Book excerpt: This research aims at enhancing the fundamental understanding of mechanisms controlling the deformation and fracture of silicon carbide based ceramics (single- and poly-crystal). The role of microstructure and material properties on the energy absorption capability of SiC is studied. This research helps to improve the ability to quantitatively predict the initiation and propagation of fracture and the interaction between fracture and plasticity, which provides a step towards a mechanistic understanding of deformation and failure properties of ceramic single crystals and polycrystals. The validity of the indentation-cracking method for toughness measurement is examined using nanoindentation tests with different indenters (spherical, pyramidal). Pyramidal indenters with various centerline to face angles are used to produce a wide range of effective strains in the single and polycrystalline SiC. Crystal plasticity constitutive laws can be calibrated using below threshold indentation loads. Above threshold loads are used to construct a parametric map that delineates the dependence of the ratio of crack size and contact radius on indenter geometry, applied load, toughness, and hardness, thus providing important guidelines for the toughness measurement method. By examining the behavior of several SiC materials during nanoindentation experiments using spherical and pyramidal indenters, it is possible to make predictions about methods to improve the ductility and fracture toughness of SiC to optimize its energy absorption. The applicability of the area under the irreversible part of the indentation load displacement curve (energy dissipated during loading) to predict the performance of SiC under contact loading is examined.

Book excerpt: The recent emergence and proliferation of proximal probes, e.g. SPM and AFM, and computational techniques for simulating tip-surface interactions has enabled the systematic investigation of interfacial problems on ever smaller scales, as well as created means for modifying and manipulating nanostructures. In short, they have led to the appearance of the new, interdisciplinary fields of micro/nanotribology and micro/nanomechanics. This volume serves as a timely, practical introduction to the principles of nanotribology and nanomechanics and applications to magnetic storage systems and MEMS/NEMS. Assuming some familiarity with macrotribology/mechanics, the book comprises chapters by internationally recognized experts, who integrate knowledge of the field from the mechanics and materials-science perspectives. They cover key measurement techniques, their applications, and theoretical modelling of interfaces, each beginning their contributions with macro- and progressing to microconcepts. After reviewing the fundamental experimental and theoretical aspects in the first part, Nanotribology and Nanomechanics then treats applications. Three groups of readers are likely to find this text valuable: graduate students, research workers, and practicing engineers. It can serve as the basis for a comprehensive, one- or two-semester course in scanning probe microscopy; applied scanning probe techniques; or nanotribology/nanomechanics/nanotechnology, in departments such as mechanical engineering, materials science, and applied physics. With a Foreword by Physics Nobel Laureate Gerd Binnig Dr. Bharat Bhushan is an Ohio Eminent Scholar and The Howard D. Winbigler Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Graduate Research Faculty Advisor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, and the Director of the Nanotribology Laboratory for Information Storage & MEMS/NEMS (NLIM) at the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio. Book excerpt: Mechanical properties of high-purity polycrystalline cubic SiC was characterized after neutron irradiation. Bar samples were irradiated in target position capsules in the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR, Oak Ridge, Tennessee) to nominal fluence levels up to 7.7 dpa at temperatures of 300, 500, and 800°C. A decrease in Young's modulus was observed after irradiation, and its irradiation temperature dependence qualitatively agreed with the calculated modulus change due to point defect swelling. Irradiation caused a significant modification of statistical flexural strength but caused only minor increase in nano-indentation hardness. The irradiation effect on fracture initiation through an enhanced cleavage resistance likely is primarily responsible for the major change in flexural strength properties.

Book excerpt: In summary, a general method of nanoscale tensile specimen preparation utilizing FIB/FE-SEM and a homebuilt universal in-situ tensile testing platform were developed for the mechanical characterization of SiC, SiC/Si interface, MWCNTs/polymers and individual MWCNTs. The SiC/Si interfacial strength and MWCNTs/PEEK nano-mechanics were characterized with nanoscale specimens for the first time. The tensile strengths of both a-SiC and MWCNT/PEEK composites exhibited similar phenomenon of size dependency, with a trend of strength increase when the specimen dimension reduces to the nanoscale. The fracture during tensile testing appeared to start at the surface of the specimens for both of the monolithic a-SiC and the MWCNTs/PEEK composite. The SiC/Si interface failed cohesively in the a-Si region of the interface, while the sword-in-sheath failure mechanism was found to dominate the MWCNTs/NBR fracture.

