Book Synopsis Characterization of Graphite Fluoride, (CFx)n, as a Potential Solid Lubricant Material by : B. D. McConnell
Download or read book Characterization of Graphite Fluoride, (CFx)n, as a Potential Solid Lubricant Material written by B. D. McConnell and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graphite Fluoride (CFx)n, from several sources, has been analyzed and evaluated for its friction, wear, and lubrication behavior. Pressed pellets, burnished films, and bonded films of (CFx)n has been compared to similar specimens of MoS2 in several test devices at room temperature conditions. Although the various (CFx)n materials have been shown to vary in chemical composition, color, impurity levels, and thermal stability, no significant difference in lubrication performance has been observed between these materials in the lubricant test devices. In general, (CFx)n has been found to be inferior to MoS2 in its lubrication behavior in the more severe test environments. Therefore, (CFx)n is not considered to be suitable for use as a solid lubricant in Air Force aircraft and weapon systems having heavy load lubrication requirements.

Book excerpt: This volume reviews the preparation, structures, physicochemical properties and applications of graphite fluorides, mainly based on the results obtained by the authors. Their interest in graphite fluorides stemmed from research on the ``anode effect'', in electrolytic production of fluorine gas in KF.2HF melt using carbon electrodes. The formation of a thin graphite fluoride film on carbon anodes made it difficult to continue the electrolysis of KF.2HF at a high current density. To elucidate this phenomenon studies on graphite fluoride were initiated. In the course of these systematic studies, the use of graphite fluoride in high-energy batteries became successful: a new graphite fluoride (C2F)n was found; and another fluorineographite intercalation compound with ionic bonding, CxF, was synthesized. During this research it was established that CxF is closely associated with the ``anode effect''. The book will be of interest to all those involved in the study and research of graphite fluorides, particularly fluorine chemists, electrochemists, and fluorine and battery companies.
Book Synopsis Graphite Fluoride: A Proposed Solid Lubricant by : Karl R. Mecklenburg
Download or read book Graphite Fluoride: A Proposed Solid Lubricant written by Karl R. Mecklenburg and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graphite fluoride, a proposed solid lubricant material, was evaluated with a sphere-on-plane tester to determine if previously generated data could be reproduced. Preliminary experiments with (CFx)n (graphite fluoride), substituted int existing film formulations in place of MoS2, revealed extremely short wear-lives when other test geometries were used. However, with the sphere-on-plane configuration, the data previously reported were reproduced. Wear-lives and friction coefficients for burnished MoS2 and (CFx)n are presented, along with friction coefficients for the bare metal combinations used. Also included are compressive stress values in the test zone based upon the starting and finishing contact areas. (Author).

This book was released on 2010 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid lubricants possessing low friction coefficients, low wear rates, and long wear lives are vital for significantly increasing the life span of instruments undergoing extreme frictional wear due to harsh environments. Solid lubricants currently used in high temperatures or excess humidity, such as MoS 2, WS 2, graphite, or noble metals, are unable to sustain superior frictional qualities over extended amounts of time or in changing environments. To ameliorate these limiting properties, a composite solid lubricant is produced to enable the favorable frictional properties of one lubricant to overcome the lacking frictional properties of the other. This composite uses the combined materials to produce a solid lubricant that can sustain a low friction coefficient and wear rate for a longer amount of time than each individual material. Using the techniques used to produce these solid lubricant composite coatings with appealing frictional properties will provide a variety of tribological applications involving high temperature and/or high humidity environments with necessary solutions and further facilitate the improvement of solid lubricants used in other extreme environments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The compound CxAsF5 was prepared and characterized by x-ray diffraction and x-ray absorption, which show the presence of As(III) and As(V), and the As-F bond distances are consistent with AsF3 and AsF−6, CAsF−6 and C+8OsF−6 were synthesized. The CxAsF6 and numerous standard arsenic-flourine compounds were studied by x-ray absorption. Magnetic susceptibility of C+8OsF−6 confirms the high degree of oxidation in this compound. X-ray absorption studies were begun to determine the species present within the graphite when BrF3 or GeF4 + F2 are added. In the BrF3 case, Br2 is evolved and only Br(III) is present in the graphite. The binary phase diagram XeF2:Xe+5AsF−6 was investigated by melting point determination and Raman spectroscopy. This mixture near 1.3:1 forms a kinetically stable glass at room temperature and is molten at 50°C. Several new species or phases are observed in the Raman spectra. These species have been assigned tentative structures.
