Download or read book An Island Garden written by Celia Thaxter and published by Applewood Books. This book was released on 2008-11 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celia Laighton Thaxter (1835-1894) was born in Portsmouth, NH. When she was four, her father became the lighthouse keeper on White Island in the Isles of Shoals. After resigning his post eight years later, he built a resort hotel on Appledore Island in Maine. The first of its kind on the New England coast, the hotel became a gathering place for writers and artists during the latter half of the 19th century. In her last year of life, Celia published this work, in which she lovingly describes her Appledore garden and its flowers. The flowers she grew in her cutting garden filled her own rooms and those of the hotel, and this work became famous for its descriptions of the old-fashioned flowers she grew there. Her island garden, a plot that measured 15 feet square, has been re-created and is open to visitors.

Download or read book Noir written by Lee Hendrix and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2016-02-09 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Due to the technological advances of the nineteenth century, an abundance of black drawing media exploded onto the market. Charcoal, conte crayon, and fabricated black chalks and crayons; fixatives; various papers; and many lifting devices gave rise to an unprecedented amount of experimentation. Indeed, innovation became the rule, as artists developed their own unique—and often experimental—processes. The exploration of black media in drawing is inextricably bound up with the exploration of black in prints, and this volume presents an integrated study that rises above specialization in one over the other. Noir brings together such diverse artists as Francisco de Goya, Maxime Lalanne, Gustave Courbet, Odilon Redon, and Georges Seurat and explores their inventive works on paper. Sidelining labels like “conservative” or “avant-garde,” the essays in this book employ all the tools that art history and modern conservation have given us, inviting the reader to look more broadly at the artists’ methods and materials. This volume accompanies an eponymous exhibition on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum from February 9 to May 15, 2016.

Book excerpt: In this pioneering study, the first substantial reassessment of the artist and his paintings to be written since 1901, Ruth Wood covers his personal and artistic life over a long career of more than seventy years. Working within the tradition of British landscape painting and influenced by his lifelong admiration of John Constable, Leader's extensive coverage of the British countryside and coastal scenes reveals the development of a distinctive and independent style. A master at exploiting the natural effects of water and light, the countryside after rain or the amber luminosity of the late afternoon sun, and these were features of his work which became his trademarks. Ruth Wood uncovers much hitherto unused material and corrects many errors and misconceptions about B.W. Leader and his work. Important sources include the artist's diaries, records of paintings sold, his letters, British and overseas exhibition catalogues, reviews and other archive material. Extensive and representative colour plat
