Book excerpt: The use of composite materials in aerospace, electronics, and wind industries has become increasingly common, and these composite components are required to carry mechanical, electrical, and thermal loads simultaneously. A unique property of carbon fiber composites is that when an electric current is applied to the specimen, the mechanical strength of the specimen increases. Previous studies have shown that the higher the electric current, the greater the increase in impact strength. However, as current passes through the composite, heat is generated through Joule heating. This Joule heating can cause degradation of the composite and thus a loss in strength. In order to minimize the negative effects of heating, it is desired to apply a very high current for a very short duration of time. This thesis investigated the material responses of carbon fiber composite plates subjected to electrical current pulse loads of up to 1700 Amps. For 32 ply unidirectional IM7/977-3 specimens, the peak impact load and absorbed energy increased slightly with the addition of a current pulse at the time of an impact event. In 16 ply cross-ply IM7/977-2 specimens, the addition of the current pulse caused detrimental effects due to electrical arcing at the interface between the composite and electrodes. Further refinement of the experimental setup should minimize the risk of electrical arcing and should better elucidate the effects of a current pulse on the impact strength of the specimens.

Book excerpt: Electrical and thermal behavior of the carbon fiber polymer matrix composites subjected to time-varying and steady electric currents is studied. A fully automated experimental setup for real time measurements of the electric current, resistance, voltage, and temperature in carbon fiber polymer matrix composites has been developed. A series of electrical characterization tests on IM7/977-3 unidirectional and symmetric cross-ply composite laminates have been performed and the effects of electric current magnitude and duration, electrical resistance, and associated thermal effects have been investigated. It is determined that voltage-current relationship stays ohmic for up to 50 A steady currents, electrical resistance exhibits time-dependent behavior. It is also found that application of an electric current leads to a significant temperature rise in the composites that is a result of the intense Joule heat produced in the electrically conductive carbon fibers as well as in the composite-electrode contact.

Book excerpt: Here, the increasing use of Carbon Fiber-reinforced Polymer matrix Composites (CFPC) and aluminum alloys as lightweight materials in the automotive and aerospace industries demands enhanced surface preparation and control of surface morphology prior to joining. In this study, surfaces of both composite and aluminum were prepared for joining using an Nd:YAG laser in a two-beam interference setup, enabling the (a) structuring of the AL 5182 surface, (b) removal of the resin layer on top of carbon fibers, and (c) structuring of the carbon fibers. CFPC specimens of T700S carbon fiber, Prepreg - T83 epoxy, 5 ply thick, 0/90o plaques were used. The effect of laser fluence, scanning speed, and number of shots-per-spot was investigated on the removal rate of the resin without an excessive damage of the fibers. Optical micrographs, 3D imaging, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) imaging were used to study the effect of the laser processing on surface morphology.

Book excerpt: Carbon fiber reinforced composite materials have become commonplace in many industries including aerospace, automotive, and sporting goods. Previous research has determined a coupling relationship between the mechanical and electrical properties of these materials where the application of electrical current has been shown to improve their mechanical strengths. The next generations of these composites have started to be produced with the addition of nanocarbon buckypaper layers which provide even greater strength and electrical conductivity potentials. The focus of this current research was to characterize these new composites and compare their electro-mechanical coupling capabilities to those composites which do not contain any nanocarbons.

Book excerpt: The effect of fluid force on the natural frequencies and damping ratios of vibrating structures in contact with fluid is known as the Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) problem. It can be interpreted as an added mass to the vibrating structure in the analysis of the dynamic response. Because the density of water is much greater than air, the added mass effect becomes even more critical in understanding the dynamic response of composites in water surroundings. In this study, experimental testing was carried out to investigate FSI of composite laminates immersed in fluid and subjected to low-velocity impact. Square composite laminates of carbon fiber weave and vinyl ester resin of size 305 mm and 2.38 mm nominal thickness were subjected to low velocity impact loading, using a specially developed vertical drop-weight testing machine. The composite samples were fitted with gages to provide real-time information on strain levels generated during impact. Impact tests were performed on four side clamped laminates in air-backed, water-backed, and dry surroundings, and at various impact energies for investigation. The findings of this study will provide a better understanding for the use of composite materials in underwater structural applications where impact loading is expected.

