Book excerpt: A method for the use of Particle Image Velocimetry in the Rutgers Supersonic Wind Tunnel is established and described. The use of ice crystals as PIV seed material is tested using an oblique shock as a step response to estimate the particle lag time and particle diameter. These values were found to be 2.8 æs and 0.43 æm respectively. The Stokes number was found to be St = 0.11. The statistical properties of the undisturbed boundary layer are determined using PIV data and simplifying assumptions. The boundary layer thickness is? = 15.6mm and the free stream velocity is U1 = 621m/s. This velocity corresponds to an approximate Mach number of 3.22. Using the Clauser method, the shear velocity is u = 22.45m/s. The log-law region has a last reliable point at height y+? 500 and extends to y+? 3000. Velocity fluctuation values and trends are in agreement with published results. Investigation of streamwise XY planes of the boundary layer suggest the existence of coherent structures, particularly hairpin vortices. Galilean decomposition clearly shows vortex structures at height y/??0.2 at a convection velocity of Uc/U? = 0.75. Investigating a spanwise XZ plane at height y/?=0.1 shows coherent regions of high and low velocity which stretch beyond the fleld of view. Shock Wave Turbulent Boundary Layer Interaction is investigated in the case of a 6 and 9 degree angle of attack flat plate used to generate an oblique shock which impinges upon the turbulent boundary layer. In the 9 degree case, an average separated region of the boundary layer exists to be 2.11? long in the streamwise direction and exhibits the characteristics of a strong interaction. Ahead of the separated region, a separation shock shows streamwise motion of about ±0.25?. The 6 degree case shows no boundary layer separation in the mean flow. A reflected shock exhibits reasonably steady behavior which is characteristic of a weak interaction. The sonic line shows that the subsonic layer dilates to a height of y/?=0.27 and y/?=0.7 for the 6 and 9 degree case respectively. In both interactions, the recovery of the boundary layer extends beyond the fleld of view in the streamwise direction.

Interactions with thin boundary layers were used to obtain overall characteristics, while interactions with thick boundary layers permitted detailed high resolution surveys. Investigations of the interactions were carried out by mean and high frequency surface pressure distribution measurements, surface flow visualization, and mean total head, yaw, and static pressure distributions through the flowfield. Major new data sets were obtained for the interaction of the shock wave generated by a 20 deg fin, and by a 24 deg wedge swept at 60 deg to the incoming flow. A series of tests were carried out to examine new concepts of three-dimensional interactions and extensive 'non-steady' results were obtained from the high frequency surface pressure distributions. Close coordination of the experiments with major computational efforts, support new concepts of flow structure and physics for these complex interactions. Book excerpt: Particle-image velocimetry (PIV) is used to measure instantaneous velocity fields in the streamwise wall-normal plane of a zero-pressure-gradient turbulent boundary layer. In total, 340 PIV realizations of the boundary layer were obtained at Reynolds numbers based on momentum thickness of Ree = 930, 2370 and 6845. Each realization contains approximately 10000 two-component velocity vectors which are accurate to within 0.4 to 1.0% of the free-stream velocity. The PIV results are used to examine coherent structures throughout the boundary layer and determine their Reynolds-number dependencies. Coherent structures have been an important part of turbulent boundary-layer research for more than thirty years. By understanding coherent structures, their Reynolds-number dependencies and their dynamical characteristics, engineers and scientists will be better able to control and predict turbulent flows. A 20 m long low-turbulence boundary-layer research facility was developed for the measurement of turbulent boundary layers using particle-image velocimetry. Hot-film anemometer measurements show that the turbulence intensities at the test section inlet are about 0.16%, at a free-stream velocity of 6 m/s. A PIV interrogation and vector-validation system was developed to conduct the PIV measurements efficiently. The interrogation system utilizes eight i860 array processors in parallel to achieve a peak aggregate performance of 640 Mflops. Using 128 x 128 pixel cross correlations, it processes 100 vectors per second. Two-dimensional maps of in-plane velocity vectors, spanwise vorticity, Reynolds stress, and streamwise and wall-normal velocity contours show the instantaneous structures in the overlap and outer regions of the boundary layer. Details of large-scale motions protruding into the free stream are clearly shown in the outer region. The overlap region consists of shear layers oriented at 45$spcirc$ from the wall and are associated with transverse vortical elements, which are located above and slightly downstream of the shear layers. Comparisons between measured coherent structures and theories of Theodorsen, Townsend and Perry et al. are given. Two-dimensional spatial correlation functions of streamwise velocity, wall-normal velocity, spanwise vorticity and Reynolds stress are used to examine the statistically relevant structure of the boundary layer and its Reynolds-number dependency. Stochastic estimation is used to estimate conditional eddies throughout the boundary layer and reveal their Reynolds-number dependencies.

The interaction is generated by a cylinder mounted on a flat plate in a Mach 5 flow. Planar laser scattering (PLS) and particle image velocimetry (PIV) are used to visualize the flow structure. Images are obtained in streamwise-spanwise planes (plan view). Earlier work focused on investigating similar interactions with tripped boundary layers, whereas the current work focuses on the case where transition occurs naturally. One goal of this preliminary study was to see if repeatable interactions could be generated. Imaging was conducted for three downstream locations of the cylinder. The PLS imaging revealed that the transitional interactions resulting from an untripped boundary layer are similar to those generated by tripping. In general it is observed that the separated flow region of transitional interactions exhibits larger variations in their scale and shape than fully turbulent interactions. When the cylinder is farthest upstream (5.3 diameters from leading edge) two types of separation shock are seen: an apparently laminar shock along the plate centerline and a turbulent one in the outboard region. As the cylinder is moved downstream (10.7 diameters), this dual structure is not as apparent, which is consistent with the upstream boundary layer becoming more turbulent. Finally, at 16 diameters downstream the interaction exhibits extreme variations in its shape, which we believe to be caused by sidewall interference. The PIV measurements largely confirm these qualitative observations.

The experiments involve supersonic flows in wind tunnels with a shock generator that directs an oblique shock wave toward the boundary layer along one of the walls of the wind tunnel. The Wind-US calculations utilized structured grid computations performed in Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes mode. Four turbulence models were investigated: the Spalart-Allmaras one-equation model, the Menter Baseline and Shear Stress Transport k-omega two-equation models, and an explicit algebraic stress k-omega formulation. Effects of grid resolution and upwinding scheme were also considered. The results from the CFD calculations are compared to particle image velocimetry (PIV) data from the experiments. As expected, turbulence model effects dominated the accuracy of the solutions with upwinding scheme selection indicating minimal effects.
