Book excerpt: The purpose of this one-year effort was to identify and investigate some important effects that the optical systems have on the performance of imaging and non-imaging polarimeters. During our period of performance we concentrated on two primary areas; 1) Characterization of the effects of systematic errors in the polarization optics of non-imaging polarimeters through measurements and comparing these results to previous theory; and 2) Investigation of the effects of focal plane array nonuniformity on the performance of imaging polarimeters. In the first area, we have made some of the only available measurements that demonstrate the theoretical predictions made over the past several years. We have build a manually operated polarimeter testbed system, and are in the process of building a fully automated polarimeter testbed system. In the second area, we have modeled a rotating-retarder polarimeter operating with a focal plane array exhibiting response nonuniformity. We have found that gain and bias nonuniformity affect the imagery differently, and can be mitigated using NUC techniques that have been developed for conventional IR imagery.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The measurement and exploitation of polarization information has become a high priority in a variety of Air Force and DoD remote sensing missions. Polarization provides a useful dimension of information that helps to characterize shape and surface characteristics of interesting targets in optical imagery from the UV through the LWIR and beyond. There are a number of ongoing efforts that are developing specific instruments to quantitatively measure polarization information across a scene. We have discovered that polarization is important, but it can also be quite difficult to measure accurately. Optical systems designed to respond to polarization information are usually more complex than those that respond to spectral information. In addition, most polarimeters require linear combinations of multiple looks at a single pixel in order to infer the polarization parameters. In contrast, most spectral imagers (certain Fourier transform devices excepted) can form the spectrum at a pixel in a single integration time without comparing measurements from different sensors. Because polarization imagers are more complex, uncalibrated instrumental errors can be even more damaging to the quality of the final imagery. This research project was focused on understanding the instrumental effects on imaging polarimeters and compensating for them in the final imagery.

Humans have long benefited from our ability to distinguish light of different frequency based on its color. However, our eyes are not sensitive to the polarization of light. Devices to measure polarization are relatively rare and expertise in polarimetry even more so. Polarization sensors based on micropolarizer arrays appear to be the first devices capable of bringing polarimetric capability to a wide range of applications. Whereas previous polarimeters were built to perform very specific measurements, the same micropolarizer-based camera can be used on a telescope, a microscope, or with a conventional camera lens. In this work, I investigate the operating principles of micropolarizer arrays using high resolution 3D simulations and describe several strategies to fabricate and characterize micropolarizer-based imaging polarimeters. Furthermore, I show how to incorporate the device characterization into a calibrated demodulation procedure to extract polarimetric quantities from the raw pixel intensities. As part of this effort, I show how the measured sensor properties, like pixel throughput and contrast ratio, can be used to construct a software model to produce synthetic observations of various scenes. These synthetic data are a powerful tool to study the many effects which can give rise to systematic and/or random errors during the data analysis process. Finally, I present the polarimetry performed on several astronomical sources using the RIT Polarization Imaging Camera and compare my results to previous measurements made with conventional polarimeters. Using the current calibration of the RIT Polarization Imaging Camera, I was able to achieve a polarimetric accuracy of ~0.3% in images of extended objects and unresolved sources."--Abstract.

Book excerpt: Polarimetry is the method of recording the state of polarization of light. Imaging polarimetry extends this method to recording the spatially resolved state of polarization within a scene. Imaging-polarimetry data have the potential to improve the detection of manmade objects in natural backgrounds. We have constructed a midwave infrared complete imaging polarimeter consisting of a fixed wire-grid polarizer and rotating form-birefringent retarder. The retardance and the orientation angles of the retarder were optimized to minimize the sensitivity of the instrument to noise in the measurements. The optimal retardance was found to be 132° rather than the typical 90°. The complete imaging polarimeter utilized a liquid-nitrogen cooled PtSi camera. The fixed wire-grid polarizer was located at the cold stop inside the camera dewar. The complete imaging polarimeter was operated in the 4.42-5 [mu]m spectral range. A series of imaging experiments was performed using as targets a surface of water, an automobile, and an aircraft. Further analysis of the polarization measurements revealed that in all three cases the magnitude of circular polarization was comparable to the noise in the calculated Stokes-vector components.
