Book excerpt: Results are presented for the ground-state energies of a two-dimensional charge-density-wave state in a strong uniform magnetic field. The effects of exchange and correlation are included within the local-density approximation to the density-functional theory. Comparison with other theoretical calculations indicates that there is an explicit magnetic field dependence of the correlation energy due to electron localization. (Author).

Book excerpt: This volume represents the Proceedings of the Oji International Seminar on the Application of High Magnetic Fields in the Physics of Semiconductors and Magnetic Materials, which was held at the Hakone Kanko Hotel, Hakone, Japan, from 10 to 13 September 1980. The Seminar was organized as a related meeting to the 15th International Conference on the Physics of Semiconductors which was held in Kyoto between 1 and 5 September 1980. From 12 countries, 77 de legates participated in the Seminar. This Seminar was originally planned to be a formal series of International Conferences on the Application of High Magnetic Fields in the Physics of Semiconductors, which was first started by Professor G. Landwehr in 1972 in WUrzburg as a satellite conference to the 11th Semiconductor Conference in Warsaw. The Conference in WUrzburg was con ducted in an informal atmosphere which was followed by three conferences, in WUrzburg in 1974 and 1976, and in Oxford in 1978. At the current Seminar the physics of magnetic materials was added to the scope of the Seminar, because high-field magnetism is also an important research area in the physics of high magnetic fields and is also one of the most active fields in physics in Japan. In the last decade, considerable effort has been devoted to develop the techniques for generating the high magnetic fields in many high-field labora tories in the world.

Book excerpt: Studies of the collective excitation of two spatially separated electron and hole layers in strong magnetic fields indicate that the system undergoes a phase transition when the layer separation is larger than a critical value. Using the Hartree-Fock approximation, we find that this transition generates a novel excitonic density wave state, which has a lower energy than either a homogenous exciton fluid or a double charge-density wave state. The order parameters of the state satisfy a sum rule similar to that of a charge- density wave state in a two-dimensional electron system. A possible connection between the new state and a recent experimental result is discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was first published in 2007. When electrons are confined to two dimensions, cooled to near absolute zero temperature, and subjected to a strong magnetic field, they form an exotic new collective state of matter. Investigations into this began with the observations of integral and fractional quantum Hall effects, which are among the most important discoveries in condensed matter physics. The fractional quantum Hall effect and a stream of other unexpected findings are explained by a new class of particles: composite fermions. This textbook is a self-contained, pedagogical introduction to the physics and experimental manifestations of composite fermions. Ideal for graduate students and academic researchers, it contains numerous exercises to reinforce the concepts presented. The topics covered include the integral and fractional quantum Hall effects, the composite-fermion Fermi sea, various kinds of excitations, the role of spin, edge state transport, electron solid, bilayer physics, fractional braiding statistics and fractional local charge.

Book excerpt: This volume contains contributions presented at the 12th International Conference on High Magnetic Fields in Semiconductor Physics. In order to give an overview, 37 lecturers not only reviewed the latest results in their field, but also gave a general introduction. The rapid development of semiconductor physics and technology during the last few years has resulted in an extensive application of high magnetic fields in both fundamental and applied research; more than 160 contributed papers were presented as posters.Sixteen years after its discovery, the quantum Hall effect (QHE) is still a subject of high activity. Many new results on the fractional QHE were presented; in addition to 6 invited papers, there were 43 contributions. Another field of high activity is magneto-optics, and 49 posters were presented. Magnetotransport also turned out to be of high interest, and magnetic semiconductors played a prominent role at the conference, too.Without doubt, the availability of superconducting magnets in most laboratories contributed to the growth of semiconductor physics in high magnetic fields. Because not all experiments can be performed in fields up to 10 or 15 teslas, high magnetic field laboratories offering larger fields are indispensable. There were reports from four laboratories on present work going on at these installations.

