Book Synopsis The Causal Power of Social Structures by : Dave Elder-Vass
Download or read book The Causal Power of Social Structures written by Dave Elder-Vass and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-06-17 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of structure and agency has been the subject of intense debate in the social sciences for over 100 years. This book offers a solution. Using a critical realist version of the theory of emergence, Dave Elder-Vass argues that, instead of ascribing causal significance to an abstract notion of social structure or a monolithic concept of society, we must recognise that it is specific groups of people that have social structural power. Some of these groups are entities with emergent causal powers, distinct from those of human individuals. Yet these powers also depend on the contributions of human individuals, and this book examines the mechanisms through which interactions between human individuals generate the causal powers of some types of social structures. The Causal Power of Social Structures makes particularly important contributions to the theory of human agency and to our understanding of normative institutions.
Book Synopsis National Character by : Alex Inkeles
Download or read book National Character written by Alex Inkeles and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seen in modern perspective, the concept of national character poses fundamental problems for social science theory and research: To what extent do conditions of life in a particular society give rise to certain patterns in the personalities of its members? What are the consequences? Alex Inkeles surveys various definitions of national character, tracing developments through the twentieth century. His approach is to examine the regularity of specific personality patterns among individuals in a society. He argues that modal personality may be extremely important in determining which new cultural elements are accepted and which institutional forms persist in a society. Reviewing previous studies, Inkeles canvasses the attitudes and psychological states of different nations in an effort to discover a set of values in the United States. He concludes that, despite recent advances in the field, there is much to be done before we can have a clear picture of the degree of differentiation in the personality structure of modern nations. Until now, there were few formal definitions and discussions on national character and the limits of this field of study. This book will be of great interest to psychologists, sociologists, philosophers, and political theorists.

Book Synopsis The Sociology of Deviance by : Colin Sumner
Download or read book The Sociology of Deviance written by Colin Sumner and published by Taylor & Francis Group. This book was released on 1994 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colin Summer charts the rise and fall of a field of enquiry. He argues that the lack of recent "warfare over the terrain over the sociology of deviance is actually due to the fact that the combatants over the years, in their enthusiasm for the fight, have completely demolished the terrain...the terrain now resembles the Somme in 1918. It is barran, fruitless, full of empty trenches and craters, littered with unexploded mines and eerily silent. No one fights for hegemony over a dangerous graveyard. it is now time to drop arms and show respect for the dead". The first part of this extended obituary documents the formation of the field of sociology of deviance from its conception in the womb of Durkheim's social theory to its coming of age in late 1930s sociology. The second part examines the heyday of the field as a popular science and as a critique of social control in the 1960s. The final part analyzes its death at the hands of the post-1968 critics. Throughout, Colin Summer explores the theoretical matrix that held the sociology of deviance together and sets it in the context of culture, politics and social change.

Book excerpt: A watershed event in the field of sociology, this text introduced “a major breakthrough in the sociology of knowledge and sociological theory generally” (George Simpson, American Sociological Review). In this seminal book, Peter L. Berger and Thomas Luckmann examine how knowledge forms and how it is preserved and altered within a society. Unlike earlier theorists and philosophers, Berger and Luckmann go beyond intellectual history and focus on commonsense, everyday knowledge—the proverbs, morals, values, and beliefs shared among ordinary people. When first published in 1966, this systematic, theoretical treatise introduced the term social construction, effectively creating a new thought and transforming Western philosophy.

Book Synopsis The Constitution of Society by : Anthony Giddens
Download or read book The Constitution of Society written by Anthony Giddens and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2013-06-28 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anthony Giddens has been in the forefront of developments in social theory for the past decade. In The Constitution of Society he outlines the distinctive position he has evolved during that period and offers a full statement of a major new perspective in social thought, a synthesis and elaboration of ideas touched on in previous works but described here for the first time in an integrated and comprehensive form. A particular feature is Giddens's concern to connect abstract problems of theory to an interpretation of the nature of empirical method in the social sciences. In presenting his own ideas, Giddens mounts a critical attack on some of the more orthodox sociological views. The Constitution of Society is an invaluable reference book for all those concerned with the basic issues in contemporary social theory.
Book Synopsis Heroes, Villains, and Fools by : Orrin E. Klapp
Download or read book Heroes, Villains, and Fools written by Orrin E. Klapp and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-08 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents three major social types in American society-heroes, villains, and fools-as models for American behaviour. Approaching these models primarily through language, Orrin E. Klapp explores what they may suggest about Americans as a people. Rather than study people, the author describes abstract types named and embedded in popular language. These social types are important symbols; and a way to attack a symbol is by identifying its meaning in various contexts. He further argues that the language surrounding heroes, villains, and fools reveals a social structure. We may not escape being ascribed a type, but we do have a choice of type. Known more commonly as "finding oneself," we can manipulate cues-with dress, facial expressions, style of life, or conspicuous public roles-to build an identity. This classic study has serious contemporary implications. For a public figure, an inevitable result of the typing process is the development of at least two selves, the public and the private. When the book originally appeared in 1962, the struggle to balance two images generally only plagued celebrities and politicians. Today, social media offers everyone the opportunity to develop an online persona. This volume will be of interest to sociologists as well as anyone who has a Facebook account.
