Book Synopsis Karst Aquifers - Characterization and Engineering by : Zoran Stevanović
Download or read book Karst Aquifers - Characterization and Engineering written by Zoran Stevanović and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-02-25 with total page 698 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This practical training guidebook makes an important contribution to karst hydrogeology. It presents supporting material for academic courses worldwide that include this and similar topics. It is an excellent sourcebook for students and other attendees of the International Karst School: Characterization and Engineering of Karst Aquifers, which opened in Trebinje, Bosnia & Herzegovina in 2014 and which will be organized every year in early summer. As opposed to more theoretical works, this is a catalog of possible engineering interventions in karst and their implications. Although the majority of readers will be professionals with geology/hydrogeology backgrounds, the language is not purely technical making it accessible to a wider audience. This means that the methodology, case studies and experiences presented will also benefit water managers working in karst environments.

Book Synopsis Caves and Karst of the Greenbrier Valley in West Virginia by : William B. White
Download or read book Caves and Karst of the Greenbrier Valley in West Virginia written by William B. White and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-11-20 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this book is on the more than 2000 caves of the Greenbrier Valley of West Virginia of which the 14 with lengths greater than 10 km have an aggregate length of 639 km. The major caves form the core part of sub-basins which drain to big springs and ultimately to the Greenbrier River. Individual chapters of this book describe each of the major caves and its associated drainage basin. The caves are formed in the Mississippian Greenbrier Limestone in a setting of undulating gentle folds. Fractures, lineaments and confining layers within the limestone are the main controlling factors. The caves underlie an extensive sinkhole plain which may relate to a major erosion surface. The caves are habitat for both aquatic and terrestrial organisms which are cataloged and described as are the paleontological remains found in some of the caves. The sinkhole plain of the Greenbrier karst and the underlying complex of cave systems are the end result of at least a ten million year history of landscape evolution which can be traced through the evolving sequence of cave passages and which is described in this book.

Book Synopsis Enhanced Characterization and Representation of Flow Through Karst Aquifers by : Scott L. Painter
Download or read book Enhanced Characterization and Representation of Flow Through Karst Aquifers written by Scott L. Painter and published by American Water Works Association. This book was released on 2006 with total page 105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research report summaries and details the first year of work on a multi-year karst modeling project organized to develop enhanced groundwater modeling capabilities that can be used to effectively manage karst aquifers. Discussed are the three key considerations for modeling karst systems were identified: representation of conduits in flow models, representation of flow dynamics in conduits, and representation of partially filled conduits and the numerical experiments used to identify the limitations and advantages of the three general representations of conduits within groundwater models. A new dual-conductivity MODFLOW-2000 package (DCM) was developed for testing the dual-conductivity approach. A turbulence model was added, the software was validated using simple benchmark problems, and code documentation was completed. Simultaneous demonstrations showed that the modeling tool can be successfully applied in complex applications.
Book Synopsis Groundwater Hydrology of Springs by : Neven Kresic
Download or read book Groundwater Hydrology of Springs written by Neven Kresic and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2009-08-29 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Groundwater Hydrology of Water Resource Series - Water is an essential environmental resource and one that needs to be properly managed. As the world places more emphasis on sustainable water supplies, the demand for expertise in hydrology and water resources continues to increase. This series is intended for professional engineers, who seek a firm foundation in hydrology and an ability to apply this knowledge to solve problems in water resource management. Future books in the series are: Groudwater Hydrology of Springs (2009), Groudwater Hydrology of River Basins (2009), Groudwater Hydrology of Aquifers (2010), and Groudwater Hydrology of Wetlands (2010). First utilized as a primary source of drinking water in the ancient world, springs continue to supply many of the world's cities with water. In recent years their long-term sustainability is under pressure due to an increased demand from groundwater users. Edited by two world-renowned hydrologists, Groundwater Hydrology of Springs: Theory, Management, and Sustainability will provide civil and environmental engineers with a comprehensive reference for managing and sustaining the water quality of Springs. With contributions from experts from around the world, this book cover many of the world's largest springs, providing a unique global perspective on how engineers around the world are utilizing engineering principles for coping with problems such as: mismanagement, overexploitation and their impacts both water quantity and quality. The book will be divided into two parts: part one will explain the theory and principles of hydrology as they apply to Springs while part two will provide a rare look into the engineering practices used to manage some of the most important Springs from around the world. Description of the spring and the aquifer feeding it Latest groundwater and contaminant transport models Description of sources of aquifer use Understanding of contamination and/or possible contamination A plan for management and sustainability

Book Synopsis Methods in Karst Hydrogeology by : Nico Goldscheider
Download or read book Methods in Karst Hydrogeology written by Nico Goldscheider and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2007-09-12 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of investigating karstified aquifers lies in their significance as a major source of drinking water. This book describes methods that are basic to all hydrogeological studies, such as hydraulic investigations, hydrochemistry, geophysics, isotope chemistry and modelling, but with the emphasis placed on their application to karst systems. Other techniques are specific to the karst environment, such as the speleological exploration of aquifers and water tracing. The various chapters of this book are written by experts in different methods. Most of the chapters are multi-authored, and the authors include hydrogeologists who are experienced in evaluating a variety of karst environments and who together, provide a comprehensive review of karst methods.
Book Synopsis Research on Risk Evaluation Methods of Groundwater Bursting from Aquifers Underlying Coal Seams and Applications to Coalfields of North China by : Yifan Zeng
Download or read book Research on Risk Evaluation Methods of Groundwater Bursting from Aquifers Underlying Coal Seams and Applications to Coalfields of North China written by Yifan Zeng and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-21 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an information fusion model with information fusion theory, geographic information system technology and modern mathematical methods to evaluate the risks of groundwater inrushes from aquifers underlying coal seams. In this new model, the water inrush vulnerable index was calculated with variable weights theory. It overcomes the defect of the traditional vulnerability index method that assumes constant weights for the factors controlling the water inrush. Mine water inrush events often occur during coal mine construction and production; they account for a large proportion of the nation’s coal mine disasters and accidents in China. Between 2005 and 2014, 513 water inrush incidents have occurred with a total loss of 2,753 lives. As mining depths and mining intensity continue to increase, the hydrogeological conditions encountered are becoming more complex. The innovative model presented here was applied to two coal mines in China with proved better results than the traditional vulnerability index method.
