Book excerpt: Bright sources of highly indistinguishable single photons are desirable for diverse applications in quantum technology, including quantum cryptographic protocols, information processing, and metrology. The most common single photon source for quantum optical experiments is currently spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC); quantum dot sources have the potential to greatly exceed the brightness of these current sources, without compromising the quality of the emitted photons. Embedding a quantum dot within a tapered nanowire waveguide greatly increases the photon extraction efficiency. Exciting a two-photon resonant transition decreases the emission time jitter, improving both the multi-photon suppression and indistinguishability. Before this work, these two techniques have not yet been implemented together. We implemented two-photon resonant excitation (TPRE) for the first time in nanowire-embedded quantum dots; we found that it significantly improved the multi-photon suppression. However, we were unable to measure the indistinguishability due to low counts and instabilities in the experimental apparatus. Nevertheless, we have identified the significant improvements that are still required in order to successfully measure the indistinguishability under TPRE; with these improvements, the measurement should be possible for future group members. We successfully measured the indistinguishability under a quasi-resonant excitation, but did not find a significant difference when comparing to the measurement made on a similar quantum dot under above-bandgap excitation. We must also substantially improve the single photon count rate in order to approach the polarization entanglement rates of SPDC sources. Despite these challenges, nanowire-embedded quantum dots remain a promising source of both single and entangled pairs of photons.

Book excerpt: Nanometer-sized semiconductor crystals, termed 'quantum dots', are of fundamental interest because of their size-tunable properties. Three-dimensional quantum confinement of charge carriers by the small crystal size results in discrete atomic-like electronic states. This dissertation describes the synthesis and in-depth characterization of lead chalcogenide colloidal quantum dots for forthcoming applications as near-infrared single photon emitters. An efficient single photon source that operates at telecommunication wavelengths (between 1.3 and 1.6?m) is a basic requirement for many photonic quantum technologies, such as quantum computing and quantum cryptography. Chapters 1 and 2 of this work provide an introduction to colloidal quantum dots and their use as single photon emitters. It includes a description of photonic crystal microcavities and their ability to enhance the spontaneous emission rate of quantum dots. The synthesis and basic characterization of PbSe and PbS quantum dots is then discussed in chapter 3. In particular, a new synthetic method for the preparation of highly photoluminescent PbS quantum dots is presented. PbSe/CdSe core/shell quantum dots prepared by a cation exchange reaction are also described and a significant improvement in photo-stability is shown. Chapter 3 concludes with a description of three different surface modification techniques. PbSe core and PbSe/CdSe core/shell materials are investigated further in chapter 4 by advanced characterization techniques that include high-angle annular dark field (HAADF) imaging, energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy (EF-TEM) imaging, energy-dependent X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy (XPS), small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and small angle neutron scattering (SANS). The information obtained from these techniques is combined to form a structural model of the PbSe core and PbSe/CdSe core/shell quantum dots with greater complexity than previously reported. In chapter 5, the temperature-dependent photoluminescence from PbSe and PbSe/CdSe core/shell quantum dots is discussed and a thermal model is presented that accounts for the large (non-trivial) temperature dependence of the Stokes shift and photoluminescence lineshape over the entire temperature range (4.5 to 295 K). Chapter 6 examines two scalable methods to integrate the colloidal quantum dots into silicon two-dimensional photonic crystal slab microcavities (a requirement for efficient single photon emission). Finally, conclusions and possible future work are discussed in chapter 7.

