Book excerpt: This book covers the foundations of classical thermodynamics, with emphasis on the use of differential forms of classical and quantum statistical mechanics, and also on the foundational aspects. In both contexts, a number of applications are considered in detail, such as the general theory of response, correlations and fluctuations, and classical and quantum spin systems. In the quantum case, a self-contained introduction to path integral methods is given. In addition, the book discusses phase transitions and critical phenomena, with applications to the Landau theory and to the Ginzburg-Landau theory of superconductivity, and also to the phenomenon of Bose condensation and of superfluidity. Finally, there is a careful discussion on the use of the renormalization group in the study of critical phenomena.

Book excerpt: Approach your problems from the right end It isn't that they can't see the solution. and begin with the answers. Then one day, It is that they can't see the problem. perhaps you will find the final question. G. K. Chesterton. The Scandal of Father 'The Hermit Clad in Crane Feathers' Brown 'The point of a Pin'. in R. van Gulik's The Chinese Maze Murders. Growing specialization and diversification have brought a host of monographs and textbooks on increasingly specialized topics. However, the "tree" of knowledge of mathematics and related fields does not grow only by putting forth new branches. It also happens, quite often in fact, that branches which were thouglit to be completely disparate are suddenly seen to be related. Further, the kind and level of sophistication of mathematics applied in various sci ences has changed drastically in recent years: measure theory is used (non-trivially) in re gional and theoretical economics; algebraic geometry interacts with physics; the Minkowsky lemma, coding theory and the structure of water meet one another in packing and covering theory; quantum fields, crystal defects and mathematical programming profit from homo topy theory; Lie algebras are relevant to filtering; and prediction and electrical engineering can use Stein spaces.

Book excerpt: This volume was produced in conjunction with the Thematic Program in o-Minimal Structures and Real Analytic Geometry, held from January to June of 2009 at the Fields Institute. Five of the six contributions consist of notes from graduate courses associated with the program: Felipe Cano on a new proof of resolution of singularities for planar analytic vector fields; Chris Miller on o-minimality and Hardy fields; Jean-Philippe Rolin on the construction of o-minimal structures from quasianalytic classes; Fernando Sanz on non-oscillatory trajectories of vector fields; and Patrick Speissegger on pfaffian sets. The sixth contribution, by Antongiulio Fornasiero and Tamara Servi, is an adaptation to the nonstandard setting of A.J. Wilkie's construction of o-minimal structures from infinitely differentiable functions. Most of this material is either unavailable elsewhere or spread across many different sources such as research papers, conference proceedings and PhD theses. This book will be a useful tool for graduate students or researchers from related fields who want to learn about expansions of o-minimal structures by solutions, or images thereof, of definable systems of differential equations.

Lie's motivation when he created what is now known as Lie groups and Lie algebras; nevertheless, although Lie group and algebra theory flourished and was applied to a number of dift"erent physical situations -up to the point that a lot, if not most, of current fun damental elementary particles physics is actually (physical interpretation of) group theory -the application of symmetry methods to dift"erential equations remained a sleeping beauty for many, many years. The main reason for this lies probably in a fact that is quite clear to any beginner in the field. Namely, the formidable comple:rity ofthe (algebraic, not numerical!) computations involved in Lie method. I think this does not account completely for this oblivion: in other fields of Physics very hard analytical computations have been worked through; anyway, one easily understands that systems of dOlens of coupled PDEs do not seem very attractive, nor a very practical computational tool.

Book excerpt: This book presents the conceptional line which goes from the observation of physical systems to their modeling and analysis by ordinary differential nonlinear stochastic equations.First, the problems of the mathematical modeling of physical systems are developed. These mathematical models are then classified in terms of ordinary differential stochastic equations from which both qualitative and quantitative results are developed. Each one of the various subjects are methods dealt with ends with an application in mathematical physics or in nonlinear mechanics.

Book excerpt: This proceedings book brings selected works from two conferences, the 2nd Brazil-Mexico Meeting on Singularity and the 3rd Northeastern Brazilian Meeting on Singularities, that were hold in Salvador, in July 2015. All contributions were carefully peer-reviewed and revised, and cover topics like Equisingularity, Topology and Geometry of Singularities, Topological Classification of Singularities of Mappings, and more. They were written by mathematicians from several countries, including Brazil, Spain, Mexico, Japan and the USA, on relevant topics on Theory of Singularity, such as studies on deformations, Milnor fibration, foliations, Catastrophe theory, and myriad applications. Open problems are also introduced, making this volume a must-read both for graduate students and active researchers in this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is adapted and revised from the author's seminal PhD thesis, in which two forms of asymptotically universal structure were presented and explained for area-preserving maps. Area-preserving maps are the discrete-time analogue of two degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian systems. How they work and much of their dynamics are described in this book. The asymptotically universal structure is found on small scales in phase-space and long time-scales. The key to understanding it is renormalisation, that is, looking at a system on successively smaller phase-space and longer time scales. Having presented this idea, the author briefly surveys the use of the idea of renormalisation in physics. The renormalisation picture is then presented as the key to understanding the transition from regular to chaotic motion in area-preserving maps. Although written ten years ago, the subject matter continues to interest many today. This updated version will be useful to both researchers and students.

Book excerpt: This first of two bound volumes present the proceedings of the conference, Complex Analysis, Dynamical Systems, Summability of Divergent Series and Galois Theories, held in Toulouse on the occasion of J.-P. Ramis' sixtieth birthday. The first volume opens with two articles composed of recollections and three articles on J.-P. Ramis' works on complex analysis and ODE theory, both linear and non-linear. This introduction is followed by papers concerned with Galois theories, arithmetic or integrability: analogies between differential and arithmetical theories, $q$-difference equations, classical or $p$-adic, the Riemann-Hilbert problem and renormalization, $b$-functions, descent problems, Krichever modules, the set of integrability, Drach theory, and the VI${}^{{th}}$ Painleve equation. The second volume contains papers dealing with analytical or geometrical aspects: Lyapunov stability, asymptotic and dynamical analysis for pencils of trajectories, monodromy in moduli spaces, WKB analysis and Stokes geometry, first and second Painleve equations, normal forms for saddle-node type singularities, and invariant tori for PDEs. The volumes are suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in differential equations, number theory, geometry, and topology.
