Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first major revision of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory - a widely-used clinical personality instrument - was published in 1989. The study described in this book (based on the test results of over 500 patients) addresses the comparability of the new MMPI-2 to the earlier model among chronic pain patients, and provides preliminary research data on the performance of the revised test among the large chronic pain population. It concludes with suggestions for interpretative strategies in assessing chronic pain patients with the MMPI-2, and with recommendations for future research directions.

Book excerpt: Four years after the introduction of the revised Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, the MMPI-2 is regarded throughout the world as a unique, invaluable instrument. Completely revised and updated, MMPI-2: Assessing Personality and Psychopathology, Second Edition encompasses all that has been learned about the original and revised tests. An interpretive strategy is presented and illustrated with several cases. A new section has been added concerning how feedback on MMPI-2 results should be presented to clients. The chapter on supplementary scales includes information about two new alcohol abuse scales and a marital distress scale. The book critically analyzes the use of the MMPI-2 with special groups, such as older adults, ethnic minorities, medical patients, correctional subjects, and subjects in nonclinical settings. An expanded chapter addresses the psychometric characteristics of the original MMPI and of the MMPI-2 and includes information concerning comparability of the two tests. Computerized use of the MMPI-2 is considered and a computerized interpretation is compared with a clinician-generated interpretation. The development of the MMPI-A, the adolescent version of the test, is presented along with a detailed approach to interpreting the results of this new test. This book is essential to students in personality assessment courses learning about the MMPI-2 and MMPI-A as well as to professionals who use these two tests in research and clinical work.

This long-awaited second edition constitutes the single most comprehensive and up-to-date textbook of MMPI-2 interpretation. Completely rewritten to address the changes to the original instrument that resulted in the MMPI-2 in l989, it describes in detail all the MMPI-2 scales--clinical, supplementary, and content--and offers empirically-grounded and clinically-tested recommendations for their use. The last decade has seen an explosion of research, as well as a steady accumulation of experiential wisdom; bridging the gap between behavioral science and practice, the authors review all the major findings and their implications and draw on rich clinical material to illuminate the issues. This second edition: * helps users with forensic interests including attorneys needing a reference for expert review; * gives step-by-step advice on interpreting profiles; * includes treatment recommendations in the explanation of every code pattern; * provides extensive guidance on report-writing for new users; * compares the most current MMPI-2 computer reports; * features numerous tables, figures, and appendices for all the MMPI-2 scales including the newer validity measures; and * incorporates 570 references (235 completely new).

Book excerpt: Research on the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) and its revised version (MMPI-2) has generated a specific correlate literature associated with scale scores for college students and college counseling clients. This study aimed to establish correlates of the latest version of the MMPI, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF) using a selfreport checklist of psychological/ personal, interpersonal, health, and academic problems. This study utilized a college counseling center sample (N=129) that consisted of clients who had completed both the MMPI-2 and the Problem Checklist. The MMPI-2-RF scores were derived from MMPI-2 item responses. Biserial correlations were computed to establish correlates of MMPI-2-RF Scale scores using checklist items. A large number of significant and conceptually appropriate correlates were generated for the MMPI-2-RF scales. Upon examination, the correlates found in this study provided an expansion for interpretation of MMPI-2-RF scales for college counseling students. This study found broad measures of emotional distress produced relatively larger numbers of correlates with large effect sizes, Overall, the nature and direction of the significant correlates were consistent with the measured constructs. Applications, contributions, and future research directions are discussed.

Book excerpt: "The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory--2--Restructured Form (MMPI--2--RF) represents a fundamental change in how people conceptualize and assess personality and psychopathology. The old paradigm, on which the original MMPI was based, consists of a set of discrete categorical diagnoses that a client or patient either has or does not have. The new paradigm conceptualizes psychopathology as a hierarchical structure of dimensional constructs ranging from relatively broad to relatively narrow in scope. In the context of the new paradigm, the MMPI--2--RF provides accurate measurement of 40 dimensional constructs related to personality and psychopathology. This book describes a two-pass approach to interpreting the MMPI--2--RF. The first pass is a quick overview, taking four or five minutes usually, and the second pass is the detailed interpretation step, using tools and guidelines presented in this book. The book provides a brief overview of the MMPI--2--RF, describing the key issues in the development of the original MMPI and the transitions to the MMPI--2. It covers standard practices with regard to administering and scoring the MMPI--2--RF. After an overview on actual scale interpretation with the protocol validity scales, the book covers all 42 of the Substantive Scales of the MMPI--2--RF. A formal presentation of the interpretive framework, including the two-pass approach to the test results, is then presented. Finally, the book presents a case example that provides a demonstration of the interpretive approach."--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2018 APA, all rights reserved).
