Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Caribbean Development by : M. Bishop
Download or read book The Political Economy of Caribbean Development written by M. Bishop and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-09-12 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies of the global political economy have rarely engaged with development in the Caribbean, the thought of its indigenous intellectuals, or the non-sovereign territories of the region. Matthew Bishop compares the development of the independent English-speaking islands of St Lucia and St Vincent and their non-sovereign French neighbours, Martinique and Guadeloupe. By explaining how distinctive patterns of British and French colonialism and decolonisation came to bear on them, he investigates how very different patterns of development have subsequently ensued, often with startling consequences in this era of globalization and crisis. By engaging with the empirical reality of the Caribbean, his study sheds light on a range of wider debates relating to development, indigenous thought, post-colonial sovereignty, small states, and the contemporary evolution of the global political economy.
Book Synopsis Patterns of Caribbean Development by : Jay Mandle
Download or read book Patterns of Caribbean Development written by Jay Mandle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11-26 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1982, this study attempts to put contemporary Caribbean development into historical perspective. By first constructing a Marxist framework for the study of development , Jay Mandle assesses the reasons why the region emerged underdeveloped and evaluates post-world-war two efforts to overcome the legacy of poverty through a strategy of "industrialization through invitation." Identifying the reasons why a Marxist framework yielded results which were unsatisfactory, the author then explores the requirements which must be met for a more reliable study of the Caribbean’s economic development. Case studies of Cuba, Jamaica, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago examine the extent to which these requirements have been met.

Book Synopsis Caribbean Regional Integration by : Patsy Lewis
Download or read book Caribbean Regional Integration written by Patsy Lewis and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-05-29 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth analysis of the role of regional integration in the contemporary Caribbean, challenging the value of the neoliberal ideology that permeates regionalism discourse. The book asks what value neoliberal regionalism holds for the Caribbean, when its economic goals of efficiency and competitiveness serve to actively marginalize small states within the global community. Presenting an alternative framework for assessing success, the book investigates how the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) can confront new challenges and perform a more developmental function, centring economic transformation and a more democratic process. The book also explores long-standing challenges with implementing regional decisions at the national level and the absence of avenues for citizens to influence the direction of the integration movement. It explores these themes against the backdrop of the global pandemic and the climate crisis which underscore the fragility of Caribbean economies, their high levels of indebtedness, weak social security systems, and their marginality. Bringing together decades of research from one of the world’s foremost scholars on the subject, this book will be essential reading for researchers of the Caribbean specifically, and for those with an interest in regionalism more generally, across the fields of political economy, international relations, history, geography, economics, and global development.
Book Synopsis Introduction to the Pan-Caribbean by : Tracey Skelton
Download or read book Introduction to the Pan-Caribbean written by Tracey Skelton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-05-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With its diverse histories of slavery, plantations, colonialism and independence, the Caribbean is richly layered, highly complex and a wonderful example of people's resistance. The pan-Caribbean region also provides an excellent geography through which to understand and analyse the complex processes of globalisation, development, migration, tourism, and social and cultural relations. While the sea, sun and sand representation is a true one -some of the most beautiful places on earth are found in the Caribbean - the pan-Caribbean is much more intricate and fascinating than that. Where else in the world do French, Spanish, Dutch and English-speaking worlds co-exist alongside indigenous peoples and cultures? Where else have cultures of carnival, music and dance become so integrated into national and regional identities? The Caribbean is a crucible of diversity and semblance and a space that is both contradictory and harmonious. Introduction to the Pan-Caribbean has been written by people who are either from the region or have spent much of their working lives there. It is an excellent introduction and is your map through one of the most extraordinary and remarkable parts of the world.

Book Synopsis Crisis and Promise in the Caribbean by : Mr Winston Dookeran
Download or read book Crisis and Promise in the Caribbean written by Mr Winston Dookeran and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2015-08-28 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Caribbean is a complex, enigmatic region, characterised by great disparities in size, population, geography, history, language, religion, race and politics. This is a region in which harmony and discord work in tandem, trying to link economic logic with political logic. At the same time, this book is a comprehensive historical record especially highlighting hindrances to development in this region. This study raises two important issues: the ‘political imperative of convergence’ and the need for ‘appropriate correcting mechanisms’ that align the needs of the local with the regional. It is a volume that underlines the need for a change in strategy and makes proposals as to how to go about making those changes.