Book excerpt: Epitaxial growth and electronic properties of semiconductor thin films are becoming increasingly important for fundamental and applied research and for device applications. This book contains a comprehensive collection of over 1500 references covering the first 25 years of molecular beam epitaxy of III-V compound semiconductors. Molecular beam epitaxy is a versatile thin film growth technique which emerged from the 'Three-temperature method' de veloped in the 1950s and from surface kinetic studies performed in the 1960s. III-V semiconductors such as GaAs, AlAs, (Galn)As, InP, etc., play an important role in the application to optoelectronic and high-speed devices. Over the past three years the technology of molecular beam epitaxy has spread rapidly to most major research and development laboratories through out the world, and an increasing number of highly refined III-V semiconduc tor structures with exactly tailored electronic properties have been pro duced and explored for fundamental studies as well as for device appl ica tion. The comprehensive bibliography on this dramatically expanding topic helps chemists, engineers, materials scientists, and physicists working in semiconductor research and development areas to sort out the important lit erature of their particular interest. A direct reproduction of the output of a computer printer has been used to enable rapid publication and to keep printing costs low. Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Interfaces, Quantum Wells and Superlattices" was held from August 16th to 29th, 1987, in Banff, Alberta, Canada. This volume contains most of the lectures that were given at the Institute. A few of the lectures had already been presented at an earlier meeting and appear instead in the proceedings of the NATO Advanced Study Institute on "Physics and Applications of Quantum Wells and Super lattices" held in Erice from April 21st to May 1st earlier in the year and published by Plenum Press. The study of semiconductor interfaces, quantum wells and super lattices has come to represent a substantial proportion of all work in condensed matter physics. In a sense the growth of interest in this area, which began to accelerate about 10 years ago and seems to be continuing, has been driven by technological developments. While the older generation of semiconductor devices was based on adjacent semiconductors with different properties (e. g. different doping levels) separated by interfaces, modern semiconductor devices tend to be based more and more on properties of the interfaces themselves. This has led, as an example, to the field of band-structure engineering. Improved understanding of the fundamental physics of these systems has aided technological developments and, in turn, technological developments have made available systems which exhibit novel and fascinating phYSical properties, such as the integer and fractional quantum Hall effects.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents the discovery of a surprising phase transition between a topological and a broken symmetry phase. Phase transitions between broken symmetry phases involve a change in symmetry and those between topological phases require a change in topological order; in rare cases, however, transitions may occur between these two broad classes of phases in which the vanishing of the topological order is accompanied by the emergence of a broken symmetry. This thesis describes observations of such a special phase transition in the two-dimensional electron gas confined in the GaAs/AlGaAs structures. When tuned by hydrostatic pressure, the ν = 5/2 and ν = 7/2 fractional quantum Hall states, believed to be prototypical non-Abelian topological phases of the Pfaffian universality class, give way to an electronic nematic phase. Remarkably, the fractional quantum Hall states involved are due to pairing of emergent particles called composite fermions. The findings reported here, therefore, provide an interesting example of competition of pairing and nematicity. This thesis provides an introduction to quantum Hall physics of the two-dimensional electron gas, contains details of the high pressure experiments, and offers a discussion of the ramifications and of the origins of the newly reported phase transition.

Book excerpt: This is the second volume of a comprehensive two-volume treatise on superconductivity that represents the first such publication since the earlier widely acclaimed books by R. Parks. It systematically reviews the basic physics and recent advances in the field. Leading researchers describe the state of the art in conventional phonon-induced superconductivity, high-Tc superconductivity, and in novel superconductivity, including triplet pairing in the ruthenates. The second volume is largely concerned with novel superconductors, such as heavy-fermion metals and organic materials, and also includes granular superconductors. Important new results on current problems are presented in a manner designed to stimulate further research. Numerous illustrations, diagrams and tables make this book especially useful as a reference work for students, teachers and researchers. Volume 1 treats Conventional and High-Tc Superconductors (3-540-43883-1).

Book excerpt: The book presents a comprehensive yet concise introduction to the physics of two-dimensional electron systems in the quantum Hall regime, as well as an up-to-date overview of the current fields of research concerning the integer and fractional quantum Hall effect. The physics of two-dimensional electron systems at low temperatures and high magnetic fields are governed by the formation of discrete energy levels referred to as Landau levels. These narrow energy bands not only form the basis of the well-known quantum Hall effect but also promote strong interactions between the electrons, giving rise to some of the finest manifestations of many-body physics in solid state science. Examples include skyrmionic spin textures, ferromagnetic spin transitions, stripe and bubble phases, as well as fractional quantum Hall states with potential non-abelian exchange statistics. The thesis succeeds in profoundly deepening our understanding of these exotic states of matter, with a main focus on the density-modulated phases in the quantum Hall regime. These phases arise from the interplay of competing interactions and are characterized by a self-organized ordering of electrons in spatial patterns. Similar phases of matter are currently being studied in other material systems as well, most notably in high-temperature superconductors. The thesis stands out not only in terms of its contribution to improving readers’ grasp of physics, but also in the diversity and novelty of the measurement techniques employed, which take advantage of the interaction between the electrons and the surrounding crystal lattice.
