Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pencil Sketches: Or, Outlines of Character and Manners As is the case in most American villages, the female population of T far outnumbered the male; and the matrimon' market being extremely deficient in the article of young men, the ladies, in default of other occupation, were much addicted to reforming the world and improving the condition of the universe. They not only kept a close watch over the little community immediately around them, but they had lately taken the Pelew Islands under their protection, and had formed a society for the purpose of supplying the wants (both mental and physical) of these amiable savages - the history of Prince Lee Boo having convinced them that his countrymen were a people whose capacities were great, and whose necessities were numerous. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Seymour and Nineteenth-Century Print Culture is the first book-length study of the original illustrator of Dickens’s Pickwick Papers. Discussion of the range and importance of Seymour’s work as a jobbing illustrator in the 1820s and 1830s is at the centre of the book. A bibliographical study of his prolific output of illustrations in many different print genres is combined with a wide-ranging account of his major publications. Seymour’s extended work for The Comic Magazine, New Readings of Old Authors and Humorous Sketches, all described in detail, are of particular importance in locating the dialogue between image and text at the moment when the Victorian illustrated novel was coming into being.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of English Character, Vol. 1 of 2 A man of peculiar habits who has vainly tried to drill his whims and oddities to the regimental discipline of London life, and fire his Opinions in platoons with the commonplace people of his parish, when he finds himself out of bounds of conventional tyranny, is apt to run into extremes. The English, consequently, pass for cracked on the continent of Europe, just as the Russians pass for millionnaires; merely because the wealthy of Russia and eccentric of Great Britain are forced to travel in search of enjoyment. Perhaps econo my was a still more striking trait of his char acter than shrewd discrimination.
