Book Synopsis Charlestown [Massachusetts] Land Records, 1638-1802 by : Rec Comm of the City of Boston
Download or read book Charlestown [Massachusetts] Land Records, 1638-1802 written by Rec Comm of the City of Boston and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charlestown is one of the oldest towns in Massachusetts and at one time contained in part or whole the towns of Woburn, Burlington, Stoneham, Malden, Somerville, Reading, Medford, Cambridge and West Cambridge. Under penalty of law, all land transactions conducted between citizens of Charlestown had to be officially registered in the "Towne Booke," later contained in the Charlestown Book of Possessions. Responding to public concern over the deterioration of these folios and the possible loss of this valuable historical resource, the Record Commissioners of the City of Boston began a project to transcribe and reorganize the Book of Possessions and other early Massachusetts records. This volume makes available the second revised edition of the report on public land records of Charlestown as published by the Record Commissioners in 1883. Some 300 entries describing land holdings, transactions and disputes appear as in the original folios, with a short introduction and preforatory note from the Commissioners detailing the organization and production of the report. All extraneous material not related to Charlestown lands has been excised and an extensive index of full names, estates, and pertinent subject matter has been appended. An excellent addition to any genealogical research collection.
Book Synopsis BIOGRAPHY of NICHOLAS DAVIS (d. 1672, RI): WITH NEW DISCOVERIES & ENDNOTES [3rd, Updated Edition] by : Dr. Frank "Mike" Davis
Download or read book BIOGRAPHY of NICHOLAS DAVIS (d. 1672, RI): WITH NEW DISCOVERIES & ENDNOTES [3rd, Updated Edition] written by Dr. Frank "Mike" Davis and published by RootsQuest Press, LLC. This book was released on 2022-02-04 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research paper is to provide a comprehensive biography about the author’s 8th great-grandfather, Nicholas Davis, which includes “new research discoveries” about his life in America, and about his wife, Sarah (Ewer) Blossom Davis. Quaker Nicholas Davis, sometimes of Barnstable, Massachusetts and sometimes of Newport, Rhode Island is an interesting and notable American historical figure for several reasons: As the first Barnstable, Plymouth Colony resident to adopt the Quaker faith in 1659 CE, Nicholas “survived” severe persecutions legislated by both Plymouth Colony and Massachusetts Bay Colony governments. He was imprisoned twice with other Quakers who were later hanged to death in Boston because of their faith. Despite these hardships, and the tragic, sudden death of his 2-year-old-son, Nicholas was able to “thrive” in New England. According to Quakerism’s founder, George Fox, Davis had a “great family” comprised of his wife, Sarah, and six children. Nicholas Davis served as a “role model” for his neighbors, showing them how to treat the local “Wampanoag” Native Americans with utmost respect. In 1660 CE, the Wampanoag “Chief” John Yanno “gifted” Nicholas a valuable parcel of land that later became “Hyannis”, Massachusetts; and From 1643 CE until his death in 1672 CE, Nicholas was an international “merchant mariner” who traded goods with people, some of differing nationalities, throughout America and England. In an era filled with unscrupulous businessmen, Nicholas Davis maintained his good reputation by “dealing honestly” with all persons, and for donating some of his time and money “for the public interest”.
Book Synopsis Early New England by : David A. Weir
Download or read book Early New England written by David A. Weir and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 2005 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of covenant was at the heart of early New England society. In this singular book David Weir explores the origins and development of covenant thought in America by analyzing the town and church documents written and signed by seventeenth-century New Englanders. Unmatched in the breadth of its scope, this study takes into account all of the surviving covenants in all of the New England colonies. Weir's comprehensive survey of seventeenth-century covenants leads to a more complex picture of early New England than what emerges from looking at only a few famous civil covenants like the Mayflower Compact. His work shows covenant theology being transformed into a covenantal vision for society but also reveals the stress and strains on church-state relationships that eventually led to more secularized colonial governments in eighteenth-century New England. He concludes that New England colonial society was much more "English" and much less "American" than has often been thought, and that the New England colonies substantially mirrored religious and social change in Old England.

Thousands of his direct descendants currently live in America. The author has spent 25 years researching historical documents in England to shed new light on Dolor's life before he immigrated to New England. The author's research results both corrects and updates all previous books and genealogies previously written about Dolor and his wife, Margery (Willard) Davis, including the first accurately published vital statistics for their four "English-born" children, and their residences within Sussex County, England. Nicholas Davis, international merchant mariner, is the author's 8th-great grandfather who lived near his relative, Dolor Davis, in Barnstable, Massachusetts from 1643 CE to 1670 CE. The bulk of this ebook covers the fascinating lives of Nicholas Davis, his family, and many of his descendants. The reader will discover how "Quaker" Nicholas Davis positively impacted the formation of New England's Colonies through his honest trading relationships, his deep friendship with the native Wampanoag people, and by his philanthropy. Included in this ebook are very interesting stories and first hand accounts of Nicholas Davis' descendants who were abducted by pirates, and who survived perilous seafaring journeys to South America, among other narratives.
Book Synopsis The Notorious Elizabeth Tuttle by : Ava Chamberlain
Download or read book The Notorious Elizabeth Tuttle written by Ava Chamberlain and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2012-10-31 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who was Elizabeth Tuttle? In most histories, she is a footnote, a blip. At best, she is a minor villain in the story of Jonathan Edwards, perhaps the greatest American theologian of the colonial era. Many historians consider Jonathan Edwards a theological genius, wildly ahead of his time, a Puritan hero. Elizabeth Tuttle was Edwards’s “crazy grandmother,” the one whose madness and adultery drove his despairing grandfather to divorce. In this compelling and meticulously researched work of micro-history, Ava Chamberlain unearths a fuller history of Elizabeth Tuttle. It is a violent and tragic story in which anxious patriarchs struggle to govern their households, unruly women disobey their husbands, mental illness tears families apart, and loved ones die sudden deaths. Through the lens of Elizabeth Tuttle, Chamberlain re-examines the common narrative of Jonathan Edwards’s ancestry, giving his long-ignored paternal grandmother a voice. Tracing this story into the 19th century, she creates a new way of looking at both ordinary families of colonial New England and how Jonathan Edwards’s family has been remembered by his descendants, contemporary historians, and, significantly, eugenicists. For as Chamberlain uncovers, it was during the eugenics movement, which employed the Edwards family as an ideal, that the crazy grandmother story took shape. The Notorious Elizabeth Tuttle not only brings to light the tragic story of an ordinary woman living in early New England, it also explores the deeper tension between the ideal of Puritan family life and its messy reality, complicating the way America has thought about its Puritan past.
