Book excerpt: We examine how financial statement informativeness, analyst following, and news, relate to the information asymmetry between insiders and outsiders. Corporations' timely disclosures of value relevant information and information collection by outsiders reduce information asymmetry, limiting insiders' ability to trade profitably on private information. We use the profitability and intensity of insider trades to proxy for information asymmetry. We find that increased analyst following is associated with reduced profitability of insider trades and reduced insider purchases. Financial statement informativeness is negatively associated with the frequency of insider purchases. However, company news, good or bad, is positively associated with insider purchase frequency.

Book excerpt: Présentation de l'éditeur : "In an examination that is at once critical, comparative and interdisciplinary, the book discusses the stated objectives of the EU issuer-disclosure regime - principally about retail investor protection - and then goes on to identify objectives that can actually be met in practice, i.e. market efficiency and corporate governance. The author concludes by drawing concrete policy and regulatory implications, along the way covering such aspects and ramifications of the regime. In its defence of the power of market forces as regulatory means, and its clear argument that market finance should be seen at a minimum as a useful complement to bank credit and other financing sources, this important book can claim a privileged space in the debate over the role of disclosure requirements in securities regulation."

Book excerpt: This study examines the relation between the ability of insider trades to predict future returns and the availability of firm information. It investigates the marginal effect of three information sources: financial statements, analyst following, and firm information provided by voluntary disclosures or general news coverage. Timely disclosure of value relevant information reduces insiders' ability to trade profitably on private information. Investors acquire timely information from a variety of sources, and information provided by one source can affect the production of information by other sources. Thus, we examine these major sources simultaneously to understand the marginal effects of each. We find that the ability of insider trades to predict future returns diminishes in situations of increased analyst following and financial statement informativeness. However, we are unable to find a significant relation between the availability of company news and the predictive ability of insider trades.

This book was released on 2023-11-03 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China’s national carbon market, the world’s largest emissions trading scheme (ETS), kicked off its first online trade recently. This can be called a milestone for the country towards the nation’s goals of having CO2 emissions peak before 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060. China’s national ETS initially covers the power sector, before being expanded to a much broader set of energy-intensive industries. On one hand, the electricity sector, the largest carbon-emitting industry, is responsible for about 40% of China’s emissions, and it has great significance to response to global climate change. On the other hand, the effectiveness of China’s ETS will rest on how well it is coordinated with power market regulations and policies. In this regard, the deepening of reform, as well as the advanced technology and its applications in the electricity market will add new challenges and opportunities to electricity trade, which, in turn, influences national ETS. Therefore, this brings urgency to accurately capture the dynamic interactions between national ETS and electricity market to transform carbon trading into a practical and effective way to decarbonize the power sector.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of "International Finance Review" focuses on the Asia-Pacific financial markets. A total of 22 original papers, not published elsewhere, have been selected from a competitive field. These papers utilize a variety of methods, including theoretical, empirical and qualitative to highlight a range of issues across the region. Several papers offer combinations of these different categories and among the empirical papers, there are a wide variety of datasets analyzed. While China does play a significant part in the analysis of five of the papers in this volume (this is to be expected given its importance in the region), a host of other countries are also considered. This ensures the volume is truly international in its scope. These papers each serve to contribute to the knowledge on a particular issue related to the financial markets within this region and for this volume, three main issues have been identified: integration, innovation and challenges. Articles are contributed by experts in their fields. It is truly international in scope.
