In this important new book Nigel Biggar maintains that the integrity of the Christian message should not be confused with distinctiveness. . . . Offers a nuanced yet demanding position on the public role of the church, cutting through unhelpful dichotomies and reminding us that theological seriousness need not be sectarian or intolerant. Jean Porter University of Notre Dame Clear in thought, elegant in expression, and generous in dialogue, this book offers a new and convincing approach to Christian ethics. . . . Biggar argues for the integrity of a mature, discriminating, nonmoralizing Christian ethics which is inspired and equipped for critical engagement with the church and the wider public and which cares about the flourishing of both. Werner G. Jeanrond University of Glasgow Behaving in Public shows people who care about public life how to combine theological integrity and political effectiveness. . . . This is a theology that offers an alternative to today s polarized politics. Robin W. Lovin Southern Methodist University
