Book excerpt: The San Andreas fault system is distributed across hundreds of kilometers in southern California. This transform system includes offshore faults along the shelf, slope and across the Gulf of Santa Catalina basin (GSCB) - comprising part of the Inner California Continental Borderland. Previously, offshore faults have been interpreted as being discontinuous and striking parallel to the coast between Long Beach and San Diego. Our work, based on several thousand kilometers of deep-penetration industry multi-channel seismic reflection data (MCS) as well as high resolution U.S. Geological Survey MCS, indicates that many of the offshore faults are more geometrically continuous than previously reported including Newport-Inglewood (NI)-San Mateo-Carlsbad(SMC), and Coronado Bank Detachment(CBD)-Descanso faults. We interpret a ~18 km wide step over from the NI-SMC positive flower structure in the north to the CBD-Descanso negative flower structure in the south adjacent to San Diego. These faults and stratigraphic interpretations were gridded and depth converted for modeling slip amounts and orientation on the San Mateo-Carlsbad fault. Stratigraphic interpretations of MCS profiles included the ca. 1.8 Ma Top Lower Pico (TLP), which was correlated from wells located offshore Long Beach (Sorlien et al 2010). Based on this age constraint, four younger (Late) Quaternary unconformities (Q1,Q2,Q3,Q4) are interpreted through much of GSCB. We correlate the Q horizons to core hole data in Los Angeles harbor and constrain their ages: Q1 is 160-300; ka Q2 is 300 ka; Q3 300-450 ka; and Q4 ~600 ka. These ages are an order of magnitude older than interpretations published by Covault and Romans (2009). Assuming the ages that were used to calculate slip are correct, we estimate an average slip rate of ~0.44mm/yr on the San Mateo-Carlsbad with an average azimuth direction of 169° which is significantly less than when calculated with younger interpreted ages and indicates that the SMC fault is a right-lateral strike-slip fault. Our modeling also indicates that the SMC fault is kinematically continuous with a right stepover at its southern extent. This change in SMC strike marks a boundary between transpression in the north and transtension in the south and is significant to understanding future tectonic episodes.

Book excerpt: A new approach to the understanding of crustal deformation was developed under this grant. This approach combined aspects of fractals, chaos, and self-organized criticality to provide a comprehensive theory for deformation on distributed faults. It is hypothesized that crustal deformation is an example of comminution: Deformation takes place on a fractal distribution of faults resulting in a fractal distribution of seismicity. Our primary effort under this grant was devoted to developing an understanding of distributed deformation in the continental crust. An initial effort was carried out on the fractal clustering of earthquakes in time. It was shown that earthquakes do not obey random Poisson statistics, but can be approximated in many cases by coupled, scale-invariant fractal statistics. We applied our approach to the statistics of earthquakes in the New Hebrides region of the southwest Pacific because of the very high level of seismicity there. This work was written up and published in the Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America. This approach was also applied to the statistics of the seismicity on the San Andreas fault system. Book excerpt: Damage zones adjacent to or associated with faults are important to the geologic community because of their implications to hazards and their ability to preserve evidence for, and show history of, slip, fluid flow, and deformation associated with large strike-slip faults. We examine two fault zones in southern California where fault zone damage is expressed. We revisit the drilled crystalline core from the Cajon Pass California drill hole, 4 km northeast of the San Andreas fault (SAF), and 1 km north of the Cleghorn fault, to perform a systematic structural analysis of deformation and alteration associated with strike-slip faulting at the site. The core preserved 19 fault zones, 11 of which were not previously identified. The most significant fault is a fully intact steep-dipping fault zone at 3,402 m depth with potassium feldspar and epidote alteration. This fault correlates well with the nearby left-lateral Cleghorn fault. The extent of deformation varies within the core, and is controlled by the size of the fault zones intersected by the core. We also examined the nature of right separation across the Clark fault damage zone along the Santa Rosa segment using a marker assemblage of biotite, hornblendebearing tonalite - marble - bearing metasedimentary rocks - migmatite located in Coyote Mountain and the southeast Santa Rosa Mountains. Separation measured from this study is 16.8 km + 3.67 km / -6.03 km. Our measurement uses the updated location of the Clark fault in Clark Lake Valley and matches a distinctive lithologic contact across the fault instead of matching the diffuse western boundary of the Eastern Peninsular mylonite zone as previously used. We calculate the errors associated with projecting the contacts across Quaternary cover to the trace of the Clark fault, and consider a range of projections. Additional strain may have been accommodated in folds and small faults within the damage zone of the San Jacinto fault zone. Two large map-scale folds deform the marker assemblage near the San Jacinto fault zone and we tested whether Cretaceous ductile deformation or brittle late Quaternary right slip produced the folds.
