Book excerpt: A collection of papers from the Fitch and Chapman families of the Norwich, Connecticut, area. The Fitch papers include a promissory note to the South Ecclesiastical Society, several pieces regarding an agreement for Fitch and Bissell to build the National Road in Pennsylvania, and legal documents regarding Azel Hyde, Benjamin Fitch, and Ebenezer Fitch's debts. Due to lack of payment the men served time in New Gate Prison. Freeman Chapman's papers relate to his work as a leather merchant and wool buyer. There are numerous bills and receipts for both F.C. Chapman and his son, Van Buren. Additionally, the collection contains letters and legal documents concerning land F.C. Chapman was trying to sell in Michigan. A Barber family history, William Barber's papers concerning land at Oak Grove Cemetery in Rhode Island, and a piece of correspondence sent to H.C. Lathrop are included but do not appear to have any direct relationship to the collection.