Book excerpt: "Thin films of metals and ceramics are commonly used as the structural materials for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). These systems are used for a wide range of applications that include sensors, displays, and portable power generators. Accurate measurement of the mechanical properties of these thin films is essential for the robust design of high-performance and reliable MEMS. In this thesis, the method of nanoindentation is used to characterize the elastic properties of thin films of Hexoloy-SG silicon carbide. This material is of particular interest for MEMS operating in harsh, hightemperature environments. Nanoindentation was performed using a commercial Hysitron TriboIndenter℗ʼ equipped with a diamond Berkovich nanoindenter tip. During each nanoindentation test, the indenter was forced into the specimen by a calibrated load, while the indentation depth was recorded continuously with nanometer resolution. The first part of this thesis describes a detailed protocol for nanoindentation testing using the TriboIndenter℗ʼ and discusses the calibration of the instrument using a quartz standard. The identification of errors due to drift, vibrations, and surface inhomogeneities is described in detail. This protocol was then used to test a 2.1 ℗æm thick film of Hexoloy-SG silicon carbide film deposited on a 500 ℗æm thick single-crystal silicon substrate. The film was tested with loads varying from 1,000 ℗æN to 13,000 ℗æN, such that the maximum indentation was always less than 10% of the film thickness. The nanoindentation load-displacement curves from a total of 155 individual indents were analyzed using three different methods to extract the value of the Young's modulus of the Hexoloy film. The first method, developed by Oliver and Pharr, is widely used in nanoindentation analysis, but does not account explicitly for the effects of the underlying substrate. It is valid strictly for monolithic materials. Therefore, refinements of the Oliver-Pharr method by King a" --

This book was released on 2011 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ceramic materials have traditionally been chosen for armor applications for their superior mechanical properties and low densities. At high strain rates seen during ballistic events, the behavior of these materials relies upon the total volumetric flaw concentration more so than any single anomalous flaw. In this context flaws can be defined as any microstructural feature which detriments the performance of the material, potentially including secondary phases, pores, or unreacted sintering additives. Predicting the performance of armor grade ceramic materials depends on knowledge of the absolute and relative concentration and size distribution of bulk heterogeneities. Ultrasound was chosen as a nondestructive technique for characterizing the microstructure of dense silicon carbide ceramics. Acoustic waves interact elastically with grains and inclusions in large sample volumes, and were well suited to determine concentration and size distribution variations for solid inclusions. Methodology was developed for rapid acquisition and analysis of attenuation coefficient spectra. Measurements were conducted at individual points and over large sample areas using a novel technique entitled scanning acoustic spectroscopy. Loss spectra were split into absorption and scattering dominant frequency regimes to simplify analysis. The primary absorption mechanism in polycrystalline silicon carbide was identified as thermoelastic in nature. Correlations between microstructural conditions and parameters within the absorption equation were established through study of commercial and custom engineered SiC materials. Nonlinear least squares regression analysis was used to estimate the size distributions of boron carbide and carbon inclusions within commercial SiC materials. This technique was shown to additionally be capable of approximating grain size distributions in engineered SiC materials which did not contain solid inclusions. Comparisons to results from electron microscopy exhibited favorable agreement between predicted and observed distributions. Developed techniques were applied to large sample areas using scanning acoustic spectroscopy to map variations in the size distribution and concentration of grains and solid inclusions within the bulk microstructure. The experiments performed in this thesis form the foundation of a novel characterization technique capable of mapping variations in sample composition which could be extended to a wide range of dense polycrystalline heterogeneous materials.

Book excerpt: Nanoindentation is a widely used state of the art facility to precisely and conveniently evaluate the mechanical properties of a wide group of materials. Along with the determination of elastic modulus and hardness of materials, this chapter particularly aims to explore the possibilities to assess the corresponding stress,Äìstrain characteristics of elastic,Äìplastic materials and most importantly unique pseudoelastic materials. The suitability of continuous stiffness measurement (CSM) based nanoindenter systems along with the adaptability of the instrument without CSM for precisely evaluating the deformation behavior of specialized materials is discussed in details. In this regard, the roll of indenter tip geometry and size is greatly emphasized. The recent research in the field is reviewed thoroughly and the updated protocol generated is illustrated.

Equipment was designed to deform the crystals in bending by three-point loading. Preliminary results for Young's modulus of elasticity and crossbending strength are reported. Values of strength as high as one million psi were obtained. A correlation was found between sample thickness and strength. The strength at 1750 C considerably exceeds the strength at room temperature. No evidence of gross pl stic deformation under mechanical load was found as high as 1800 C. Some observations were made of dislocation motion during etching at 900 C in borax. (Author).
