Book excerpt: In piston ring pack design, there is a tradeoff between reducing friction and increasing oil consumption. While friction reduces engine efficiency, oil consumption can poison exhaust aftertreatment systems. The primary method in studying the balance between friction and oil consumption is by understanding and modeling oil transport. This study used Two-Dimensional Laser Induced Fluorescence (2D LIF) on a one-cylinder spark ignition research engine to view real-time oil transport in the power cylinder. The Lower Region, comprised of the 3' Land, skirt chamfer, the oil control ring (OCR), and the OCR groove, was the focus of this study for a number of real-world engine operating conditions. Previous studies noted that the interaction between oil and blowby gas flow is complex and important. What this research study attempted was a characterization and decoupling of the mechanisms governing oil transport into and out of the groove. This was accomplished by testing multiple piston ring pack configurations, thereby analyzing the effects of OCR and groove design. Namely a piston with no drain holes, a "Multi-Enlarged Hole" piston, and a baseline/production piston were used in conjunction with a U-Flex and Two-Piece OCR. In carrying out this analysis, a gross scaling relationship was created, utilizing the obtained LIF videos as a connection between the scaling model and the experiments' results. Mechanisms were classified into three types of oil transport: supply, release, and leakage. The primary mechanism of oil supply to the groove occurred during the intake stroke due to OCR downscraping. Oil's release from the groove was via the drain holes due to viscous shearing by blowby gases during the expansion stroke. It was found necessary that the releasing mechanism properly utilize the gas flow as well as the drainage area. Oil leakage out the groove was shown to be caused by inertia forcing oil out through the OCR gap during the intake, compression, and exhaust strokes. It was revealed that this leakage supplied oil to the Upper Region under throttled conditions. Additionally, the leakage locally affected the oil patterns of the 3rd Land and skirt. This study is the first to document many phenomena involved in oil transport within the Lower Region. The scaling relationships that resulted from such analysis created a framework that is an initial step towards a more complete model of oil transport in the Lower Region.

However, the daily driving schedule of automotive and truck engines is inherently related to unsteady conditions. In fact, only a very small portion of a vehicle’s operating pattern is true steady-state, e. g. , when cruising on a motorway. Moreover, the most critical conditions encountered by industrial or marine engines are met during transients too. Unfortunately, the transient operation of turbocharged diesel engines has been associated with slow acceleration rate, hence poor driveability, and overshoot in particulate, gaseous and noise emissions. Despite the relatively large number of published papers, this very important subject has been treated in the past scarcely and only segmentally as regards reference books. Merely two chapters, one in the book Turbocharging the Internal Combustion Engine by N. Watson and M. S. Janota (McMillan Press, 1982) and another one written by D. E. Winterbone in the book The Thermodynamics and Gas Dynamics of Internal Combustion Engines, Vol. II edited by J. H. Horlock and D. E. Winterbone (Clarendon Press, 1986) are dedicated to transient operation. Both books, now out of print, were published a long time ago. Then, it seems reasonable to try to expand on these pioneering works, taking into account the recent technological advances and particularly the global concern about environmental pollution, which has intensified the research on transient (diesel) engine operation, typically through the Transient Cycles certification of new vehicles.

In this manuscript, a remedy for this issue which takes the form of coordination loops of low-level controllers is proposed. This coordination uses a cylinder filling model, designed in the thesis. Experimental results prove that torque production and pollutant emissions can be improved.

To be effective, an engine lubricating system must successfully perform the functions of minimizing friction between the bearing surfaces of moving parts, dissipating heat, and keeping the engine parts clean by removing carbon and other foreign matter. In almost all modern internal-combustion engines, the system that provides the lube for these functions is the forced-lubrication system. Although there are many variations in lubricating systems for internal-combustion engines, the components and method of operation are basically the same. Steady state thermal analysis is carried out for the thermal fluid flow in the engine. Solidwork software is used for modeling the design and steady state analysis. The upper piston with variation of groove has been design for this simulation. For each piston, four different radius of groove design at the upper piston are use to analyze the thermal effect to the cylinder head and engine oil temperature. For conclusion, the quality of engine lubrication depends upon how much oil is supplied and how the lubricant is fed under thermal load of the components. This state of lubrication is closely related to the safe operation of an engine and its lifetime. Therefore, a practically optimized analytical method has been required by engine designers.

This model predicts the inter-ring gas pressure and 3-D displacements of the three rings at various circumferential locations. Model results show significant variations of the dynamic behavior along ring circumference. In the ring-pack lubrication model, an improved flow continuity algorithm is implemented in the ring/liner hydrodynamic lubrication, and proves to be very practicable. By coupling the ring/liner lubrication with the in-plane structural response of the ring, the lubrication along the entire ring circumference can be calculated. Model results show significant variations of lubrication along the circumference due to the non-axisymmetric characteristics of the power cylinder system. Bore distortion was found to have profound effects on oil transport along the liner. Particularly, it stimulates the occurrence of oil up-scraping by the top ring during compression stroke. Because the oil evaporation on the liner affects the liner oil film thickness, a sub-model for liner evaporation with consideration of multi-species oil is incorporated with the lubrication model. With consideration of oil transport along the liner, the prediction of evaporation is more precise. The combination of these models is a complete package for piston ring-pack analysis. It is computationally robust and efficient, and thus has appreciable practical value.
