Book excerpt: As part of an overall effort to develop durability and damage tolerance methodology for graphite-epoxy composites, coupon specimens have been developed to measure the fundamental static fracture and subcritical growth behavior of delaminations. Two basic designs, one for the tensile opening mode (Mode I) and one for the forward shear mode (Mode II), are described. These specimens were used to characterize the behavior of two types of interfaces (0/0 and 0/90) for static fracture, constant amplitude fatigue, and spectrum fatigue. Fracture mechanics technology was applied through the principles of strain-energy release rate. Three-dimensional finite-element analyses were employed to interpret the experimental results. A simple growth law was shown to correlate the constant-amplitude and spectrum-growth data. It was found that the applied cyclic load must be nearly equal to the critical static load to obtain observable growth in the tensile opening mode. On the other hand, the graphite-epoxy delamination growth rate in the forward shear mode is comparable to the aluminum growth rate in tension, which suggests that shear is the chief subcritical growth mode for graphite-epoxy.

Book excerpt: This paper investigates the roles Mode I (opening mode) and Mode II (inplane shear) strain-energy release rates (GI and GII, respectively), play in inducing delamination growth under static and fatigue loading. Double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens were used for pure Mode I tests. Cracked lap shear (CLS) specimens were used for mixed-mode tests. All specimens were fabricated using T300/5208 graphite/epoxy. Delaminations were introduced during fabrication by inserting folded Kapton films between selected plies. Delaminations were located between two 0° plies in an attempt to inhibit delamination growth across plies into adjacent interfaces. The critical Mode I strain-energy release rate, GIc, was obtained from static DCB tests. Static tests on mixed-mode CLS specimens measured the total strain-energy release rate, which was broken into GI and GII components using a geometrically nonlinear finite-element analysis. By incorporating these values of GI and GII, and GIc from static DCB test results, into an assumed failure criterion, the critical Mode II strain energy release rate (GIIc) was computed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The onset and growth of delaminations in unnotched [±30/±30/90/90 ̄]s graphite-epoxy laminates is described quantitatively. These laminates, designed to delaminate at the edges under tensile loads, were tested and analyzed. Delamination growth and stiffness loss were monitored nondestructively. Laminate stiffness decreased linearly with delamination size. The strain energy release rate, G, associated with delamination growth, was calculated from two analyses. A critical G for delamination onset was determined, and then was used to predict the onset of delaminations in [+45n/-45n/0n/90n]s (n = 1,2,3) laminates. A delamination resistance curve (R-curve) was developed to characterize the observed stable delamination growth under quasi-static loading. A power law correlation between G and delamination growth rates in fatigue was established.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A total of 300 sandwich column specimens manufactured from Hercules ASl/3501-6 or AS4/3501-6 were loaded uniaxially in compression until failure. The facesheets of the specimens were 350 mm long and 50 mm wide and had layups of either [[theta]0], [±[theta]/0]s or [0/[theta]]s with [theta] varying from 0° to 90°. Out of the specimens tested, 165 were virgin specimens. These allowed the test article and test method to be evaluated and provided a data base of stress-strain and fracture behavior for use in this and future investigations. Furthermore, the uniaxial sandwich column proved to be an excellent characterization specimen. Delaminations were manufactured into 135 specimens, all with a layup of either [±60/0]s or [0/±60]s, by placing a Teflon fabric insert at a ply interface prior to curing. Both through-width and elliptical delaminations were used. The elliptical delaminations had an aspect ratio between 1/4 and 4. The longitudinal length of the delaminations varied between 3.2 mm and 25.4 mm. The buckling and growth behavior was monitored using strain gages, edge replication techniques, and moire interferometry. The growth of delaminations placed at the first ply interface of [0/±60]s specimens showed no dependence on the original delamination size after an initial "break in". Delaminations at the first ply interface of [0/±60]s] specimens did not grow prior to final failure. Delaminitions at the second ply interface of [0/±60]s specimens indicate a strong interaction between in-plane and out-of-plane failure mechanisms which lead to a complication of the failure process. Based on the experimental data, the concept of an inherent delamination size is introduced and suggested to be on the order of a 2 mm diameter circle. A model is introduced which incorporates the interply matrix layer as an elastic foundation, thus more accurately representing the boundary constraint at the delamination tip. Both one- and two-dimensional buckling predictions are performed which yield the interlaminar normal stresses in the matrix region. A maximum interlaminar normal stress criterion is applied to an averaged stress to predict the growth point and the incremental delamination growth. The effect of the foundation is to lower the predicted buckling stress by 10% in the one-dimensional model and by more than 17% in the two-dimensional model. Moreover, the progressive growth model predicts the successive perimeters of a general delamination. The inclusion of the matrix layer acting as elastic foundation greatly refines the prediction methods and yields a greater understanding of the mechanisms involved in failure via delamination buckling and growth.

