Book excerpt: In 2008, the North Carolina General Assembly passed House Bill 2436 that required the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to study the water-quality effects of bridges on receiving streams. In response, the NCDOT and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) collaborated on a study to provide information necessary to address the requirements of the Bill. To better understand the effects of stormwater runoff from bridges on receiving streams, the following tasks were performed: (1) characterize stormwater runoff quality and quantity from a representative selection of bridges in North Carolina; (2) measure stream water quality upstream from selected bridges to compare bridge deck stormwater concentrations and loads to stream constituent concentrations and loads; and (3) determine if the chemistry of bed sediments upstream and downstream from selected bridges differs substantially based on presence or absence of a best manage-ment practice for bridge runoff.

Book Synopsis Stormwater Runoff and Receiving Systems by : Edwin Herricks
Download or read book Stormwater Runoff and Receiving Systems written by Edwin Herricks and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-07-25 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary focus of stormwater and urban runoff research during the past twenty-five years has been on the physical description and the chemical quality assessment of runoff events and the design and implementation of the best management practices to control these events. There is a definite need for more effective integration of receiving system issues in the management and regulation of stormwater runoff. This book successfully brings together a diverse group of environmental specialists to address the issues surrounding the assessment, management, and control of stormwater, and more specifically urban runoff, from a receiving system perspective. The book's emphasis on the receiving system is timely, coming during a period when the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is placing increasing emphasis on wet weather conditions through a new permit program for stormwater runoff and a policy on combined sewer overflows. Stormwater Runoff and Receiving Systems covers biocriteria, assessment of receiving water integrity, and integrated watershed analysis-all aspects of current water quality management programs for both industrial and municipal areas. More than thirty chapters are divided into six sections, offering in-depth discussions on various issues relating to stormwater, urban runoff, and receiving systems; impacts; uncertainty and risk; study design; impact mitigation; and issues analysis. Anyone who deals with regulatory programs requiring stormwater effect assessment including more than sampling and analysis of chemical water quality parameters in effluents will find this reference particularly useful.

Book excerpt: Most of the pollution found in highway runoff is both directly and indirectly contributed by vehicles such as cars and trucks. The constituents that contribute the majority of the pollution, such as metals, chemical oxygen demand, oil and grease, are generally deposited on the highways. These can become very harmful and detrimental to human health when they come in contact with our water system. The connecting tie between these harmful highway-made pollution and our water system, which includes our ground waters and surface waters, is rainfall. The main objective of this runoff study was to characterize and assess the quantity and quality of the storm water runoff of a bridge deck that discharged into a receiving water body. The bridge deck and the creek were located in the coastal margin region in the southeast area of Texas on the border of Harris and Galveston counties. Flow-activated water samplers and flow-measuring devices were installed to quantitatively determine the rate of flow of the bridge deck and determine different pollutant loading by sampling the receiving water body (Clear Creek). The collected samples were analyzed for total suspended solids, toxic metals, and other relevant constituents of concerns. The results illustrated that the runoff from the bridge deck exhibited low total suspended solids concentrations (which were highest in the creek). However, other metal constituents like the zinc and cooper concentration were high and above standards. The phosphate concentrations in the creek were the highest and exceeded EPA standards. Several nitrate concentrations were also noticeably above EPA standards.

Book Synopsis Influence of Stormwater Management Structures on Denitrification Activity in Urban Streams During Baseflow and Stormflow in Charlotte, North Carolina by : Erin Nicole Looper

This book was released on 2014 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban stream ecosystems are vulnerable to impacts that are associated with land cover change, primarily increases in impervious surface cover that lead to increased delivery of runoff and pollutants to receiving streams. In an effort to curtail the effects of urban runoff on receiving water bodies, stormwater control measures (SCMs) are implemented to reduce the quantity and improve the quality of the water entering urban streams. This study assessed the influence of SCMs on receiving urban streams in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA during baseflow conditions and storm events to better understand the effects of SCMs on stream ecosystems across varying degrees of urbanization. Denitrification activity was analyzed during baseflow conditions to identify the patterns of denitrification in receiving streams with different SCM types and land development histories. Patterns of sediment microbial community functional resistance and resilience following floods were assessed to evaluate the influence of an SCM during storm events. Ambient denitrification (DNF) rates and denitrification enzyme activity (DEA) were measured on composite sediment samples collected upstream and downstream of the SCM-stream confluence during baseflow and before and after storm events. Denitrification activity was shown to be enhanced by SCMs in watersheds with low impervious surface. Microbial functional resistance was shown to be reduced downstream of the SCM; however, microbial community function was observed to be highly resilient downstream of the SCM. This work will help guide future management decisions regarding SCM implementation within urban landscapes and further the understanding of the effects of hydrologic disturbance on instream biogeochemistry.
