Book excerpt: I've always dreamt of a world full of peace and love, with the desire to share that hope and speak it to the world. It started with a few words from a kind soul to unleash this hidden desire that desperately wanted to spread amongst the world. Love, kindness, and hope are meant to be shared, not hidden. They rebel when confined and torture the soul when their spark is not allowed to start a fire and spread a healing flame amongst broken hearts. Never underestimate the power of words. Have the courage to share a kind thought and always seek to catch that spark and share it with the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chasing the Wind covers a variety of ideas from Christianity, science, philosophy, ethics, and psychology. It starts with Socrates’s statement, “an unexamined life is not worth living” and asks how we might go about discovering what is a worthwhile life and what might motivate us to live such a life. It is a vast topic that is narrowed down to two principal areas: (1) a focus on relationships, which are central to providing fulfillment, worth, and purpose to our lives; and (2) an interaction with Christianity, which claims to have answers as to what is a worthwhile life. In summary, this book is a dialog between these two questions: What is a good life, and how does Christianity help or hinder such a life?

Book excerpt: When art connoisseur Alec Vanderbilt died, he left behind a centuries-old Bible that is a cherished family heirloom, a valuable collectors' piece, and a possible treasure trove of CIA intel from Alec's time with "the Company." So P.I. Jackson Douglas knows reclaiming it for Alec's daughter Abby won't be easy. But should it really be this hard? Complicating matters are a host of government agencies, fake federal agents, spies, ex-girlfriends, and Alec's son-each of whom wants the Bible for various reasons. However, nobody causes Jackson and Abby as much trouble as the mystery woman who joins the hunt with them. Pursuit of the Bible takes them from an opulent downtown L.A. hotel to an art gala on Santa Catalina Island, and from a game of cat-and-mouse aboard Amtrak's Coast Starlight to a snow-covered mountain hideaway. If Jackson is to procure the Bible for Abby, he'll need to stay one step ahead of the entire gang-not to mention stay alive long enough to figure out how to pull it off.

But when a political scandal threatens the life she clings to in Los Angeles, she has little choice but to pack up her rebellious, uncontrollable teenager and reluctantly return in order to escape the glare of the media and to keep her daughter from spilling to reporters. R. Martin • “Rothfuss has real talent.” —Terry Brooks OVER 1 MILLION COPIES SOLD! DAY ONE: THE NAME OF THE WIND My name is Kvothe. I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep. You may have heard of me. So begins a tale unequaled in fantasy literature—the story of a hero told in his own voice. It is a tale of sorrow, a tale of survival, a tale of one man’s search for meaning in his universe, and how that search, and the indomitable will that drove it, gave birth to a legend. Praise for The Kingkiller Chronicle: “The best epic fantasy I read last year.... He’s bloody good, this Rothfuss guy.” —George R. R. Martin, New York Times-bestselling author of A Song of Ice and Fire “Rothfuss has real talent, and his tale of Kvothe is deep and intricate and wondrous.” —Terry Brooks, New York Times-bestselling author of Shannara "It is a rare and great pleasure to find a fantasist writing...with true music in the words." —Ursula K. Book Synopsis True Tolerance by : Jay Budziszewski
Download or read book True Tolerance written by Jay Budziszewski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-24 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contemporary liberal thought, "tolerance" has come to be redefined as a synonym for ethical neutrality: refusal to judge among competing views of goods and evils. The result of this extreme relativism has been a foundations crisis in law, politics, education, and other areas of social life. In this lucidly written and brilliantly argued volume, J. Budziszewski attempts to reserve the self-destruction of modern liberalism by showing that true tolerance is not only consistent with taking stands about objective goods and evils, but actually requires doing so.Tolerance, falsely understood as ethical neutrality, has the paradoxical effect of crippling policy choice by divesting it of the moral and practical framework on which it depends. By painstakingly and exhaustively dissecting each of the many neutralist arguments, Budziszewski demonstrates that real neutrality is logically impossible. Confronted by alternative views, the neutralist at best obscures his own underlying judgments, and at worst abandons all possible defense against fanatics who oppose both true equality and true tolerance.True Tolerance is both a rigorous critique, and a polemic undertaken in the name of a positive, twenty-first century vision of liberalism. Budziszewsky outlines a view of true tolerance that assumes a relationship with an older liberal tradition and a codependence with other virtues, including humility, mercy, charity, respect, and courtesy. This vision is rooted in historical experience and rational conviction about what is good. In the spirit of liberal and classical theorists of virtue from Aristotle to John Locke to Alasdair MacIntyre, the virtue of true tolerance is much more than a readiness to follow known rules; it includes a developed ability to distinguish good rules from bad, and to choose rightly even where there are no rules or where rules seem to contradict each other. Accessibly written and intended for a wide readership, True Tolerance will be of special interest to political theorists and activists, and to sociologists and philosophers.