Book excerpt: Double-cantilevered beam specimens of IM7/8552 graphite/epoxy from two different manufacturers were tested in static and fatigue to compare the material characterization data and to evaluate a proposed ASTM standard for generating Paris Law equations for delamination growth. Static results were used to generate compliance calibration constants for reducing the fatigue data, and a delamination resistance curve, GIR, for each material. Specimens were tested in fatigue at different initial cyclic GImax levels to determine a delamination onset curve and the delamination growth rate. The delamination onset curve equations were similar for the two sources. Delamination growth rate was calculated by plotting da/dN versus GImax on a log-log scale and fitting a Paris Law. Two different data reduction methods were used to calculate da/dN. To determine the effects of fiber-bridging, growth results were normalized by the delamination resistance curves. Paris Law exponents decreased by 31% to 37% after normalizing the data. Visual data records from the fatigue tests were used to calculate individual compliance constants from the fatigue data. The resulting da/dN versus GImax plots showed improved repeatability for each source, compared to using averaged static data. The Paris Law expressions for the two sources showed the closest agreement using the individually fit compliance data. Murri, Gretchen B. Book excerpt: Over the last three decades, the evolution of techniques for the experimental testing of composite materials has struggled to keep up with the advances and broadening areas of application of the composite materials themselves. In recent years, however, much work has been done to consolidate and better understand the test methods being used. Finally, a consensus regarding the best available methods exists, and definitive recommendations can be made. Experimental Characterization of Advanced Composite Materials provides a succinct, authoritative treatment of the best available methods for determining the mechanical properties, thermal expansion coefficients, and fracture and strength data for composite materials. With an emphasis firmly on practical matters, it presents processing techniques, specimen preparation, analyses of test methods, test procedures, and data reduction schemes. Five chapters covering specific aspects of lamina testing are followed by discussions extending those principles to laminate responses. The treatment concludes by exploring composite durability issues with a detailed examination of defects and fracture mechanics. The Fourth Edition is revised to include: New figures, updated ASTM standards, and an expanded index Major additions in processing of thermoset resins, neat resin tests, sandwich structures, cure analyses, damage tolerance tests, single fiber tests, fiber matrix interface tests, interlaminar tension tests, through-thickness tension and compression tests, open-hole compression tests, falling weight impact tests, compression-after-impact tests, sandwich beam and core tests, and more With its concise format, detailed procedures, and expert assessments, this book is an outstanding resource for composites manufacturing and test engineers, lab technicians, and other industry professionals, as well as students, academia, and government research and engineering organizations. It brings together all of the most appropriate and widely accepted test methods developed to date.

Book excerpt: It is generally accepted that the onset and stable growth of edge delaminations under quasi-static loading can be characterized using the strain energy release rate G and delamination resistance curves (R curves). This study addresses the problem of edge delamination growth under fatigue loading. To characterize the fatigue growth successfully, it is shown that it is not sufficient to consider only the maximum energy (Gmax) released as the delamination grows. Instead, the energy released must be compared to the increasing resistance to further growth. This increasing resistance to delamination grwoth GR can be explained best in terms of the associated matrix cracking, which is observed under both static and fatigue loading. Using results from a [±30/±30/90/9 ̄0]s T300-5208 and a [45/0/-45/90]s XAS-914 graphite-epoxy laminate, separate power law correlations between the edge delamination fatigue growth rates and the term (Gmax/GR) are obtained. The measured exponents are in the range 4.1 to 6.