Book excerpt: Realization of linear quantum computation and establishing secure quantum communication among interacting parties demand for triggered quantum sources delivering genuine single and entangled photons. However, the intrinsic energy level spectrum of nanostructures made by the nature or developed under a random growth process energetically lacks the expected figures of merit to produce such quantized states of photons. Here, I present the semi-empirical modeling and experimental investigation on the spin fine structure of strongly confining quantum dots embedded in III-V nanowires. To this end, the quantum dot is numerically modeled via the Configuration Interaction method at two different levels: 1) single-particle level, where its pure energy level structure is resolved in the presence of strain and spin-orbit interaction. 2) Few-particle level, at which the few-body interactions appear as perturbative energy corrections and orbital correlations. I demonstrate the influence of quantum confinement on the binding energies and spin fine structure of excitons in the absence of hyperfine interaction. Importantly, the high-symmetry character of excitonic orbitals in nanowire quantum dots restore the degeneracy of optically-active ground-state excitons, offering an ideal spectrum for the entangled photon pair generation. To experimentally verify the idea, we design and fabricate defect-free nanowire quantum dots with ultra-clean excitonic spectrum, and construct the time correlation function of emitted photons through performing a series of low-temperature statistical quantum optics measurements. We observe a decent performance in terms of single photon generation under low excitation powers. Moreover, photon pairs emitted from the biexciton-exciton cascade of nanowire quantum dots exhibit color indistinguishability and polarization entanglement owing to the trivial fine structure splitting of the ground-state excitons. We further extend the idea by proposing the hybridized states of a nanowire-based quantum dot molecule as the potential source of higher-order entangled states. Tracing the field-dependent spectrum suggests the appearance of dominant features under the weak localization of electrons and coherent tunneling of holes. In addition to their Coulomb correlation, excitons also remain spatially correlated, opening new transition channels normally forbidden in the ground state of a single dot. The proposed structure can be exploited to create tripartite hybrid, GHZ and W-entangled states.

By embedding the quantum dots in III-V nanowires, the collection efficiency from the quantum dot is greatly increased. Our goal is to develop a platform that allows for the stable and efficient generation of single-photons on chip. This on-chip design offers an enhanced degree of stability and miniaturization, important in many applications involving the processing of quantum information. In this thesis, we demonstrate the efficient coupling of quantum light generated in a III-V photonic nanowire to a silicon-based photonic integrated circuit. We use high quality SiN waveguide devices fabricated by a foundry (LIGENTEC) to minimize coupling and propagation losses through the waveguide. A hybrid integration of these single-photon sources with a photonic integrated circuit is developed by employing a "pick & place" method which uses a nanomanipulator in a scanning electron microscope setup. By tailoring the nanowire geometry, we are able to maximize the efficient coupling between the optical mode of the photonic nanowire and an accompanying SiN waveguide through evanescent coupling. To determine the effectiveness of our integration method, we compare our hybrid devices with free-standing nanowires on their growth substrate. For each set, we measured the optical properties (brightness, spectral purity, lifetime, and single-photon purity) and efficiencies of the devices. We have shown that using tapered nanowires with embedded quantum dots coupled to on-chip photonic structures is a viable route for the fabrication of stable, high-efficiency, single-photon sources. Although the measured collection efficiencies from device to device were substantially different 9.6%~93%, we have found that the optical properties of the hybrid devices were hardly impacted from the transfer process. In fact, from the same nanowire that achieved 93% coupling efficiency, we were able to measure a single photon purity of 97%. By comparing the amount of emitted light collected from both ends of the nanowire (taper and base), we confirmed that the coupling efficiency of the devices have a strong dependence on the geometry of the nanowire as collection from the taper yielded count rates at least 10x greater than from the base. From our promising results, we can envision integrating the nanowire devices with different types of photonic structures such as ring resonators.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanoscopic superconducting meander patterns offer great promise as a new class of cryogenic radiation sensors capable of single photon detection. To realize this potential, control of the superconducting properties on the nanoscale is imperative. To this end, Superconducting Nanowire Single Photon Detectors (SNSPDs) are under development by means Energetic Neutral Atom Beam Lithography and Epitaxy, or ENABLE. ENABLE can growth highly-crystalline, epitaxial thin-film materials, like NbN, at low temperatures; such wide-ranging control of fabrication parameters is enabling the optimization of film properties for single photon detection. T{sub c}, H{sub c2},?{sub GL} and J{sub c} of multiple thin films and devices have been studied as a function of growth conditions. The optimization of which has already produced devices with properties rivaling all reports in the existing literature.
