Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charlotte Bronte and Her Circle Dear miss nussey, - We had not seen the article in Sharpe, and very possibly should not, if you had not directed our attention to it. We ordered a copy, and have now read the Few Words about Jane Eyre. The writer has certainly made many mistakes, but apparently not from any unkind motive, as he professes to be an admirer of Charlotte's works, pays a just tribute to her genius, and in common with thousands deplores her untimely death. His design seems rather to be to gratify the curiosity of the multitude in reference to one who had made such a sensation in the literary world. But even if the article had been of a less harmless character, we should not have felt inclined to take any notice of it, as by doing so we should have given it an importance which it would not other wise have obtained. Charlotte herself would have acted thus; and her character stands too high to be injured by the state ments in a magazine of small circulation and little influence statements which the writer prefaces with the remark that he does not vouch for their accuracy. The many laudatory notices of Charlotte and her works which appeared since her death may well make us indifferent to the detractions of a few envious or malignant persons, as there ever will be such. Book excerpt: NEW PRINT WITH PROFESSIONAL TYPE-SET IN CONTRAST TO SCANNED PRINTS OFFERED BY OTHERS Charlotte Brontë And Her Circle This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Works of Charlotte Bronte and Her Sisters: With Illustrationd From Photographs About five years ago, my two sisters and myself, after a some what prolonged period of separation, found ourselves reunited, and at home. Resident in a remote district, where education had made little progress, and where, consequently, there was no inducement to seek social intercourse beyond our own domestic circle, we were wholly dependent on ourselves and each other, on books and study. Book excerpt: Charlotte Bronte and Her Circle by Clement King Shorter In the whole of English biographical literature there is no book that can compare in widespread interest with the Life of Charlotte Brontë by Mrs. Gaskell. It has held a position of singular popularity for forty years; and while biography after biography has come and gone, it still commands a place side by side with Boswell's Johnson and Lockhart's Scott. As far as mere readers are concerned, it may indeed claim its hundreds as against the tens of intrinsically more important rivals. There are obvious reasons for this success. Mrs. Gaskell was herself a popular novelist, who commanded a very wide audience, and Cranford, at least, has taken a place among the classics of our literature. She brought to bear upon the biography of Charlotte Brontë all those literary gifts which had made the charm of her seven volumes of romance. And these gifts were employed upon a romance of real life, not less fascinating than anything which imagination could have furnished. Charlotte Brontë's success as an author turned the eyes of the world upon her. Thackeray had sent her his Vanity Fair before he knew her name or sex. The precious volume lies before me- We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Many of the books in our collection have been out of print for decades, and therefore have not been accessible to the general public. The aim of our publishing program is to facilitate rapid access to this vast reservoir of literature, and our view is that this is a significant literary work, which deserves to be brought back into print after many decades. The contents of the vast majority of titles in the Classic Library have been scanned from the original works. To ensure a high quality product, each title has been meticulously hand curated by our staff. Our philosophy has been guided by a desire to provide the reader with a book that is as close as possible to ownership of the original work. We hope that you will enjoy this wonderful classic work, and that for you it becomes an enriching experience.

Book excerpt: Embark on a journey of resilience, romance, and self-discovery with Charlotte Brontë's timeless classic, "Jane Eyre." Set against the moody and atmospheric backdrop of 19th-century England, this beloved novel follows the life of Jane Eyre, an orphaned girl who overcomes adversity to forge her own path in a world often harsh and unforgiving. From her bleak childhood under the care of her cruel aunt to her years at the austere Lowood School, Jane's spirit remains unbroken. As she matures into a strong and independent young woman, she takes a position as a governess at Thornfield Hall, where she meets the enigmatic and brooding master, Mr. Rochester. Despite the stark differences in their social status, a passionate and complex romance blossoms between them, testing Jane's convictions and resolve. "Jane Eyre" is more than just a romance-it's a profound exploration of themes such as morality, social criticism, and the struggle for personal integrity and equality. Brontë's rich, evocative prose and deeply psychological characterizations make this novel an enduring masterpiece that continues to captivate and inspire readers. Join Charlotte Brontë on an unforgettable journey through the trials and triumphs of "Jane Eyre." With its strong, relatable heroine, dramatic plot twists, and timeless exploration of love and identity, this classic novel remains a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit and the enduring quest for self-respect and emotional fulfillment.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charlotte Brontë and Her Sisters This book may seem at first sight only an untoward accident, due to the exigencies of including all well known names in a series entitled "Literary Lives." Mrs. Gaskell, it may be said, wrote the only Life of Charlotte Bronte that everyone should read. This is, in a measure, true, but much new material has been published since Mrs. Gaskell wrote, and this material has not in the interval been gathered together into one brief narrative. I have to thank Messrs. Hodder & Stoughton for any facts of that kind previously published in my Charlotte Bronte and Her Circle, and Messrs. Smith Elder & Co. for the same indulgence with regard to the Haworth Edition of Mrs. Gaskell's Life, to which I was privileged to add many notes. We are, and must be, one and all, burdened with faults in this world but the time will soon come when, I trust, we shall put them off in putting off our corruptible bodies, when debasement and sin will fall fr'om us with this cumbrous frame of flesh, and only the spark of the spirit will remain.
