Associated production is expected to be the major source of strange particles in charged-current neutrino interactions. sigma-neutral and xi-minus production by neutrinos was observed. The dependence on various leptonic and hadronic variables is investigated. A fit to single and associated production of s, s/anti-s, and c quarks is described based on the number of single and double strange particle production events. Inclusive neutral strange particle decays (V°) production rates as a fraction of all charged-current events are measured and are tabulated. The lambda/K ratio is found to be 0.39 +- 0.04 and the fraction of lambda coming from sigma-neutral is (16 +- 5)%. The single- and double V° production was used to determine the associated s anti-s production rate and single s-quark production rate. 13 refs., 7 figs., 3 tabs. (LEW).

Book excerpt: A scan for directly produced positrons in 5,000 neutrino interactions in the neon (21 percent) hydrogen filled bubble chamber at Fermilab has yielded 15 events, 9 of which have ..mu..−'s identified in the external muon identifier. On correcting for detection efficiency one obtains sigma(e..mu..−)/sigma(..mu..−) approximately 1 x 10−2 for E/sub e/> .8 GeV and E/sub ..nu../> 5 GeV. The kaon multiplicity is unexpectedly high. Eleven of the events have one or more Vees and three have two or more. Among the 11 events are two clear ..lambda..'s and two ambiguous K°/..lambda ... There are four events with identifiable charged kaons. A 16th e+ event (9) is a definite ..nu../sub e/. From this information one concludes that the kaon multiplicity is 2 +- 6 K°'s and 2 +- 1 K/sup + -/'s per interaction. From the observation / = 6.6, one concludes that the e+'s are probably not uniquely from heavy lepton decay. From a variety of analyses involving the e+ and/or K°'s one learns that the mass of the hadron (C) that produces the e+'s is greater than 1.6 GeV. By determining the fraction of normal charged current (CC) events that have K°/sub s/ ..-->.. ..pi..+..pi..− one is able to compare this fraction with the fraction of CC events that have e+..mu..− (K°/sub s/ ..-->.. ..pi..+..pi..−) to establish a conservative lower limit to the semileptonic branching ratio, C ..-->.. (e/sup +/ and ..mu../sup +/) ..nu../C ..-->.. all> 0.33 (1 +- 42), provided that the same number of K°/sub s/ exists in thenonleptonic decays as in the semileptonic ones, and that the phase space for ..mu../sup +/ and e/sup +/ are nearly equal. There is no compelling evidence for an energy threshold and there is a hint of some neutral current events among the e/sup +/ events.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charged kaon production by atmospheric neutrinos is a background in searches for the proton decay $p \rightarrow K^{+} \bar{\nu}$. This channel is well motivated theoretically, and is favored by Supersymmetric Grand Unified Theories. Measurements of neutrino-induced $K^{+}$ production are important inputs for current and future proton decay searches at Super-K, Hyper-K and DUNE. The MINERvA neutrino-nucleus cross section experiment at Fermilab uses timing information to reconstruct $K^{+}$ decay-at-rest events. Differential cross section measurements are presented for both charged- and neutral-current neutrino interactions on plastic scintillator (CH). The cross section in $K^{+}$ kinetic energy, $d\sigma/dT_K$, is observed to be relatively flat between 0 and 500 MeV for both charged- and neutral-current scattering. Its shape is in good agreement with the prediction by the GENIE neutrino event generator when final-state interactions are included. A measurement of the hadronic visible energy in neutral-current $K^{+}$ events is also presented, as proton decay backgrounds come from events with very low visible energy. The spectrum is observed to be slightly softer in data than in \genie. A search for charged-current coherent $K^{+}$ production, $\nu_{\mu}A\rightarrow\mu^{-}K^{+}A$, is also presented. This rare process brings a $K^{+}$ on shell and leaves the target nucleus in its ground state. We find the first experimental evidence for the process at $3\sigma$ significance.
