The meandering channels with rectangular and trapezoidal cross sections, of which the sinuosities were 1.093, 1.370 and 1.571, were constructed in a small experimental flume. A 2 component fibre optic laser Doppler anemometer was used in the velocity and turbulence measurements. Based on a great number of three-component velocity measurements in meandering channels for overbank flow, very detailed analyses of the mean flow and turbulent characteristics were undertaken. The velocity distributions were changed around the bankfull level through the interaction between the main channel flow and the flood plain flow in the crossover region. Strong secondary flow in the main channel and large Reynolds stresses at the interface were observed. These internal structures and the fluid mixing were attributed to the energy loss mechanism and hence to the conveyance capacity of the channel. Turbulence characteristics showed a strong 3 dimensional nature of the flow. Based on an analysis of three existing methods for stage-discharge prediction, a new method was developed by introducing several new parameters taking the effects of secondary flow and turbulence into account. The model gave quite good predictions for discharges. The applicability of the eddy viscosity concept to compound meandering flow was examined. The variation of the non-dimensional eddy viscosity indicated that a value of (......... ) could be applicable to meandering channel flow in both inbank and overbank conditions.

The book is limited to explaining and employing the finite difference method. It furnishes a large number of source codes which permit to play with the Navier-Stokes equations and to understand the complex physics related to fluid mechanics. Numerical simulations are useful tools to understand the complexity of the flows, which often is difficult to derive from laboratory experiments. This book, then, can be very useful to scholars doing laboratory experiments, since they often do not have extra time to study the large variety of numerical methods; furthermore they cannot spend more time in transferring one of the methods into a computer language. By means of numerical simulations, for example, insights into the vorticity field can be obtained which are difficult to obtain by measurements. This book can be used by graduate as well as undergraduate students while reading books on theoretical fluid mechanics; it teaches how to simulate the dynamics of flow fields on personal computers. This will provide a better way of understanding the theory. Two chapters on Large Eddy Simulations have been included, since this is a methodology that in the near future will allow more universal turbulence models for practical applications. The direct simulation of the Navier-Stokes equations (DNS) is simple by finite-differences, that are satisfactory to reproduce the dynamics of turbulent flows. A large part of the book is devoted to the study of homogeneous and wall turbulent flows. In the second chapter the elementary concept of finite difference is given to solve parabolic and elliptical partial differential equations. In successive chapters the 1D, 2D, and 3D Navier-Stokes equations are solved in Cartesian and cylindrical coordinates. Finally, Large Eddy Simulations are performed to check the importance of the subgrid scale models. Results for turbulent and laminar flows are discussed, with particular emphasis on vortex dynamics. This volume will be of interest to graduate students and researchers wanting to compare experiments and numerical simulations, and to workers in the mechanical and aeronautic industries.

Book excerpt: The aim of this Advanced Research Workshop was to bring together Physicists, Applied Mathematicians and Fluid Dynamicists, including very specially experimentalists, to review the available knowledge on the global structural aspects of turbulent flows, with an especial emphasis on open systems, and to try to reach a consensus on their possible relationship to recent advances in the understanding of the behaviour of low dimensional dynamical systems and amplitude equations. A lot has been learned during recent years on the non-equilibrium behaviour of low dimen sional dynamical systems, including some fluid flows (Rayleigh-Benard, Taylor-Couette, etc. ). These are mostly closed flows and many of the global structural features of the low dimensional systems have been observed in them, including chaotic behaviour, period doubling, intermit tency, etc. . It has also been shown that some of these flows are intrinsically low dimensional, which accounts for much of the observed similarities. Open flows seem to be different, and experimental observations point to an intrinsic high dimensionality. However, some of the tran sitional features of the low dimensional systems have been observed in them, specially in the intermittent behaviour of subcritical flows (pipes, channels, boundary layers with suction, etc. ), and in the large scale geometry of coherent structures of free shear flows (mixing layers, jets and wakes).
