Due to their superior fuel economy, high power density and low carbon dioxide emissions, turbocharged, small bore, high speed, direct injection diesel engines are being considered to power light duty vehicles. Such vehicles have to meet stringent emission standards. However, it is difficult to meet these standards by modifying the in-cylinder thermodynamic and combustion processes to reduce engine-out emissions. After-treatment devices will be needed to achieve even lower emission targets required in the production engines to account for the anticipated deterioration after long periods of operation in the field. To reduce the size, mass and cost of the after-treatment devices, there is a need to reduce engine-out emissions and optimize both the engine and the aftertreatment devices as one integrated system. For example, the trade-off between engine-out NOx and PM, suggests that one of these species can be minimized in the engine, with a penalty in the other, which can be addressed efficiently in the after-treatment devices. Controlling engine-out emissions can be achieved by optimizing many engine design and operating parameters. The design parameters include, but are not limited to, the type of injection system: (CRS) Common Rail System, (HEUI) Hydraulically Actuated and Electronically controlled Unit Injector, or (EUI) Electronic Unit Injector; engine compression ratio, combustion chamber design (bowl design), reentrance geometry, squish area and intake and exhaust ports design. With four-valve engines, the swirl ratio depends on the design of both the tangential and helical ports and their relative locations. For any specific engine design, the operating variables need also to be optimized. These include injection pressure, injection rate, injection duration and timing (pilot, main, and post injection), EGR ratio, and swirl ratio. The goal of the program is to gain a better understanding of the spray behavior under high injection pressures in small-bore, high compression ratio, high-speed, direct-injection diesel engines equipped with advanced fuel injection system. The final results demonstrate the capability of the engine in reducing the engine-out emissions and improve the trade-off between nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter, other emissions and fuel economy. This report introduces a new phenomenological model for the fuel distribution and combustion, and emissions formation in the small bore, high speed, direct injection diesel engine. This will be followed by an analysis of the effect of each of injection pressure, EGR, injection advance and retard and swirl ratio on engine-out emissions and fuel economy. A discussion will be given on the 2-D and 3-D trade of maps. Finally a discussion will be made on the low temperature combustion regimes, its major problems and proposed solutions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internal combustion engine is one of beautiful engineering knowledge in engineering scope. Internal combustion consists of two type categories which are Spark Ignition (SI) and Compression Ignition (CI). Based on internal combustion engine, a lot of research can be done to improve the performance of engine, fuel consumption, and emission. One of the researches is Experiment and Analysis of Intake Design for Single Cylinder Engine. The main objective is to study the variable design length to increase the performance of the engine. The second is to obtain high power and torque at low speed of engine (rpm) based on the change of intake parameter. The experiment is handle by utilize the Eddy Current Dynamometer 15kW. There are two difference length of intake pipeline which is 52mm and 73mm. the length that change are from 90 degree angle until joining of intake pipe. Before undergo the experiment, test rig of the engine need to fabricate because the engine that use is difference from previous experiment of dynamometer. To fabricate the test rig, four elements involve which are sketching, designing, analysis, and fabrication. These experiments consist of three different result which is baseline graph, length of intake 52mm and length of intake 73mm. The graphs are plot for power and torque graph versus speed of engine. When there are changes of the length of the intake pipe, the torque graph will be change according to the difference length. The increasing of the length, the result of torque and power graph will be more improve. But there are limit to make sure the intake pipe length not give bad impact to the engine. The result concluded that, the better length of intake pipe is the longer one which is 73mm and this result can be applied to student formula race.

Book excerpt: In spite of progress in the development of alternative powertrain systems and energy sources, the internal combustion and all its derivates still are and will be the main powertrain for automobiles. In SI-engines, several approaches compete with each other like the controlled auto ignition (CAI or HCCI), throttle-free load control using variable valvetrains, stratified mixture formation with lean engine operation or highly turbo charged downsizing concepts all combined with gasoline direct injection. The presented work makes a contribution for a deeper understanding of the combustion process of a turbo charged direct injection engine operating with external EGR as well as lean stratified mixture. Using detailed test bench investigations and introducing a new optical measurement tool, the combustion process is described in detail focusing on the occurrence of non-premixed combustion phenomena. The influence of engine parameters like global and local air-/fuel ratio, external EGR and fuel rail pressure as well as the influence of fuel parameters are discussed giving a characterization of the combustion process of stratified engine operation. Furthermore, the influences of non-inert exhaust gas components on engine knock tendency are investigated using external EGR with an EGR catalyst. Opposing the results to numerical analysis, combustion characteristics of turbo charged DISI-engines are presented.
