Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chapters on Jewish Literature These twenty-five short chapters on Jewish Literature open with the fall of Jerusalem in the year 70 of the current era, and end with the death of Moses Mendels sohn in I 786. Thus the period covered extends over more than seventeen cen turies. Yet, long as this period is, it is too brief. To do justice to the literature of Judaism even in outline, it is clearly neces sary to include the Bible, the Apocrypha, and the writings of Alexandrian Jews, such as Philo. Only by such an inclusion can the genius of the Hebrew people be traced from its early manifestations through its inspired prime to its brilliant after-glow in the centuries with which this little vol ume deals. Book excerpt: NEW PRINT WITH PROFESSIONAL TYPE-SET IN CONTRAST TO SCANNED PRINTS OFFERED BY OTHERS Chapters On Jewish Literature This book is a result of an effort made by us towards making a contribution to the preservation and repair of original classic literature. In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jew in English Fiction During the six years which have elapsed since the last edition of this book appeared a great number of novels and dramas containing Jews as principal or minor characters have been published. Most of these have no value as literature. They are ephemeral, and with few exceptions aroused scarcely more than passing interest. Besides the fiction of this character, which has been written in English, many translations from the Yid dish have been made into English. These Yiddish tales belong to the category of the ghetto novel, which forms the subject of the closing chapter of this book. The principles there discussed are largely applicable to these stories and, mutatis mutandis, hold good of them as they do of the books treated in that chapter. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Jewish Literature and Other Essays The following essays were delivered during the last ten years, in the form of addresses, before the largest associations in the great cities of Germany. Each one is a dear and precious possession to me. As I once more pass them in review, reminiscences fill my mind Of solemn occasions and impressive scenes, of excellent men and charming women. I feel as though I were sending the best beloved child ren of my fancy out into the world, and sadness seizes me when I realize that they no longer belong to me alone - that they have become the property Of strangers. The living word falling upon the ear of the listener is one thing; quite another the word staring from the cold, printed page. Will my thoughts be accorded the same friendly welcome that greeted them when first they were uttered? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Karaite Jews The book now presented to English readers is the first volume in our language that has been entirely devoted to the history of Karaite Jews. Writers on Jewish history have usually given a chapter, an appendix, or a few common-place unstudied sentences to this branch of their subject. The subject in itself was deemed interesting, but so scant and imperfect were the materials that it was impossible to treat it satisfactorily. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jews of South Carolina, From the Earliest Times to the Present Day The author would only add that the following chapters are the result of several years of steady work done in the intervals of a busy life. He has striven to make the story as complete and as accurate as possible. Other facts may yet come to light, but all the sources at present available have been laid under contribution. Many interesting data have doubtless been omitted, but the author only claims to tell the story in as far as it is revealed in the records. When the reader considers the immensity of the task here undertaken, and the fact that this history is now written for the first time, the author feels that he may reasonably seek indulgence for any small shortcomings of which he may unconsciously be guilty. A subject so vast and complicated must of necessity be difficult to pre sent in so brief a compass.