This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The applications of composite materials are rapidly growing. In the aeronautical sector, composites account for up to 50% of the weight of a modern typical commercial aircraft. However, the amount of composites currently recycled is less than 5% of the total amount produced. With environmental concerns becoming an increasingly influential topic, recyclability of composite materials is a key issue. Furthermore, several related European laws have been passed to minimize the environmental impact of composite structures and to make rational use of landfills. In this chapter, the authors analyze recycling techniques for carbon fiber composites with thermoset polymer matrix. The objective is to reuse the fibers in new, lower cost composites with similar properties. Starting from a pyrolysis step, followed by oxidation, an evaluation of the different parameters of the recycling process has been performed. The characterization of the fibers includes tensile tests, scanning electron microscopy, and Raman spectroscopy. The recycled fibers presented a reduction of their initial tensile strength lower than 10%. Then, remanufacturing of laminates using the recycled fibers was achieved by resin film infusion, obtaining laminates with properties similar to the brand-new composites. These results have the potential to be exploited by the automotive, aeronautical, wind energy, construction, and other sectors.

Book excerpt: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon nanofibers (CNFs) have an exceptional combination of properties that make them ideal materials for use as reinforcing particles in advanced composites. This investigation was aimed at obtaining fundamental understanding of the processing and properties of carbon nanoparticle/fiber-reinforced polymer composites -defined as multiscalereinforced polymer composites (MRPCs)- manufactured through a practical and scalable process. Such process consists of two stages. The first stage involves the synthesis of multiscalereinforcement fabrics (MRFs) by electrophoretic deposition of carboxylic acid- or aminefunctionalized CNTs and CNFs onto the surface of carbon fiber layers in aqueous medium; while the second stage proceeds with the stacking of the MRFs and infusion of the resulting preforms with an epoxy-amine resin system to obtain the MRPC. MRPCs manufactured following the described approach were tested for mechanical and electrical properties. Mechanical test results showed an increase in interlaminar shear strength (ILSS), shear stiffness, and compressive strength of all panels manufactured. Panels containing amine-functionalized carbon nanoparticles had the highest increase in properties: 13% in ILSS, 2.5-4 fold in shear stiffness, and up to 15% in compressive strength. On the other hand, it was found that through-plane electrical conductivity of MRPCs increased by 100% when using unsized MRFs. Investigation into the enhancement mechanism of mechanical and electrical properties was also performed. Discussion of these mechanisms are presented with emphasis placed on the fiber/matrix interface and the load transfer mechanisms between matrix, carbon nanoparticles, and carbon fiber.

This book was released on 2011 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project is about mechanical characterization of high performance, structural composite materials. Within the context of this project, a commercial, now available epoxy resin reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNT’s) was compared with a high performance commercially available epoxy resin, also using unidirectional carbon fiber as reinforcement agent. CNT’s are a relatively new, interesting topic to study within the materials science, and because of the potential shown in previous studies, are of utter importance for critical structural applications, such as those found in the aerospace industry. During this project previous references were studied and used as comparison material to design the methodological framework followed in this work. To observe CNT’s benefits, samples tailored to American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standards were manufactured and tested in order to quantify the mechanical properties discussed in this. ASTM standards provide both the sample dimension requirements and the testing procedure to be followed in order to obtain reliable, organized, meaningful data from proposed tests. Tensile, shear and flexural strain-strength tests were performed in samples using both kinds of resins. Data collected from tests was organized, plotted and analyzed to understand mechanical behavior of the samples during the tests. Main engineering values such as ultimate tensile strength, engineering stress, young’s modulus, shear strength and so were gathered and documented in this project. CNT’s reinforced epoxy samples outperformed the common epoxy samples in general, showing a better behavior as seen in the deformation energy absorbed in the samples in each test. It is encouraged to keep the research on the CNT’s topic as a promising and relevant technology called to grow in use and performance in the future, as well as to expand and improve the difficulties and limitations found in this project. This project shows that even when using a low CNT’s content as reinforcement agent within the matrix, evaluated mechanical properties are effectively enhanced, making the CNT’s a good candidate for future composite material components where weight saving and better structural mechanical performance is needed.
