But Colonel Johns had other plans. He had grown paranoid over the years and when the army reopened the investigation into the missing gold he knew that he would be the top suspect. Colonel Johns wanted this investigation to end so he sent his men to Butternut kill Charlie.In the end, they failed to located Charlie and the three men went berserk killing the Jingle family in a vain attempt to flush Charlie out but when that failed they were forced to flee not realizing how close they had come to completing their goal. Charlie had been critically wounded and lay dying only a few yards away covered in the brush.Charlie recovered from his wounds and driven by a desire for revenge that was fueled by his wife's dying touch and last words he traveled to Youngstown. It was there that he found his wife's killers and did to them what they had done to his loved ones. In his wife's words, it was retribution. With his mission completed Charlie returned to Butternut to live out the rest of his days but due to circumstances beyond his control he ended up buried in a neglected grave belonging to a derelict and was never reinterred next to his loving wife despite the promises that were made.Years later a hard-driven entrepreneur and notorious usurper named Maxwell Dunn arrived in Butternut and founded the Lucky Diamond Mine. There were no diamonds in the mine but what he found was more valuable than gold. A material called gypsum that poured its riches into Maxwell's pocket. But miserly Maxwell kept his miners poorly paid as they toiled and died in a mine that was anything but lucky.After Maxwell's death, the mine was sold to a corrupt corporation and the pour conditions in the mine continued as profit was the only driving force. In time, the mine was drained of its riches and closed leaving the town of Butternut to wither and die along with the remaining residents. The retched few who had no hope of escape.This was the town that Toby knew and grew up in. His life would be horribly rocked by the murder of his brother Ike at the hands of the Ryerson brothers who had killed him with a screwdriver for want of cigarette money. This pair of ne'er-do-wells were the nephews of Judge Les Dunn the great grandson of Maxwell.Judge Dunn returned to Butternut with ideas of reclaiming his families past glory. Nothing would stand in his way not even his nephew's and certainly not Toby. So, he used his influence to keep his nephews out of jail. He couldn't afford attention being brought to his dealings as he made a grab for Butternut.The Ryerson boys were freed, and Toby's life was placed in danger. Put at risk and having no chance to prevail against grown men Toby decides to find the one man who has the skill to deal with this devious scum. He searched for Charlie only to find him buried in the church cemetery in a neglected corner under a crooked headstone.What was Toby to do now? This and other questions are answered as Toby makes his way through a chaotic maze. Like "Mouse Trap" the shoe kicks the bucket and the ball rolls down the stairs, so Toby must follow the path laid out before him. He is now walled in a rat in a wheel and events must play out until game over.
